So many fans have requested us to play a back 4. Please do not ever post about a back 4 again that was awful.

First half with the 5 was so much better, I hope CW didn’t change to a back 4 to listen to a group of fans who don’t know anything.

That's interesting. 'Don't know anything'.

Given we have lost, comprehensively, most of the games this season (count the fuckers, please) with a back five ... and many of them with Egan and Basham too ... you might want to realign you judgement on who it is who 'knows nothing'.

Unless you can explain why we lost those games, your argument is invalid.

Why is that different to any other game? We always switch to a back 4 because the back 5 always sees us go behind! Wilder doesn't seem to notice this.

If there's anything that can be said about CW tenure it's that he's easily swayed by opinions on S2 4SU.

Well the back 4 was fine against Villa, second half. To be honest I've no idea what formation we were playing 2nd half, we seemed to be still playing a 5 initially - But I finished up losing interest we were that crap.

I know. I can see him disappearing up the tunnel at FT saying 'go debrief the players Knilly, I am just gonna go an log on to S24SU in my office'.

Back 4 or 5 without desire, leadership or an ounce of nouse when the oppo have the ball then we’re fucked.
The thing that baffles me is, no matter what shape you play, or how many numbers you put behind the ball, if you keep giving possession back to quality or even mediocre opposition they will score.

I fear you are the one who knows nothing....it was the 5 at the back which helped us to go 2 down as we simply lost the midfield and won zero second balls (which I said would happen on a separate thread). I thought the defence did ok considering the awful predicament they find themselves in. We don’t have any quality in midfield to service a distinctly average (at best) strike force and despite trying to go forwards in the early part of the second half the inevitability of not being able to score 1 let alone 3 goals hit the players hard and a pitiful display ensued. If you bother to look at most games this season you will note that the most positive passages of play (which are still a million miles away from last season) end up with us going to a 4-4-2 (or 4-4-1-1) 4-3-1-2 always depressingly having already conceded. The players rightly take the blame but for the coaches to continue to employ and support the same system at the start of every single game having lost now 80% of our games surely one has to start to question one’s sanity!

Deck chairs...Titanic.

There is a lack of ability in the available players.

It is almost academic who we pick because:

1. The defenders make too many mistakes.
2. The midfielders turn over possession like the ball is lava.
3. The strikers seldom create anything for themselves and have one of the lowest conversion rates in football.

Good Post.
As I see it 5 at the back means all our attacks are dependent on wing backs getting forward with support coming from the nearest midfielder who is playing about 5 yards infield. With Norwood playing at the base of our 3 in midfield we don't get support through the middle nor do we look to try to play through the middle. We have become predictable and ineffective. And while the strikers aren't up to much we are not able to provide many opportunities to score.
442 or 4411 would serve us better. Some will say we don't have the players to play 442. Well it's a sad state of affairs to spend millions on a squad and not to be able to change formation when required.

What a load of bollox

It’s got nothing to do with whether there’s 4 or 5. It’s the players that are being used. You can have 10 at back but when players continuously make individual errors you’ll concede goals

Formation watch last night:

1-45: 3-5-2
46-58: 3-4-1-2 McGoldrick as no 10 behind McBurnie and Brewster
58-68: 3-4-1-2 McBurnie as no 10 behind Brewster and Mousset
68-78: 3-4-1-2 McBurnie as no 10 behind Sharp and Mousset
78-90: 4-4-2 diamond. Lundstram at the base flanked by Fleck and Bogle. McBurnie still behind Sharp and Mousset

It can be hard to assess the above. We looked a bit desperate and tried to push players forward. I had to watch closely if it was a diamond immediately after Sharp came on.

Fair play Bergen the diamond was definitely not easy to identify given it looked like we were playing 2 at the back for the majority of the closing 15mins! Putting aside the individual mistakes etc the lack of a top quality DCM (Norwood is really struggling and Lunny had no idea how to play this role) and ACM (McG and McB are not 10’s) really hurt us when trying to come from behind. We have done well in terms of points creation when leading (far too few occasions) but when chasing a game the lack of quality in the spine offers us little or no chance. Arguably, these 2 positions will be even more important to fill in the Championship. If we can hold on to Berge for next year his strength, mobility, and passing ability in the DCM role could be crucial albeit he will have less time on the ball. The no 10 role is a far more difficult puzzle to fix.

He insisted on starting 3 5 2 yesterday despite having only 2 centre backs. No criticism of Baldock but Southampton exploited this from the off and concentrated putting balls into the RCB channel. If ever there was a day to start with a different formation it was yesterday based on what we had available. Second half was irrelevant as his starting formation had already cost us the game by then.

Cannot believe there are some people who won't except that it is even worth trying a different formation to one that has largely failed for nearly 12 months now,

my theory on this is that hes had that much slating about this 352 on social media that hes putting 2 fingers up to everybody who thinks we should change shape and saying im the manager im doing what i want to do but the stats dont add up 22 defeats out of 28 games should tell him the system isnt working
