"Assessing what we have" has ruined us

Agreed it was so obvious to us fans but Adkins needed to show he was giving everyone a chance in order to keep positivity and get players onboard. However he could have done this and bought the players in as they didn't necessarily have to start any new signings immediately. I think he has been 'over fair' if that is even an actual critisism.
Yes, that's the point I was trying to make on the other thread 'is this it'.
I'm hoping NA has had his suspicions and lined up potential players to bring in, hence the quick signing of Edgar.

It's not the losing tbh, it's the fact that nothing had changed. The realisation that all our enthusiasm could be dashed by yet another unsuccessful season.

I feel sorry for the poor bastards who went. It's one thing losing 4.0. It's another when your players don't turn up and defend like a pub team.

I think most people have calmed down now but we had a big bubble of positivity and hope kicked out of us. The Edgar signing helps but I think Saturday was a stark realisation that we are a long way off where we need to be.

The deficiencies of our team were never going to be solved by game one. Adkins is a good manager but he doesn't have a magic wand. This is exactly why football is so crazy and why there is such a ridiculous turnover of managers. Instant results are expected.

It is unrealistic and unreasonable to expect a free flowing promotion winning side at this stage. That doesn't however excuse an appalling result....we just have to forget about it and not take it to heart too much.

I'm confident the manager will add one or two more players to the squad before the window shuts and given time to work a bit more with them he will turn us into a team that can challenge. It will happen soon, I'm sure of it.....but not overnight.

I don't think it's crazy for the new manager to notice we have no centre backs and to sign one as soon as possible. I do agree that we're not suddenly going to be a great side. We were far from being a league 1 side on Saturday. Tonight seems more promising.

That's just it though. He has signed one and maybe he was one on his shortlist that he had to wait for. If he had signed two centre backs for the sake of it in the summer I would have been less happy.

We're already shit enough back there I don't want more players that aren't good enough. No one lets good players to easily and the transfer market is a joke these days.

Barney another new thread about assessing the squad
Erm, this thread has an entirely different point to the other one you just bumped? It was actually the first thread about "assessing" the squad and "clean slates" and how much that hampered last season.

Glad you brought it back up. As you can see, I got shouted down for criticising the "clean slate" treatment. It now seems to be well recognised that it was in fact a mistake.

Not really sure what your argument is but it seems extremely petty and unnecessary to bump all these threads.

Couldn't have been more right about the clean slate treatment either. It cost us a season. Doing something all the fans knew we shouldn't have done cost us a season. It really is unbelievable and inexcusable for a club of our size.

Even with the mistakes made last summer the League was such a state that with a bit of ambition in January we could still have put a strong run in to the play offs or even Auto with Burtons collapse.

Instead the board chose to write the rest of this season off. Hopefully they wrote it off because they didn't trust Adkins and not because we are potless. If it's the latter reason then this summer could be another disappointing one.

If you go back at the time, lots of discussion was not about the quality of our players, but about the difficulty in getting rid of our players even if he wanted to. You didn't seem to grasp the difficulty in moving our contracted players on, when the likely destination was "Shrewsbury".

The biggest thing that's happened between now and then is contracts getting near to expiry. As this has progressed, Adkins has binned off just about everything he can. Wilder is continuing that process, thankfully.

We decided not invest in January and it cost us a fighting chance of getting in the play-offs or better.

Even in January McCabe was sounding out Wilder to replace Adkins I reckon.

And so the game of "If I post a million threads I'll be right one day" continues. Next installment along in 5,4,3....
