Another Samuels dig

I'm not one of these who thinks every man and their dog has an agenda against us but he does. There is no reason why he would have chosen us as one of his examples as a small club when Bassett has also managed Palace in the top flight. He also managed Leicester who at the time were very much a small club based on the arguments in this thread too. They were admin at the time they went up.

He just likes shoe horning us into his articles because he's doesn't like that we made a show of West Ham. I don't think United are bigger than West Ham. I don't think United are a big club. I do think Martin Samuel is incredibly bitter that the club he supports were eventually outed as cheats though.

This is all total madness - not just you Roygbiv. Bassett never managed Palace in the top flight as far as I'm aware,in which case Samuel is right not to mention then as a team Bassett had kept up, and as I said earlier Samuel called ALL clubs outside the elite 6 "small".

This thread is evidence of a mass paranoia. And you people call that fat scruffy fucker bitter?

Good and considered observations BB.

Overall the difference, however you choose to describe this, is down to money acquired from being part of the TV revolution that football has enjoyed. West Ham, although not what you'd describe as one of the biggest clubs in England, have had the good fortune to remain as a Prem club. They're not particularly successful, but they are entitled to many millions due to their Prem membership, and that will attract the likes of their current owners, or come to that any other predatory owner.

Finger's crossed, our day will come in the not too distant future. But for now, to reflect your own description, we're some way apart from the likes of the cockney toerags.
We’re you from itsinyourblood. :p

In context of his article, and the time period he is talking about, and for the reasons me and others have said yes we were a 'small' club in that league at that time. We came from Div 3 where crowds were 8/9k at the start of the season, got consecutive promotions and in our first season fans had chip in to buy Hodges who played a major part in us staying up. We were a 'bigger' club than the likes of chesterfield, Rotherham and about 60 odd other clubs at that time too. So yes, in the context of what he was talking about and the league we were in, we were a 'small' club. But really, does it actually matter?? Grab a beer and enjoy the match later

It's not about being "bigger", nor does fan-actions to raise money make a club small, unless you've bought into the money alone = big argument. However, you've answered my question, you think we were a small club at that time and, seeing as we are in a division lower, presumably think we are a small club now.
Does it actually matter? Well, enough for you to join the discussion. I'm not sure why you think you need to tell me to drink beer or enjoy the match. I will enjoy watching my "not small" team hopefully thrashing Birmingham.

I think it’s because he’s lumped United in with Wimbledon and Watford that’s got people upset. There’s no doubt he hates United but he is correct in saying that United were a small club at that time. However no smaller other than the top six to eight int the Premier League.

Being a big or a small club isn’t a fixed thing. Clubs grow big and clubs decline and are seen as smaller. History tells us this. He mentions Burnley as a small club, at one time they were giants of the game. Chelsea while never small are now seen as a giant. Preston, Huddersfield, giants at one time now seen as small. Man City weren’t the colossus they now are.

United are a bigger club now than when under Basset. My reasoning on this is purely down to fanbase. United have somehow managed to grow it despite everything while other clubs at the same time can no longer call on the support they once supposedly had. Look across the city.

West Ham are a bigger club at the moment due to the fortune of staying in the PL and all the associated benefits that go with it. Same goes for virtually all the clubs currently there if you just take into account the finanancial side.

But imo the only measure of a clubs size is the size of the fanbase, and on this alone United are a big club, bigger than the era Samuels refers to.

Not curious mate, I knew where you were from. Just me trying a bit of humour with your “cockney toerags” comment.

Aha......they got away with murder and wherever they were from, they should have had a 10-15 point deduction. So cockney toerags, norvern monkeys, I'm pretty relaxed about the stereotypes that exist. Bottom line is folks are folks, either good 'uns or wrong 'uns no matter where you're from.

Nobody has slagged United.

Just you that's paranoid.
So would you be if you were constantly being followed by the CIA and MI6, plus all my phone and messages are being sent directly to the Government GHQ. Also all my friends and family hate me.
