There are too many occasions when our players are in good positions in front of goal and have a clear opportunity to shoot but instead choose to pass it wide where we seem to lose possession or make a more difficult angle to score from. This is so frustrating for fans when chances go begging when goal scoring opportunities seem to fizzle out. In my opinion the worst culprit for this is Paul Coutts. I am an admirer of most that he does such as making himself available to receive passes, keeping possession etc but he seems to be either low on confidence in his own ability to shoot , unfounded in my view or overly unselfish.

What I find worrying of late is this type of unselfish, shot shy performance seems to be rubbing off on young Brooksey.

I do wish he (and others in our team) could improve in this area as it would make him a far better player, improve our chances of winning and provide us fans with more entertainment and success. Fleck seems to have improved in this area recently.

If this is not through personal choice of the players concerned, but part of the CW/AK tactical game plan, I suggest that the plans are modified to make them less predictable for the opposition.

Not shot shy as such but we're certainly not clinical enough.

Last season I mentioned that we didn't convert enough of the easier chances at times.

This season we've had fewer chances but when they come we've not put them away.

We've also not had the key decisions go our way.

We've been very tippy tappy around the box so far this season.
More ruthlessness needed imo.

Not sure about this, Brooks seemed to shoot whenever he got a sniff from what I watched.
In general, I agree that Brooksey has not been shy at having a go but last night towards the end of the game there were a few chances that he chose to pass rather than shoot himself. This would be a shame if was to become his new norm, his shooting when given a chance has been quite refreshing to see and one of his strong points. I had concerns if he was being "persuaded" at some point to change.

Define a good position? If they are actually in a good position, then they probably ARE taking the shot. It's probably simple xG-based analysis, when everyone shouts shooooooooooot it's probably only about a 5% chance of a goal, and it's a better play to try to convert it into a much higher percentage chance, as long as you do so often enough to compensate. I'd rather have one chance you score half the time than eight fliers that go in one out of twenty tries

Yes.
And we lack confidence to do so.

Not necessary shot shy. Bit the shots we have are too close to the keeper. I felt a number of shits last night were straight at the keeper.

From where I was sitting, last Saturday and last night. I could see that there was a gap in the opposing defence in a direct line between our attackers and the opposition goal on a number of occasions where "we" chose to pass it wide of the goal. It seems as if sometimes "we" are trying too hard to score the perfect goal through "Barcelona style" inter=play. Please don't misunderstand, I love intricate passing moves but not at the expense of scoring or conceding goals, after all it is the team that scores most in a match tends to win.

We're not shot shy

We're creating clear cut chances shy

There may only be a 5% chance of scoring but last night, having spurned the opportunity we lost the ball more than 90% of the time resulting in no chance at all. Ched had one real shooting opportunity and slid it out wide - I couldn't believe it.

There is still one Sharp member of our team who believes in shoot first think later though!

That's correct.

If we had more direct attacking players we'd create more shooting opportunities.

With what we've currently got we have to work hard to create good chances. We're reliant on intricate passing and exploiting small spaces.

It annoys me sometimes though when players find themselves in a wide shooting position but wait to cross it instead, like Lavery late on last night. In those situations I'd much rather they just hit it hard at goal, near or far post.

Yes, and i think it's because our players are aware that this is a tougher league and good chances are harder to come by.
Whereas in league one we were constantly creating oppprtunities, in the championship the 10 minute period prior to a spell of pressure may have been spent defending deeply- blocking, clearing, facing waves of opposition attack.
Therefore when we get into a good position no-one wants to be the one to waste the chance, to potentially give the ball away again, having just gotten back onto the front foot. Psychologically it makes sense, even if in a footballing sense it doesn't.

The key is confidence and decision-making, which are harder things to teach than simply training to improve fitness/passing/ball-retention etc.
This is an aspect of our game i'm hoping will improve as we grow into this league and feel comfortable in it. We've earnt the right to be here so we should show it

Our new signing should increase the amount of shots ;).
