Nice work lad, keep it up!

Sheffield United defender Harry Maguire has won the Football League Young Player of the Month award for August.

The 18-year-old has been an ever-present this season in the Blades' strong start to the League One season.

His manager Danny Wilson said: "I have been very impressed with him so far, not just with his ability but with his all-round professionalism.

Maguire added: "To get an award like this in my first month of my first full season feels great."

United are currently second in the League One table, and Sheffield-born Maguire was part of a defence that kept three clean sheets in August, as well as scoring his first senior goal, a header in the 2-0 victory at Oldham on 6 August.

"Winning this award was a big surprise," said Maguire. "I am becoming more confident with every game. I am a young lad who is still learning but as I gain more experience I should become a better player."

Maguire started out at Barnsley before joining the Blades as a 13-year-old. He was a regular in the United Under-18 side and the reserves before breaking into the first team in the latter stages of last season as the Blades battled unsuccessfully against relegation from the Championship.

His first involvement in a matchday squad was against Leeds in March but he had to wait until 12 April before he made his senior debut as a substitute in the 2-0 home defeat by Cardiff City.

Maguire wants to end the season celebrating promotion
"What I really like about him is his calmness," added Wilson, who took over as United boss during the summer. "It is very impressive to see such a calm head on young shoulders.

"His all-round game is good and although we all know that he still has a lot to learn, he is continuing to get better and better and his award is well deserved."

Maguire models himself on Chelsea and England centre-back John Terry, but at present the major influence on his career is fellow Blades central defender Neill Collins.

The 28-year-old, who has played for the likes of Wolves, Sunderland, Preston and Leeds, has been alongside Maguire at the heart of the Blades defence all season.

"I would not have won this award without Neill," added Maguire.

Maguire is one of a string of home-grown players starting to make an impact in the first team at Bramall Lane as the Blades look to bounce back from relegation at the first attempt.

The likes of goalkeeper George Long and midfielder Matthew Harriott have played for the first team this season after coming through the ranks, while another home-grown talent, striker Jordan Slew, was bought by Premier League Blackburn Rovers on transfer deadline day.

All of the aforementioned played appeared in the FA Youth Cup final against Manchester United last season, although Maguire has limited recollections of the 6-3 aggregate defeat after he was knocked out during the second leg at Old Trafford.

"My runners-up medal was probably the biggest award I had before this young player trophy but I remember nothing about it after I was knocked out in the second half," he added.

"I was unable to collect my medal. In the end somebody sent it to me through the post."

Maguire still feels uncomfortable in front of the camera but is certainly targeting more success during the current season.

"We've got a great team with a fantastic spirit," added the young defender.

"As a young lad from Sheffield it would be great to win promotion and take the club on the first step towards being back to where it belongs."

It was fine until I read that he models himself on John Terry.

Lock up your daughters/wives/girlfriends!

And he uses 'of' instead of 'have' in his tweets Broomers !

Puts him in the shop window unfortunately and I'll be surprised if we're not fending off bids in January, even more if we turn them down.

Looks very calm and confident and easy to get carried away with him in the same way as Slew at this stage but he has been beaten for pace a few times and still has a lot to learn. No doubt he'd benefit a full season at this level but as with Slew, it'll probably be down to him at the end of the day.

Lets hope it is not cursed like the MOM award or has it already taken effect?

McCabe will be happy, I expect the first rumour of his departure within the end of September. Initially a loan move to **insert name of a reasonable championship club** but with a permanent deal at the end of january.

He's just added another zero to the clubs valuation of him.

The fee of course will be undisclosed

Anyone a bit puzzled why this is splashed all over the Beeb?

It's on the homepage now and it's the second most watched video on BBC Sport.

Strange.

It helps that he's got it for the whole football league and not just Div 3

Still a long way to go I think. I couldnt go Tuesday, but heard he got destroyed by Huddersfield.

Excellent end to the video when Wilson hands him the trophy with the words 'Stick it on your mantlepiece, kidda.'

Well done Harry..!

Not so. He has, indeed, got 'an old head on his shoulders'.

He got one of their's booked near the end (quite a feat with that ref.) and was, incredibly, showboating towards the final whistle.

The bloke next to me said he's a bit 'heavy' to be another Jags and I said he's not that type of player. More like Dawson at Spurs. And hopefully not like 'ol starfish Terry. I also said he would be in the shop window soon....

Just going by Deadbats report that said he got outmuscled and "done" by their attackers.

The culture of the club is to sell it's good young players as quickly as possible to get cash in the blackhole. This is a policy that has been supported by many Blades fans if the short-termism salivating over the cash received for the Kyles is anything to go by.

Harry will have looked at the Kyles and Slew and will be expecting to be gone by January if he is any good.

We don't have a culture of developing young players in the first team over a season or two with the hope of building success around them - accepting that at some point they may move on.

from a fans perspective it's maybe better if Harry turns out to be a decent player but not a great player. That way we fill a shirt with a decent player rather than losing a good one and not being able to re-invest the money to replace him.

True the culture has changed these days and Jags was the last player we held on to for a good few years before eventually gave in and sold him. Also by that point no one could begrudge Jags the move as he was clearly ready for regular first team PL football.

These days we will be lucky to have a decent young player for half a season before they are gone. If Maguire is here by the end of the season Id be surprised as the lure of of any cash for players seems too much to resist.
