Anyone but Pulis

The style discussion is increasingly tedious. If there was one style that worked then everyone would be playing it.

Pragmatism says that the style you play is the one that gets you success with the players available.

If you want to change the style then do it gradually by changing the squad gradually ( Stoke for example)?

By all means try to make it attractive to watch- and the most attractive football I have seen is winning football

And at this stage, when you're up to your arse in alligators, and clearing the swamp is the objective then do you really care if it's done neatly, or quickly?

We are in the 3rd division and Weir wanted us to play like Barcelona- pathetic and naive- you cut your cloth accordingly- welcome Mr Pulis

Sorry, but I don't agree.

Pulis got booted out the door at stoke, because their fans demanded a change in football style, despite the fact they were a stable premier league outfit. Blackwell had an amazing run of form as caretaker and did well as permanent manager, yet no one looks back at his time with fond memories. Good football and winnin football are extremely different things.

I also remember the vast majority of fans after warnock, Blackwell and Adams saying 'I don't care if it takes a few seasons, I'm sick of hoof ball'. Here we are, and yet those fans are now saying 'I don't care, I just want to start winning again, whatever it takes.' Well, I'm still willing to be patient, to see a blades team in the future play good and successful football, which will come in time. Stoke may e successful, but how many football fans really respect them for it?

Respect or trophies?

One often leads to the other. If you have respect within the game, you can attract better players and managers. Yes, in the short term, some teams have had success with kick and rush, but once that manager leaves, they all crumble and fail. Look at Swansea/Norwich/Southampton. They were all in our position at one time, but by sticking to a plan have created a sustainable and effective form of football and improving always. It seems tough to take now, but I absolutely believe we have to take the rough with the smooth and remain a footballing club and build on those foundations for longer term success.

You make it sound as though there are only the 2 distinct styles with nothing in between. How would you describe MUFC's style?
They are famed , and revered by some, for their swift breaks from the back, often with a long ball releasing the forwards whilst, at other times they play keep ball.

They are respected, if not loved, for their ability to WIN.

I am not saying SUFC should not aspire to playing 'better' football ( and that would have as many definitions as there are posters on here) but pragmatism dictates that ,in our position, winning is the prime aim.

Aspiration is fine but if you are starving I am sure you would devour a stale bun rather than wait in hope for a steak sandwich- and we are starving to death!

Lets look a bit closer at Swansea/Norwich/Southampton ?
Southampton are doing very well, Norwich on the other hand occupy a relegation spot on 7pts Swansea only avoid that on goal difference, makes you wonder if the pretty football will guarantee success.

The one common factor with Swansea, Norwich and Southampton is they all started the climb up the league with the appointment of brilliant, young managers. Rodgers, Lambert and Adkins.

The first two are now highly regarded premiership managers, both moved to bigger clubs. Adkins less so, but he is still a well respected manager and was doing a pretty good job when he was sacked.

We must get this appointment right, money no object, three managers in one year is pathetic.

The worst thing you can do in a, so called 'transitional period', is to implement a manager with completely opposing views to what we're trying to achieve. Lets stick to the plan, and hopefully get someone who has similar football ideologies, but a little more experience and know-how in getting results with it.

I don't want to go back to hoof, we need to stay on track.

We don't want a manager who has taken a team from this league to being a sustained PL side because we want to turn Neill Collins into a footballer and not a centre half? Great idea. See you at Morecombe.
