Ashley Ward

Also, for any younger fans out there, don’t worry you didn’t miss much by not seeing him.

I think the issue with Ward wasn’t so much that he was poor. It was more about expectation.
The local Barnsley fans really rated him as a top striker, he came with a good reputation, so think we paid him big wages by our standards so we pinned our hopes on him and he was a big let down.

The likes of D’jaffo and Allison were just bit part strikers trying their best, so were more appreciated.
Think I remember Allison playing in the Liverpool league cup semi and Sammy Hyppia really struggled against him. Wayne “Lead boots” Alison was built like a fridge and impossible to knock off the ball. Think Warnock just told him to stand in the penalty spot area when we attacked and you could see Hyppia and Co panicking. He proved to be really effective to bring on as sub.

Not just the expectation, but Ward has more or less admitted that he was more interested in his business than he was in football by the time he joined us.

The fact that players as limited as Allison and D'Jaffo (11 goals in 69 appearances) could reach cult hero status simply by putting themselves about and giving their level best is a testament to how pathetic Ward really was to be so hated. It wasn't a time when we weren't willing to look past the limitations of a player and appreciate the service they gave.

I originally registered on here in order to nominate this sack of shit as my all time least favourite blades player. Unfortunately the thread disappeared before my registration was complete. He was the only person i've seen try to win a header without seemingly being able to jump off of the floor. When you combine that with a lack of pace, a feeble goalscoring record and a level of effort that would make Kevin the teenager embarrassed he has no competition in my eyes as the worst player i've had the misfortune to watch in thirty odd years of watching the blades. The only plus point in his time here was that he was frequently injured so Andy Gray got to play a lot - and at least he managed to raise a sweat and score the occasional goal here and there

Absolute Cart Horse by the time he came here.

Try imagining Dean Henderson up front and you aren’t far off.

Good player for Barnsley, Derby and Blackburn. Came to us after ITV Digital fucked over Bradford. One of Warnocks 30+ free transfer strikers that didn’t pay off.

He was finished by the time he ended up here, but he did score in a win against Leeds if I recall correctly.

He scored the winner on our only trip to the hockey stadium (demolished ).25 quid to sit on scaffolding batons ......Any one else go ?

I had a mate who swore blind that Ward was 10 times the player Wayne Alison was. I remember that away game at Gillingham on Sky, 3-0, Pesch hat trick, all set up by Alison. All my mate could say wae 'if Ward did that, you'd still say he was crap'. Ignoring the fact that Alison DID do it and was still apparently useless.

My mate was a pillock.

Ashley Ward had exactly two good games for us, at home against Leeds and away at West Brom. Both 2-0 Blades I think.

Poor Poor signing. Very overrated. Best game i saw him have was away at Wigan one evening game we won.

other than that i can't remember him doing much at all

Wasn't there a story about a farmer shooting dead his dog? Or maybe I dreamt it, I have a habit of having bizarre dreams about long forgotten former players.

He used to shrink about 4 inches when going up for a header, he rounded his shoulders and his neck went into his body like a tortoise before he jumped. That's not the only aspect of his play that I'd liken to a tortoise either.

Connor Sammon modelled himself on our Ashley then ?
