To SUFC,

Here the under thanks, agree that Sheffield United Football Club should take the following actions.

  1. Stop playing Annie's song before kick off
  2. Stop playing goal music when we score.
  3. Stop putting the lyrics to "Greasy Chip Butty" on the scorebaord (although if 1 is done then 3 should follow.)

We feel that it is taking the atmosphere away from Bramall lane as when the song finishes it then goes awfully silent around the ground.

We feel that as fans we can generate our own atmosphere without being prompted to sing it.

It is also patronising to place the lyrics on the screen.

We would appreciate it if you would take all the signatures/thanks below as a reason to do this.

Thanks

Matt

Are you serious?

1. why remove annies song? its about the only time there is any atmosphere in the ground!
2.why stop playing the goal music? youve no valid excuse for this, other than it probably just annoys you personally, its good for the younger fans and can prompt some noise levels (atmosphere)
3. they dont put the lyrics on there to be patronising, im sure they're fully aware you know the words - its for the 'new/young' fans that dont know the words and will want to join in.

if we didnt have any music played it would be even quieter than it is now.

No Thanks Matt.

I've emailed a guy at the club just now to see what his opinion is on things

1. I love annie's song and it identifies us as a set of supporters and as a football club. I doubt Liverpool would stop singing 'You'll never walk alone.' It makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck and I would be very sad if they dropped it.

2. I think there is an argument both ways for this. It isn't sung as enthusiastically as it used to be so they should probably knock it on the head now or at least change the song.

3. Like the other chap said earlier, it's probably for the benefit of the younger fans and I don't have a problem with it because I don't look at it. There is always the option of ignoring it as well :)

I think as far as a petition-like campaign goes you would need a majority of the bramall lane following to voice it for the club to change anything. Maybe you'll get it.......we'll see!

Personally, I have much bigger concerns regarding the Blades at the moment!

I dread to think how these younger fans will turn out!

We always used to sing the GCB at the start of a game - it was always one of the first, if not the first, to be sung. I fail to see how removing the music would change this for the worse. Unfortunately, nowadays you have an attitude of people singing when prompted, and then sitting back in silence, until being prompted by either the 2nd half music, or the Tom Hark music (which has now been so over-used that it even starts to grate when I go back and watch the 2002/03 season review).

Ditching the music, and leaving it to the fans to create the atmosphere, would be far better to the overall atmosphere in my opinion. I think Tom Hark failed to be used on the opening game of either this season or last season, and it was a breath of fresh air.

I'm not bothered about the music before each half, but it's not as if it wouldn't happen anyway.

One thing that bugs me is goal music. I'm sure people would rather hear the roar of the crowd, especially in big games. The Tom Hark tends to cut the celebrations a bit short for me, don't know if anyone else thinks the same?

I agree with Bianco's post.

The most important thing we have as a club and as Sheffield United supporters is our IDENTITY.

The GCB song is key to this, and any fan who takes his kids can teach them the words, we don't need a screen for this. We don't want our next generation of fans to generate atmosphere in the same way TV studio audiences do...are we going to have stewards holding up 'applause' signs after goals?

Tom Hark was fun in 02/03 for about 5 minutes but really, it's been 7 years...it's time to move on. In fact it actually makes the atmosphere worse imo as there's people like me who don't like to sing it after we've scored and would rather get an actual CLUB song going. Instead everyone just goes der der der for 30 seconds then sits down again.

End this madness!

Please elaborate..........

With pleasure....

We never had all this fluffy americanised crap at games, we made our own atmosphere and the attraction for me was the atmosphere at games.

If that's being replaced with the stuff we have nowadays, then its a massive turn off for me.

Kids will think that the "norm" is a Steelers type atmosphere of piped music and "whoos". Fine for the Steelers, but its not an atmosphere I want at the lane.

I want the atmosphere we had at the Carling cup game v Leeds in 2003.

UPDATE:
Response from the lane is that they've passed my comments on to the people that have a say on match days (I elaborated on all three of Matt Biancos points) and they'll give feedback either way. :D

Is this really what it's come to??? We're debating whether the club anthem and goal music should be played at matches. We're also debating whether the tech staff should transmit Annie's song lyrics to the scoreboard!

It just shows how dire and dull things are that we have nothing better to talk about!!! I contributed to this thread earlier and was happy to but after reading all the posts up to now it just made me think how sad it all is.

Such mundane discussions about what should be a vibrant, exciting club. If you can't laugh about it it's just depressing  :(

Not taking into account my previous post I can see your point here yes.

I agree but the one thing I would say is it used to be far better when they played the whole of Annie's Song 5 or ten minutes before kick off. I remember my first home league derby and when Annie's Song was blaring out of the speakers, and the fans around me's mouthes it was one of my favourite football moments.

Doesn't worry me in anyway, I like Annies song and agree it identifies us, if they want to put the words up that's fine I don't need them others might.

I am not a lover of the Tom Hawk goal derderderder music and don't wave my arms up and down but don't mind if others do it. I have kids sat near me and they love it, if it makes their match day experience better then great. Hopefully they will be the future season ticket buyers who take their kids because they had a good time.

That's a parents responsibility! :) my daughter knew them beforeshe was two due to having it sung to her at bedtime every night

I don't buy this. I think what they love is United scoring, how everyone goes mental and feeling part of a big group. I think if we sang a song (I dunno, let's just say GCB) after a goal, they be just as excited about singing that as going "derderder".

Goal music is a bit naff, though I didn't mind "The Professionals" so much.

Exactly. What the hell were kids doing before 2002 when we scored - looking around in confusion?

someone said dont take away Annies song because it is part of sufc. I agree. It is as much part of the blades as we are. But we manage ok to generate atmosphere away from home each week without any music been played. Someone said its americanised. It is, if u want music and noise go an watch the steelers. They should play the song in full before, after or at half time. Not at the start of each half. Thats my main gripe, not so much tom hark. We'll always sing annies song always will we just dont need to be MADE tosing it.

>someone said dont take away Annies song because it is part of sufc
it is part of the fans of sufc.. the fans own it .. not the club.. i won't be prompted when to sing it.. it is our perogative..
perhaps the club would like to prompt the intro to 'come and have a go.. '.. or 'you're gonna get your f.... head kicked in' as well at appropriate moments? :-)

Club Emailed

This is the message that I sent to the club earlier this week, they've promised to give me feedback so i'm waiting to see what they come back with

This might not be your remit, but I thought I'd follow up on what we talked about on Saturday evening.

1. Greasy Chip Butty Lyrics on the Big Screen
As I mentioned on Saturday, most people we spoke to during the match didn't like the lyrics, fair enough to have the photo montage, but if we have to have the lyrics on the screen its almost turning us into a Karaoke club.

I also feel that if you don't know the Lyrics, then you're not a true blade. Lets also not forget, its a fans song adopted by the club and as there is a great deal of debate about Magnet or Maggots, its incorrect for the club to side with either.

In short its a little bit tacky, Americanised and patronising.

2. Goal Music
During the 2003 Season this was great, but its time has gone. Its old hat now and if anything it kills the atmosphere and sense of celebration when we score.

3. GCB Intro at the start of each half
As per point 1, this is quite tacky, Americanised and patronising.

These things work for the Steelers, but not for the Blades.

Just to reiterate, I don't know if this is your remit, but these issues are being discussed on the Forums at present and I thought I'd let you know what a few of us thought.

Is there anyway that if the fans put a petition together that the club would be willing to listen? Or is this all part of the stale family atmosphere which we have now have?

Looking forward to hearing back from you

Any word back yet Swiss?

Not from the matchday people, my "contact" has said they'll come back... perhaps its a serious issue at the club.

Blackwell out has been replaced on the agenda by "that shite music"
