Are there enough quality candidates to warrant ditching Clough?

Looking at his record, Steve Evans would probably be the manager who would have the best shot at taking us up next season.

He won't get the job because he doesn't look right and he is apparently the only manager in football history to have been involved in dodgy dealings.
Don't forget our ethos too.

I am sure any manager from the lower leagues could have managed 5th with the war chest and size of squad that Clough had.

I think Nigel Clough should lose his job. But there does seem to be a shortage of quality alternatives who we could get to replace him. I've scratched my head and reckon that only the below names (scroll down) should be considered, and that's before you take into account whether they would do better than Clough AND be interested in us given our current league status.

For me, much comes down to whether we could attract Nigel Adkins. He disappointed at Reading but there's no denying the success he brought to Scunthorpe and Southampton, plus he has a proven track record of getting out of League One. Uwe Rosler should come into contention for me but he bombed at Wigan and doubts remain as to how much credit he should receive for Brentford's rise.

Paul Lambert did well at Norwich, seem to have an eye for lower league players but is a media relations disaster who ultimately had Villa playing some shocking football. He deserves a second chance, somewhere, but I'm not sure I'd like it to be us. Regardless, I think he'll land a Championship club.

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbank is fashionable but remains very inexperienced. Has he not just continued Gary Rowett's initial good work at Burton? But could he be a potential gem who is destined for bigger things? After all, he has achieved a league promotion on his CV which is more than Clough!

Ian Holloway and Darren Ferguson are far too risky as the squad requires tweaks rather than a massive player overhaul. Lee Clark would be a plausible, if uninspiring, choice. Did ok at Huddersfield but ultimately couldn't take them over the line. He struggled badly at Birmingham before inheriting the car crash that is Blackpool. I can't see a strong argument for replacing Clough with Clark then.

Phil Brown divides opinion but might be worth considering if Southend don't go up. Has the experience and now the lower league knowhow.

And for me, that's it. I don't see any Alex Neil's lurking around in Scotland who might be able to step up.

Thoughts?

Nigel Adkins
Ian Holloway
Lee Clark
Uwe Rosler
Paul Lambert
Darren Ferguson
Dean Smith
Robert Page
Jimmy Floyd Hasselbank
Phil Brown

Although Clough has made some fundamental mistakes this season , looking at the list , the best manager is the one we have already got . I am working on its better the devil you know . Next season to gain promotion , the devil will also be in the detail with risk mitigation.

He has this season took a risk on Wallace , Higdon , Coutts , Butler , Collins and made himself look incompetent and unproffessional. Yes things are changing at the lane under the Clough stewardship , but the major factor is the transformation / change , of Clough himself .

Could we also see , comings and goings in the back room staff , to freshen things up.

I'd take Evans every day of the week. Unlikely he'd come but he's a big personality and plays good football.

Poyet?

Roberto Di Matteo, Brian McDermott, Gianfranco Zola? Or an outside bet, Gareth Ainsworth... massivly overachieved at Wycombe.

If it was me in charge though I would hang on until next season and bring a better option. Someone like Simon Grayson/ Mark Cooper/ Neil Redfearn/ another good championship manager... will be available soon.

AINSWORTH?!?!

What about Sean O'Driscoll? Think he is managing England under 19's at minute so don't know if he would come back to club football or not but he would be my choice if we went down the replace Clough route

Amazed to see Lee Clark's name mentioned here, a man who bizarrely continues to be employed despite being underwhelming everywhere he goes. Precisely the type of manager we should absolutely avoid.

I don't think there's any manager on that list that is gamble-free. Adkins seems on a downward curve. Holloway is on a downward freefall. I like the idea of Warburton in theory, but he could turn out to be one of these managers that can't replicate his success at numerous other clubs he moves through.

plenty of candidates.............

no guarantee of getting the next one right, or the one after that.

Stay as we are for now, unless someone on here knows Dr Who ;)

What about Mark Robbins ? also the new Barnsley manager had an impact

Wharburton to QPR , Big Sam to Derby , Umbrella man to Newcastle , Lee Clarke ,job centre , Holloway , doctors. Clough stops at the lane.
Sorted.

What about a reference for poyet :D

I suggested him earlier in the thread. He is the most stubborn man ever, he wont change his tactics or style of play and he also speaks a lot of crap. However he won the league with Brighton and is clearly a good coach.

Would be a good option I think.

Surely if Doyle (and others?) are set to leave, i.e. not on the retained list, then that signals that Clough is staying, who else would be making those choices?

Don't sound any different to our Nigel :D

Clough a not going trust me we can't afford it, he also wouldn't have started releasing players if it wasn't going to be up to him.

I was thinking this earlier when the Doyle thread was started, Clough must have made the call that he was off and is already planning for next season. Surely we can't be risking him getting rid of players a new manager may potentially want to keep?

I don't want any manager who wants Doyle, so it's win win personally. We need to move on, and let us hope Clough has a plan afterall
