Banning away fans

If he wants a genuine and honest discussion about this, we can debate the levels of policing being commensurate with the fixtures. Seems to be complete overkill in terms of numbers attending the vast majority of games.

Yes but when ten thousand OCS gather at Hillsborough Corner........

You just know the senior officer who made the claim is either a liar or, well, let's leave it there.

Usual rhetoric from the out of touch Chief Constable prior to a season starting. In short what he really means is we are going to hide behind the fact that we are incompetent at policing football matches in South Yorkshire, unlike the vast majority of police forces in the UK and blame the sub human species commonly known as South Yorkshire football fans.

Expect more and more disruption to games as he pursues his crusade of hassling local landlords, closing down of pubs around the ground. Kick offs at 11.a.m. 3 p.m. kick offs becoming a luxury rather than the norm.

Wouldn't be suprised if he tries to get the away ticket allocation reduced for both steel city derbies. Even going as far as insisting both sets of fans should be bussed into the game. This isn't about all matches its about the major fck up at the Duffy bouncing day massacre. They received a lot of criticism for it and he's looking for damage limitation. Blades aren't going to use the trams now so how is he going to control 2.5k fans strolling up to the Sty next season.

He's aiming to suck the enjoyment out of going to a game by implementing draconian measures. The local authorities should call into question his competence to do the job if all he can do is issue veiled threats.

Day of the weeds match last season they had foot patrols of paramilitary style police up and down eccy Road for no reason. As well as van loads of Durham constabulary raking in overtime.

Meanwhile a large group of scummy Leeds knob heads drank neat vodka, shouted abuse and set off a flare outside the shop on corner of BL and main stand. No coppers in sight.

The management in SYP is clueless

Spot on. A van full of Durham coppers pulled up outside the Lord Nelson looked inside and one said it looks ok some young kids in there. We asked if they'd been briefed on local pubs. They hadn't. They said they'd been told Leeds fans were nearby but couldn't find them. A Blade explained a large mob of them were walking down Arundel Gate unescorted. We had to give them directions to drive onto the road that ran parrallel to the Lord Nelson :D. Also away at the Sty Durham police, who were ok, were asking where the ground was.

Its not the local copper on the ground its the clowns who are in charge of them that cause the problems. Its not about money its about better planning and organisation. Other forces manage games adequately SYP are unable to do this.

A post about the police. This is clearly going to get a bad reaction.

Funny though because everyone's fine saying "Fuck the police" but end up needing their help when in danger

……. at which point they are comfortably sitting behind a mobile speed trap, catching somebody doing 41mph in a 40 mph zone …..:rolleyes:

Easy revenue stream ……. o_O

They should keep out of politics and get on with policing. They should not threaten to ban away fans because they don’t have the authority we live in a democracy not a dictatorship. Maybe this guy should apply for a job where Police can do whatever they like maybe in Russia or North Korea

Maybe that's where he got the idea from. He's a pig.

I think our fans have much better experiences with coppers when we travel away. I think some of our fans highlighted how good the police were away at Preston last season.

The problem with SYP is they still think its the 80's and a football fan is like a piece of shit on the bottom of their shoe.

Its less fuck the police as a whole but more fuck South Yorkshire Police.
Have to agree about Preston they were spot on. Having a laugh and keeping it all low key

The Police, quite rightly, come in for a fair amount of criticism both here and elsewhere. However one cannot ignore the fact that if it weren't for a sizeable minority of cerebrally deficient fuckwits on both sides of the football divide (and in English football in general), then this criticism would be far more effective. I've witnessed Blades 'fans', on more occasions than I care to recall, behaving in ways that would put a troop of shitfaced gibbons to shame.

Police chiefs in South Yorkshire are unhappy at the £1.3 million spent policing football matches in the region. According to the Star they either want clubs to contribute more or they have suggested baning away fans for some games Hopefully it is a negotiation tactic and the request for increased contributions I can agree with, but banning away fans - the vast majority of whom are responsible - would be totally unfair.
I want the South Yorkshire police to police football properly not just treat all football fans as thugs and rabid animals.

I think syp could probably police the games for much less and do a better job than they currently do instead of begging for cash

They could save thousands by scaling down the over Policed games we already have, and cutting their overtime bill...They could also get a few quid scrap for the useless steel walls...what a waste of money.
A great point - there are loads of matches where the away contingent are quite low and/or with no reputation for violence yet SYP have sometimes as many police on duty as fans !

That's the problem -its the senior SYP and management and not necessarily the beat bobbies

True but one could just as easily say if no one broke the law we wouldn’t need the police at all.

Most of the problems seem to be cos fans clash around the ground just before and after the game so make away fans be in the ground 45 mins before KO and hold em back for 30 mins after.

And sort out that silly netting out on BL end. Put in something good enough so we can sell those seats like they do in other big derbies around the UK without so many empty seats.

For me when police are actually doing there job. It will be handy because 1st derby policing might have cost 175,000. But they were absolutely useless & norwich after match problems werent started by fans. Because everyone knew in that stadium the way 2nd half had progressed. It was dangerous alot of emotions were heightened. So why nobody thought lets just keep norwich in for their safety. Because it was common sense to me

So how can south Yorkshire police struggle at 2nd tier derby. Yet manchester police in april had a potentially title deciding derby go off without a hitch

Because by the sounds of SYP's latest outburst they have a vested interest in letting things kick off now and again. It stinks.

Strange they don't charge pubs and clubs in the city centre for policing the streets on Friday/Saturday nights, don't mump about Rugby, Cricket or any other spectator sport. The S. Yorks deputy chief constable is a right wanker, says they could have 27 more officers if they didn't have to police football, what for to bully retired old women tree protesters?

Football should be quite easy to police in contrast to other spectator sports. Worst of all being Horse Racing, which is becoming increasingly volatile the more it becomes more of a 'day out' for utter bellends looking to lose big and scrap loudly.

Simple, The Saint Ledger will be run behind closed doors if it carries on, problem solved ;)

The Police have a duty to maintain order in public spaces, it is part of their remit, it's not the responsibility of football clubs, whilst supporters are not inside their stadiums. South Yorkshire have five football teams (if you include the Pigs) so Policing their respective matches is going to be costly burden, compared to neighbouring forces.

In my opinion, the trouble with the Police's controlling of Football matches is generally due to the fact that those high ranking officers charged with directing staff on the ground, have very often never been to a Football match in their lives and dealing with violent incidents is just an unpleasant distant memory for most of them

It is just another example of high level incompetence for SYP, to file alongside Rotherham child abuse, Hillsbrough and Cliff Richard debacle, why is anyone surprised? :(

Of course like others say SYP have a vested interest in letting it kick off now and then to justify their over policing. Like they did a few year back when Millwall were allowed to attack Rotherham fans in a family area. All South Yorkshire knew it was a designated flag day and they would be out in numbers looking for trouble all that is except South Yorkshire's police, useless is a compliment other peoples thoughts are negligent and incompetent.

Back in the day we deserved to be treated like that but the majority of fans these days behave and need to treated with respect
