Auto without question.

Hate the play-offs, SUFC involved or not. OK in the US of A but not here ta.

I never understood why if they have to have play offs , surely the onus should be on the lower final placed team to win ie , if as we have on 3 occasions finish 3rd , if its 0-0 or 1-1 at 90 minutes, why have penalties , final league position should take over

we have to go up , auto or play off not bothered , as long as we go up
not for any reason than to shut up the whingers, till august

Just because everyone knew what the rules were before the season started doesn't make the rules fair. If the League decided before the start of a season that any team playing in red would only get two points for a win, that wouldn't be fair would it, even though the red teams knew that was the rule before they played a game.

The whole point of a league system is by each team playing each other home and away to provide a ranking of merit. Logic dictates that those at the top of the merit table should be rewarded. Rewarding the 6th placed team and not the 3rd is crazy

The play offs have nothing to do with the league except that it gives four teams the chance to get promoted that didn’t get an automatic spot. It is a new competition. You are attempting to provide a link that isn’t there.

play offs are a load of wank. they shouldnt even exist.

top 3 go up, always worked and always fair.
but no, the 6th place team can go up after finishing 20 points behind the 3rd place team, just so some bellends in suits can make a few quid.

eh? theres countless teams over the years who would have got promoted under the old system, but ended up not going up cos of the play offs. the play offs arent a bonus chance for other teams to go up, they take a promotion place from a team that without the play offs they would have had already...and give 3 other (worse) teams the chance to basically steal it from them.

Have to say I'm surprised at the results although as I said earlier, it looks like it's turned into an anti play-offs vote rather than a straight choice of one or the other which was the original question. Just because you don't think the play-offs should exist doesn't mean you wouldn't prefer a great day out and victory at Wembley if it happened.

Anyway, onto Walsall...................

Both Darren and WalthamstowBlade would be proud of the avoiding of the evidence as presented that you've achieved here Jim!

For the record I answered the question as posed - this once, I'd take a play off victory over finishing second behind a shite team.

It wasn't meant to be a discussion about the rights and wrongs of the play-offs, it was a simple question, would fans prefer a play-off victory at Wembley over finishing 2nd if it could be guaranteed. Whether the play-offs are fair or necessary or a rip-off etc etc is irrelevant to the point of the question :)

Apart from the fact that whether you qualify for the play offs depends entirely on your league position.

Apart from the fact that from the 1890's until 1974, in respect of the top two divisions it was always 2 up 2 down :-)

In respect of the 2nd/3rd tier it was two up two down as well from when they came in in the early 1920's, but as the tird tier was divided into north and south sections until 1958 only the champions went up from each section. When they stopped that and brought in 3rd and 4th tiers from 1958, it was 2 up 2 down between 2nd and 3rd tiers and four up four down between third and fourth tiers.

The play offs are actullay a reversion to the original system of test matches that was instituted when the 2nd division came in in 1892. there was no automatic promotion or relegation at all and the bottom 3 in the top tier played the top 3 in the second tier to see who went up or stayed up. That's how United first got promoted in 1893. They finished second in the 2nd tier and beat Accrington 1-0 in th Test Match to get promoted.

See, we don't always choke in the big games :-)

Even though I would prefer the feeling of going up through the playoffs because of the pure emotion - this is absolutely spot on and I agree that they should be scrapped.

It's ridiculous that a team can finish 15-20 points behind another and start on a level playing field for promotion in a 2 legged affair.

but a 15-20 points ahead would indicate that the 3rd place team is better that the 4-6th placed teams, so there shouldn't be any problems in beating the other teams. The fact that players bottle when the pressure is on is another thing

That's true, but games like those are a complete lottery. If 3rd place has one sent off inside 10 minutes and go back home to a 2 goal deficit it's an uphill struggle.

I always feel there should be a better advantage depending on the points difference. So many points = a goal start.

The one-off playoff final is definitely just bottling it in our case, it's the semi finals that I think can be unfair on certain teams.

Well what's wrong with my argument? In this league the teams that finish 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th go into a new competition. It is called the play offs. It is a second chance if you like for promotion. Indeed I remember the former Chairman of the FL Brian Mawhinney stating as such.

You might not like it Darren (nor do I to some extent) but those are the facts. Other than finishing in the league in those positions it has no bearing on anything else. In simple terms finishing 3rd is no better than 6th, you get another chance.

I think it would be a better feeling to win the playoffs than finish second, especially after all the failures we've had.

After never even seeing us score at a neutral venue, I just want to experience what I've witnessed other fans do against us in the other 4 finals. One day, I want to go so f*cking mental celebrating a GOAL, never mind a win in a game like that. We have to do it in the end, surely.

Sums it up perfectly for me
