Are there enough quality candidates to warrant ditching Clough?

I think Nigel Clough should lose his job. But there does seem to be a shortage of quality alternatives who we could get to replace him. I've scratched my head and reckon that only the below names (scroll down) should be considered, and that's before you take into account whether they would do better than Clough AND be interested in us given our current league status.

For me, much comes down to whether we could attract Nigel Adkins. He disappointed at Reading but there's no denying the success he brought to Scunthorpe and Southampton, plus he has a proven track record of getting out of League One. Uwe Rosler should come into contention for me but he bombed at Wigan and doubts remain as to how much credit he should receive for Brentford's rise.

Paul Lambert did well at Norwich, seem to have an eye for lower league players but is a media relations disaster who ultimately had Villa playing some shocking football. He deserves a second chance, somewhere, but I'm not sure I'd like it to be us. Regardless, I think he'll land a Championship club.

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbank is fashionable but remains very inexperienced. Has he not just continued Gary Rowett's initial good work at Burton? But could he be a potential gem who is destined for bigger things? After all, he has achieved a league promotion on his CV which is more than Clough!

Ian Holloway and Darren Ferguson are far too risky as the squad requires tweaks rather than a massive player overhaul. Lee Clark would be a plausible, if uninspiring, choice. Did ok at Huddersfield but ultimately couldn't take them over the line. He struggled badly at Birmingham before inheriting the car crash that is Blackpool. I can't see a strong argument for replacing Clough with Clark then.

Phil Brown divides opinion but might be worth considering if Southend don't go up. Has the experience and now the lower league knowhow.

And for me, that's it. I don't see any Alex Neil's lurking around in Scotland who might be able to step up.

Thoughts?

Nigel Adkins
Ian Holloway
Lee Clark
Uwe Rosler
Paul Lambert
Darren Ferguson
Dean Smith
Robert Page
Jimmy Floyd Hasselbank
Phil Brown

Only Adkins strikes me as a better choice than Clough out of that lot. I wouldn't be averse to a young forward thinking, hungry, continental manager. we've never had a manager from outside the British Isles, would be a risky but worthwhile experiment, look how well Karanka did at Boro.

Off that list only Adkins is worth ditching Clough for.

I've thought about that, and I'm not sure how possible but I'd go for Jose's assistant Rui Faria if we went down that route

Up and coming Scandanavian manager - think his name's Brian Deane ?? ah no going to chesterfield - convenient forl ater , he won't have to move house either. Not sure how popular he would be with the supporters though :p

And that chap at Watford

Alex Sabella it is then.

I would have added Paul Cook to the list but we've already missed the boat there, as we have with Stuart McCall who until last season did a great job at Motherwell.

From the list, Adkins is overwhelmingly the strongest candidate and lowest risk if he could be persuaded.

I wouldn't choose any of the others over Clough. Hasselbaink is an interesting one esp. with his links to Chelsea but appointing him would be a huge gamble.

I don't think we've a prayer of getting Warburton - he's a Londoner and is already being strongly linked with the jobs at QPR and Fulham.

For a couple of outsiders, how about Neil Redfearn or Keith Hill - neither ideal but perhaps each ticks enough boxes.

Last one into the ring who I'm 99.9% sure wouldn't be feasible due to Utd being in L1 and the associated wages but Allardyce looks as though he'll be available soon.

Looking at his record, Steve Evans would probably be the manager who would have the best shot at taking us up next season.

He won't get the job because he doesn't look right and he is apparently the only manager in football history to have been involved in dodgy dealings.

Adkins probably doesn't want to drop to the third division again
Holloway's time is up, he's a media man now
Lee Clark. Have you heard him trying to speak? And some question Clough's motivational skills, blimey...
Uwe Rosler took one team up and one team down.
Paul Lambert uninspiring
Darren Ferguson...track record of yoyoism...takes them up but takes them down again
Hasselbaink will wait for Leeds.
Phil Brown - if you don't like Clough's apparent criticism of players on radio/TV after games how do you feel about his leathering of an entire team on the pitch at half time? (I personally thought it was fucking ace but they shoved it right back up his arse therefter didn't they?) and if he can't get Southend out of the fourth could you expect him to get united out of the third?

Hey, Steve Bruce might be looking for a club to rescue soon....

...exactly...

You could list a load of negatives for Clough in the same way you have for the above.

Poyet?

Roberto Di Matteo, Brian McDermott, Gianfranco Zola? Or an outside bet, Gareth Ainsworth... massivly overachieved at Wycombe.

If it was me in charge though I would hang on until next season and bring a better option. Someone like Simon Grayson/ Mark Cooper/ Neil Redfearn/ another good championship manager... will be available soon.
