It's an old adage but the opposition can't score when they don't have the ball. The ball retention, which we can give attribute mostly to Coutts, Fleck and Duffy has also dispelled the myth that we need a Basham type physical presence in the middle. I was guilty of thinking that without Basham in the middle Coutts and Fleck might suffer, but they have flourished.
Having good footballers at the back such as Freeman, Lafferty, Ebanks-Landell, Wright and O'Connell also helps.
I too worried about not having an enforcer but the facts are there for all to see. We are dominating possession because we have players in there who know how to retain it. The fact we give it away less means we have less need of someone to win it back as their primary purpose.
Plus Fleck and Coutts have shown themselves to be more robust than expected. Those two coming together has the feeling of when Tonge was moved to the left under Warnock or when Hodges was added under Bassett. Something has just clicked.
Just need something similar to happen up front then we will be well away.
