Okay so a lot has been said about the current physical ability and height of the current squad. We all remember and know the teams in this league well and the ones who get promoted to the championship are big, strong, physical teams that impose themselves on games but also have the degree of skill to be able to win football matches.

Time and time again we have been bullied in this league, in contract to games against championship and premier league teams where we've been able to establish ourselves, put the ball on the ground and play very attractive, counter attacking football. No doubt that this team will do well if it is promoted to the championship.

Anyway, I thought I'd look up the actual height statistics to show how exactly 'small' this team is compared to ones who are likely to be promoted this season and who got promoted last season...

Sheff Utd 176.1cm
------------------------------
Bristol City 182.7cm
Preston NE 183.4cm
Wolves 182.4cm
Brentford 181cm
Rotherham 183.6cm

To me this confirms what we already knew, the team is too small and are getting bullied by nasty league one career players. However what this validates is that there is a consistent average height of teams that get promoted from this level and how far we are from that.

You should be paid for that research S11, clearly no one on NC's staff did the gruelling leg work you put in.

I think this is a great post save for this one point. Teams in the Championship are bigger, fitter, faster and stronger than League one teams. We would get eaten alive in the Championship with this squad.

Yes, I know we have done very well in some games against teams in a higher league. This is IMHO because:

- some of those teams were in terrible form at the time (Fulham, QPR, Villa, Charlton)
- we have been given more space at times than we've had in league games.
- we have, for one reason or another, saved our very best performances for these games. We cannot, and have not, produced that form regularly in league games.

Back to the main point. Yes, you need some big players. They need to have some ability too, but taller players helps.

I hate it when decisions are made re transfers in isolation, ignoring the make up of the squad generally. We had it in the close seasons in 2010 and 2013 when Blackwell and Weir seemingly went out of their way to sign players with no goalscoring track record or ability, and we've had it this year with our non scoring non assisting tiny midfield. It's bizarre.

And Clough should be ashamed of the number of goals we are conceding from set pieces. That is the most obvious legacy of his policy re centre half selection, which has been a disaster.

It may not be much of an analogy but Revolution jnr, a centre half by trade, scored his fifth goal of the season yesterday. They are all from corners. One reason for this is that he's a head taller than most of the opposition back 4. Sometimes it really is that simple.

Swallow your pride, Nigel. If Collins is fit, or gets fit, play him.

It's too late for him to fix this problem this season. Only kind of solution is bringing Collins back and that won't happen.

Someone above me has already said but but there is plenty of doubt. I reckon we'd come straight back down.

The Championship is also a league full of big, strong, super-fit bullies, but they're also generally better footballers than you find in this league.

Interesting stats. Which match did you get that Blades average height from as a matter of interest?

Comparing our current strongest team with last year's succesful team, that won about 10 on the trot and kept clean sheets galore.
We've lost Maguire, Collins and Coady who were tall, replaced by Basham, McCeveley and Coutts.
Baxter was up front and he'd now be replaced by Davies who is taller.
So not too much change overall height-wise.

The main issue is that Maguire was a massively commanding presence in both boxes. Nobody in the current squad is.
Replacing a towering £2.5M rated central-defender in the third division was never going to be easy.
Despite trying SEVEN different new players in that position, we simply haven't been able to do it.

Personally, I don't see bringing a half-fit Collins back as any sort of solution at all.
Surely to goodness, there must be a Maguire play-a-like somewhere that we can bring in on loan for 3 months?
That would take McCeveley out of the firing line and potentially allow Basham to play in midfield once Kennedy returns.

Potentially:-
____________Howard
Brayford Loan-CB Kennedy Harris,
_____Basham Doyle J.Wallace
Done_____S.Davies________Murphy

It could make all the difference between play-offs and promotion or not.
I don't give a chuff how many players we've already signed this season, one more is clearly still urgently needed.

The added time on the ball would compensate at a higher level I think as we have a few very talented players who with more time can be very dangerous.

Regardless, we'll have to see what happens by May.

.

I agree. It's been a while now but my memories of the Championship were that everyone is six inches taller and a yard faster than our current level. A lot of games were wars of attrition. I think there are a few good footballers in this league but they are in this league because they don't have the physical attributes to play higher.

Height isn't the only problem, the main cause of our shite league position is mostly inconsistent performances, selections and negativity.

I'm 6'4", but I think I can be ruled out of this season's rush to the play-offs, because I'm also over 16 stone and over 60

We only need two big lads, one up front and one in defense, with a touch of speed and a touch of class AND A LOT OF BEING ABLE TO HEAD THE BLOODY BALL !!!

Our team is more suited to the Championship, but we need to get their first, and we are a long way from it.

After tonight they should all be a few cm taller. Chest puffed out, heads up high.... Confidence will see us through
