Another nice pre season profit.

Southall, I think you have misread my post either that or I wasn't too clear.

I'm not expect 4 or 5 more players, but Stewart was definitely brought in on that type of deal that fact that he was used was down to Blackwells choice. It would be stupid not to play someone if you think they were better than what we have. But he wasn't our target and wouldn't of been purchased if this hadn't been the deal on the table.

Thought i'd give this 24hrs before i came back, i expected some abuse and got it which i can take because everyone has there own opinion and this was mine. I just have concerns over the squad size and all i can see is £2m in sales and there wages saved with frees and loans coming in which is just wages paid out. The way i see it we will only be paying out a similar amount in new wages than we are saving in players that have left so that must surely leave £2m saved in transfer fee's but we are still 3 or 4 players short. The board can't expect to challenge for promotion with this squad size? I will still stand by what i said at the start of the transfer window we will not pay a transfer fee for a player this summer.

With what people are saying we need to sell these players to stay afloat so what happens at the end of this season? will we need to sell again? because surely ticket sales will be down? lots of questions which am sure many will have answers to.

The thing is, although we have not paid transfer fees, we have probably paid significant signing on fees for some of these free agents. They wont have just chosen us (over Premier options) just for the love of the Blades and those amounts will soon add up.

Couldn't help noticing David P's comment on the size of the Man U squad on the Owen to Bristol City thread. There's a team who haven't spent all their profit from last pre-season and wont get near to doing so this Summer.

Yes, we've heard all that before, though it's always worrying when anyone uses the phrase 'divine right' when nobody's ever suggested any such thing.
What we've never had an answer to is why we're £50m in debt despite having a £20m bonus that any other club would have feinted over.
As you point out, it was accounted for last year to give a slightly different impression to the outcome of 08/09.
Nobody as far as I can tell is suggesting we go out and spend big money on players.
But that's different from remaining thoroughly pissed off with the shocking financial management of the club that has got us to this position in the first place.
That and the empty promises of getting our squad together before the pre-season tour, Billy Sharp coming back, no reliance on loanings etc, etc.

Len - taking your points in turn

I use the phrase "divine right" as reading threads on here and Blades-Mad I hear people criticising McCabe for looking to recover some of his significant investment and questioning why he should do it. It was a general comment, not directed at anyone in particular, but reflective of some people's train of thought. McCabe is wealthy, but a lot of that wealth is on paper and not realised. I cannot imagine investing a similar proportion of my (limited) wealth in the Blades with no return.

In terms of why we are so far in debt, look at the accounts each year, ask your questions at the AGM! :D

There doesn't seem to be anything to hide. There was a bit of PR spin in the presentation of the results in the media, highlighting the profit, but you only needed to skim the surface to see how this had been uplifted.

There has been some "mismanagement" as you call it, but only by showing some of the (OK misguided) ambition some people expect the club to show each year, regardless of the financial situation. The title of this thread relates to pre-season profit and seemingly not spending the money we have had in and I haven't criticised the notion of spending big on players, more the notion that money in should = money to spend.

We are where we are financially and having met Trevor Birch and seen his previous capability I have faith he will sort it out, it just wont be an immediate fix.

How many manages have completed their squad as yet? How many managers are on the radio, in the papers saying they still need 3/4 players? Many. The statement about signing loan players related to short term loans , which should be cover for injuries, not a succession of signings to cover a long term need. If the next two signings are season long loans what is the problem? If they have the quality and the deal is financially good, so what? As for Billy coming back, I know how positive and optimistic you are Len - you didn't fall for that line....did you?

I am willing to bet you won't find one single post made on this board in the last 12 months that expresses this view.

I think that was a back handed compliment. Or pehaps it was a further dig at me and I misunderstood.

Just a straight compliment mate - not even back-handed. As the months have gone by I find myself evermore frustrated be many of the comments on here - and although I rarely share your point of view, you do make your points well - unlike the majority of posts that come from "your" school of thought.

I'm happy to defend my posts - though less happy when they are dismissed out of hand by one-line knee jerk posts which in themselves don't support any point - simply put down my (and others) more positive views.

And as Marshy says - Brownie a "clapper" - you've gotta be having a laugh!! Which in itself shows just how skewed from the centre the debate has become.

Take no notice of them mate - nothing wrong with being flexible enough in opinion to change it as circumstances change also.

Ok, thanks.

This whole 'clapper' and 'knocker' stuff is nonsense in my view. Brownie is a SUFC fan and a poster. I'll approach his posts and consider his view the same as anyone else's. The 'sling you hook you clapper' was a throw away comment and more of a come back to being named in the 'sunshine band'. I can't speak for the rest of the 'sunshine band', nut it saddens me a little that people get put off by their posts. My advice is simply ignore it, don't get upset by or put off by or it or debate it.

The football season is back!! Oh how i love it. Not been on here for a while and just read a few posts..... looks to me like Lenny has finally done it and turned this site into a pseudo bladesunited forum. Yep, the camps are now firmly in place - 'clappers' and 'knockers' with Lenny boy at the top of the tree. Cant believe you all fell for it - the guy will be sat with the cleanex out reading this topic. The front man of the 'Sunshine Band' - great stuff lol.

Just a thought.........dont you guys have a few months off in the summer? - you know leave the keyboard alone.... get a bit of sun.... eat tapas.... drink mucho falling down juice etc. Try it and forget about the Blades for a bit - honest its good fun!

Nowt will change as far as United are concerned. Blades are Blades are Blades are Blades. We have been more or less exactly the same for the 40 odd years ive been treading the sacred kop steps. Nothing will stop me cheering them on, but i must admit i dont tend to get as wound up as the grey hairs are now really starting to take over the old heed.

Come on you red and white wizzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzards.

being a cynic of the highest order:p, i have a sneaking suspicion that the pompey situation could be the tip of an enormous iceberg.. if one domino topples.. a precedent will be set and a whole bunch could follow.. i often wonder if Kev Mac has a cunning masterplan to stay solvent(ish) and sit in mid table.. the way things are going they'll have to 'invite' us to the premiership because they will have run out of teams:cool:
why do i think that.. umm .. because that is what i'd do.. heh:fishbowl:
I think that comment may be very near the truth, I think the peeps at BDTBL are playing a longer game.
