Had a read of the rumours section and got to wondering if fans of other clubs are quite so depressing and negative as ours.

Apparently, The Prince is off because KM won’t put as much money in as he wants to....or on the other hand the McCabes are not happy that the Prince has failed to invest as he promised.

Fleck is going to Burnley.

Brooks will be sold

And as a result of all that, Wilder is walking because the players will be sold against his wishes. And he’s got NO MONEY this window to strengthen the side.

Can’t wait for February, looks like we will have a new manager, a midfield of Bash and Lunny, and be in free fall towards the foot of the league. What really frustrates me is that the only news that seems to be “heard of” is the bad news.
We don’t seem to hear about good news, players arriving, how happy they are. Just doom and gloom. Says a lot about folk to me, think it might be worthwhile dodging this place for a month.

I have a friend who's a bit like that, only ever seems to see bad news. He'll be fucking delighted it's fucking snowing just to prove him right.

Every club has certain fans with personalities which cast doom and gloom on their whole lives not, just SUFC. We've all worked with them, socialised with them and have some in our families.

Some clubs have intense rivalries with another local club and opposition fans infiltrate their forums to spread disharmony.

Sometimes those two types of posters are hard to distinguish.

Thank goodness we are in relatively good shape as a club, the previous 6 years pre-Wilder were an awful period of depression on here and there seemed to be so many detractors, anarchists I called them, that you wondered just how many Wednesdayites there were on here.

Some people revel in adversity.

I hope those who complain about the lack of money spent in January (as they inevitably will) remember that we've just recently got 3 of our best/most promising players tied down to longer contracts. Whatever the outcome for those particular players it still counts as investment and not an insignificant one at that. Keeping Fleck/JOC et al is more important than signing new players, as we know they can do the business and sends a message of our intentions.

I think everyone is hoping to be proven wrong on all the transfer negativity. But a healthy dose of pessimism comes with the territory.

we do seem to be the opposite of Wednesday fans

they win one game at forest and they are storming up to 2nd and winning a cl place next season

we draw a game and relegation gets mentioned

even when we win we find scapegoats , first Lundstram gets hated because hes not Coutts
then Baldock gets he not the same since his injury , wont be though hes only just returned

unless we are winning 3 or 4 nil every game some find fault
and then when we win 3-0 the crowd gets slated for being quiet
now threads slagging off the board calling them wankers before the JTW opens
threads condemning their lack of investment , true they havent spent anything yet but no one has as its not open yet

what a set of whingebags we have

It’s a bizarre way to live though, forever in fear of something bad happening, and living with such low and negative expectations.

I know the recent history of the club as I supported them from the 80’s to now, so can appreciate the fact that in my time United often let me down, with the odd high to keep me going. But for a club of our size, in a similar predicament to other major cities with more than one pro club, are we really faring so much worse that we can justifiably have such a negative outlook of the club?

After all, nobody has ever come along with finances to burn, we are not competing on a level playing field and the nature of the game is that those with money buy the best players from clubs with less money. We have benefitted from this, as well as lost out. And one thing I can be certain of is that United will sell more players to clubs with more money than us.
I just don’t understand why that is such a shock and disgrace to folk. It’s gonna happen, so as long as the club operates in a way to ensure maximum value is achieved then we really can’t have a lot to complain about.

So I say this. Wilder knows this will happen. The club is operating efficiently and well on the playing side. If we sell, we replace and we continue to transform. I’m at least content that whatever happens will have been done with the clubs interests first and foremost

Apparently negative thinkers live longer. Here's a quote from scientist Frieder R.Lang: "Scientists found those with low expectations for a ‘satisfying future’ actually led healthier lives. A study into 40,000 people found that being ‘overly optimistic’ in predicting a better future was associated with a greater risk of death."

Yes, I too hate going on to a section of the forum designed for speculative bullshit and to my horror, discovering lots of speculative bullshit.

Speculative?
Or intentional?
More the latter for me, which is what interests me.

It’s not the random thoughts or ideas of someone, it appears to be more targeted and intentional to me.

Probably because they will say....I can make it across before that bus and save myself 20 seconds....or “the overtake is on”

All clubs have will have critics, that's fine as long as it based on actual knowledge and not guessing. Seen a few mention Southampton as a team to copy. Just think of the posts on here if we'd have sold as they have over the years.(reinvested how much?-half)
I do believe we're on right track regarding transfers, lower league upcoming rather than overpriced 'proven' championshiplayers.
Credit to Wilder for signing Lundstram, he and AK surely do know something about spotting talent. And most players start off in the lower leagues anyway , spotting the right ones early seems to be our force.
We can moan and worry about our board, but we can't do anything about that, but what we can always do is beeing the 12th man at the lane and away. We now play a system of entertainment and goals(only wolves scored more), it's about getting the right players to the system, that doesn't always need to be ' a star' rather the opposite.
Keep hold of what we've got in jtw and add a few . UTB

Fair enough, I was being a bit glib there.

The problem with having a rumours section is that it will attract morbid fantasists by its very nature, or those who want to post threads that they know will get tons of responses through manufactured controversy.

Personally, I almost never look on there because I expect it to be full of stupid shite.
On the other hand, I'm glad that such a section exists because it keeps it off the main board, allowing people to discuss real, tangible subjects.

I could have sworn that you put a thread on here recently saying how many points we needed to avoid relegation :)

Can’t agree. Moaning sods in life end up miserable.

I don’t we’re all that different but we do have a small proportion of fans who seem to moan about stuff before it’s happened or even invent stuff / fantasise about stuff to suit their agenda. Don’t get it myself. Waste of energy.

Totally agree! Sometimes it's hard to believe that posters on here actually support the same team such is the level of animosity. This is a great time to be a Blade, but many prefer to speculate that it will all be unravelled by our evil owners.

I do think, having lived outside of the city for half my life practically, that Sheffield is full of miserable sods generally.

(Puts tin hat on)

Every club will have their fair share of pessimistic fans but ours does seem to have a higher proportion.......and with justifiable reasons to be fair.

I think it is referred to as...."The Blades Way"....historically we have, (comparatively) sold players on the cheap, lied about players leaving, bent over and been shafted by the big boys....cheated out of a Premier League place....etc, etc......and we the fans are patted on the head as obedient little schoolboys as we file into and out of BDTBL in our loyal thousands week after week despite the latest broken promises from our latest in a long line of inept owners...

Throughout my nearly 40 years now of following United it has always been the same, (Currie, Sabella, Edwards, Deane, Fjortoft, Beattie, Walker, Naughton, Brown and many, many more....all sold) so excuse me for thinking that it is a case of "same shit different day".......look at Southend, hardly a club of any great wealth or stature yet they have dug their heels in regarding Ryan Leonard and it looks like we will have to fork out close to £1m for a player with only 6 months left on his contract....Charlton told Everton to piss off with 4 or 5 offers for Ademola Lookman until the price reached £10m, we let DCL leave 6 months prior for a tenth of the price......

OK, regarding Fleck & Brooks we have them tied up on long contracts but what the fuck difference will that make in reality....we will still bend over at the first reasonable offer received....United appear to be completely incapable of playing anything like "hard-ball" when it comes to transfers.....we have spent fuck-all this year in comparison to the monies received and saved by Wilder and we should be strong enough to make a stance on any of our players and make the interested clubs work hard to prize our players away....I said it on another thread that we are within touching distance of the Premier League....careful management now and investment in the right areas just may see us achieve back to back promotions, an amazing feat.....yet I think we all know deep down that the chances are we will end this transfer window having lost one or two of our prize players, on the cheap and replaced them with League 1/Championship reserve players.....the familiar excuses will be rolled out by the Board again as they expect Chris Wilder to carry on performing miracles.

Always best to prepare for the worst and be more grounded. We wouldn’t want to be like the deluded would we...still, not sure why you listed a midfield of Bash and Lunny in with yer negatives? ( new manager, free fall)

Bit depressing reading that.

Pessimism and pain has always been part of football, though. Unless you support one of the tiny minority of clubs that regularly win stuff, or that challenge to do so. Supporting a club is a form of belonging that is partly grounded in collective disappointment, and the bonding that comes with the experience of shared misery. (As well as the beauty and joy, and the adrenaline highs, of course). :)

What always perplexes me is the vitriolic twats who spend games screaming vile abuse at our own players, while calling Utd for everything and anything under the sun. Why bother ? Because they have a need to, and football tolerates it whereas other areas of life don't ? The social media slashers are on the same spectrum, I guess, and social media, like football, seems to find it acceptable.

Me, I just love going to "the match" with Jr, meeting up with people, the whole ritual of it. The division we play in is kind of irrelevant to me, though I'm mighty glad to be watching a better standard of football again.

That said ..... absolute gaaarrrrbage from the club. McCabe, Bog Roll Prince, Fleck, Brooks out ! Obvs.

To badly paraphrase David Niven’s view of Erroll Flynn,

“You always know where you stand with United, they always let you down”

:)

To be fair my post about Wilder being off and Brooks being sold was more sarcastic and a dig at the pig who posted it on Porktalk, who seems to know more about whats happening at the lane than Wilder or the McCabe's.

The Blades Way = Negativity?

Yeh I tend to agree as a generalisation.
That’s why last season was so fantastic.
Even the most negative of fans struggled to put a negative slant on anything, we were so good virtually every single match.
Also even during our recent poor run we’ve still generally been decent, so no complaints from me so far.
