Baptiste - not coming back next season?

Alternatively, one of the clues might be in a word you've capitalised. As someone that will be 23 this year, frankly this is starting to be a stretch. The "pathway" should be about players improving year on year up the grades, getting to the first team, and proving yourself there. I'm afraid Kennedy has been along that pathway, during which despite the enthusiasm and potential his body can't take it. Showed he was good at League 1 level, but struggled to finish 90 mins and couldn't do two games in a week without being injured afterwards. He was then given an opportunity to prove his fitness at League 2 Cambridge, as I hoped he would because funnily enough I'd have liked him to be a success – they couldn't get rid of him fast enough.

He made his debut for us in the Championship – that really does hit home how long he has been a pro, and how the fact that we're even debating this is mind boggling. I don't doubt his effort to make it in the game, but at a time when we need reliable players in the squad for next season any contract offer to him would be utter madness. If for some reason Adkins signs a player that in five years as a pro footballer has started about 15 games of league footballer, I'll be first to label him a madman. We've got bugger all chance of getting Baptiste next season, but that's still a better chance than Kennedy getting any sort of deal from us.

The fact that you criticise Edgar for being away on international duty is comical. Is it three or four games he was missing for? That's unfortunately more than Kennedy averages per year sadly. If we're going to experiment with any of the young players in the middle of defence before the season finishes, there are several at U21 level we should be thinking about.

I have no problem with Edgar wishing to represent his country, all players should wish to do so. The problem I have is that McGahey came into the team and did well, however upon Edgar returning, McGahey was immediately dropped. This appears to me unfair on McGahey, who is one of our own young players, while Edgar is a loan player. If you go away to represent your country and others come in an do well, then its a risk you take of then being left out when you return. His trips away must be a consideration, when making a judgement on if we should sign him next season. It would seem an ideal opportunity now that the play offs have gone, to give McGahey a run in the team, instead of the loan players.

I don't argue that McGahey's recent cameos have been encouraging – the argument to play him is a much more reasonable one. My objection was where you seemed to suggest that Kennedy wasn't being given a chance because Adkins had either fallen out with him or because Kennedy's face doesn't fit (rather then the knee-shaped issue staring everyone in the face). I'm not convinced McGahey is worth retaining either – we have to bear in mind that every out-of-contract player we decide 'oh well, let's just given him another year' likely means one less player signed. He's borderline for me.
