Tonight:

We lost to a much better side. We couldn’t handle them going forward and despite some knee jerking on here we didn’t even play that badly. The opposition have top class attacking players and we were neither good enough or well set up enough to stop them. It is however ANOTHER defeat on a very bad run. Nothing went right but we didn’t give ourselves a chance to win that. Trying to go toe to toe with them was naive and Wilder gets the blame for tonight in my eyes, not the players. They tried.

Season:

Still very good. Wilder deserves credit, Knill deserves credit, players deserve credit. Here’s the negative though.....we have lost our way. We set ourselves a very high standard with our early season form but we haven’t maintained it. Here is my take on why:-

1.Coutts injury: the first thing that went wrong. His absence is still apparent. We’re not controlling games like we did.

2. Tactical approach: we have become too predictable. High press and overloading in the wide areas with wing backs and rushing centre backs. Many of the better opposition has learned to deal with it. We need to have a rethink.

3. Dropping players that did nothing wrong: Lundstram, Duffy, Sharp etc. all either playing very well at the time they were dropped or had proved their worth so many times in the past. Players that have remained in the side have had suffering form in their absence.

4. New signings: we are 3/4 games in and I’m not yet sold on what they bring. Holmes played very well tonight so that was a good start for him individually. I’ll accept that. Evans, Leonard and Wilson have done....ok....generally speaking but are they better than what we had. Maybe they are but I haven’t seen it yet.

Summary: I do think to some extent that we are reverting to where we should be in the league, based on budget, based on what we have in the squad and based on the level of our opposition but I do think on reflection that we have lost the plot and we could have been nudging that ceiling a little had we not tried to reinvent the wheel....and maybe our luck has deserted us slightly as well. I think we’ll return to some sort of form but we have hit the season high already.

Why the sodding inquest... we lost to the top 2 (unluckily to Villa), both teams paying more money on single players than our entire team and signing some of the best players in Europe.

I think we've done superb to get where we are. Had a couple of tough months but will come strong again.

Enjoy the ride.... we could be the pigs after all

I think I’m entitled a few observations after 3 wins in the last 14 league games.

We didn’t play our usual way against Wolves for some reason. The method wasn’t there. No urgency! If I was Mark Duffy I’d feel a tad miffed!

Yeah and to win one in 7 at BDTBL is hardly making Bramall Lane a fortress is it?

how about you make the same observations over the last 70??

Take your points but call me blindly optimistic, but I still think once Wilder finds his best attacking 2/3, and Evans & Fleck start to develop a relationship, we'll finish the season strongly.

Playing without last years captain & vice captain is hurting us, as we're really lacking in on field leadership.

ah i see you weren’t around for the leage one days? .. small mercies and all that

I won’t rise to that. I’ve been following them since I was four years old, with no breaks in between. I’ve clocked up the miles as well my friend. I’ve treaded Huish Park, Old Trafford and everything in between so you’re making the wrong assumption there.

My opening post was hardly knee jerk either. There always seem to be two outspoken camps on here. Blind optimism or outright misery. If you’re not in one of those, you simply get the agreeable nod in the form of a like from those who can be objective and not call for the manager’s head at the same time.

You’re on to something there and it’s the same track that I’ve been on. My version of it is....why did we change it in the first place? Sharp, Clarke and Duffy worked, did it not?

You’re touching on it a little bit with your last comment. Your train of thought is bang on the money mate but here’s a bold statement (people won’t like this) you’re holding off saying what you think in defence of our messiah manager, who has got something very wrong of late.

Doesn’t mean he hasn’t done a fantastic job. He’s just orchestrated our recent bad run. He can fix it, he just needs to see his mistake.

I'd stop well short of criticising Tufty, but don't forget it's his first season at this level too....

Certainly think we're now seeing that Coutts brought much more to the team than a fantastic footballer.
