Anel

I honestly believe he’s the most overrated player we’ve ever had he has way more poor games than good. If we have the chance to cash in I would and if we end up with a solid signing like Mepham in his place even better

Agree with everything you said, except that Mepham would still be a downgrade even on Anels recent performances.

Mepham is bang average at best.

It's probably fair to say that he's "at least" a top end Championship CB.

Would have been gutted to lose Anel in summer. Now it would seem sensible to sell if we can make a sizeable profit. And he's put in some poor performances this season, which I was (perhaps generously) putting down to being a new Dad, lack of sleep and focus etc.

Can't see what all the fuss is with him, defensively he's all over the place , easily gets shoved off the ball, agree when he comes forward looks the part. Loses concentration and then fails to pick up his man constantly. Don't like this ' stepping stone' issue as well, good look with his next move, bottom line is he's not as good as he thinks he his 👍

I like Anel's particular skill of scoring goals when none of our other defenders contribute.

If he's going, someone who does that but is a bit physically stronger please. Bear in mind, this will be at Champ level.

Anel's main strength and the reason he shone so much last season is his marauding forward to join attacks. This season we've spent the vast majority of the time sitting deep without the ball, so he's not had licence to do that. A more attacking team would get a lot more out of him, as we did last season.

But one of his biggest weaknesses is that he gets too tight to his man and subsequently he gets turned too easily. He's always getting booked because he's then trying to pull his man back or he ends up tripping them.

Playing in a more attacking team won't remove this as a weakness. He'd still have to do some defending.

Personally, I've always thought it would be interesting to see him playing in some sort of midfield role.

What made him good last season was the opportunity for him to make those forward runs as we had much more of the ball. This season that opportunity hasn't been there and we've been pegged back much more, which in turn has shown up some of his defensive frailties. I don't think he's a bad player, just not an out and out defender. Probably not quite strong enough for the PL either.

Call me mad, but I'd like to see him play as a striker. He's an excellent finisher, good in the air, quick and his movement is good. It would be like a throwback to the early 1990s when centre halves were regularly converted into strikers to great effect - Dion Dublin, Chris Sutton, Paul Warhurst etc.

All we need now is the Premier League to revert to the early 90's and it might actually work!

You're mad mate

Don’t mind making profit off him. Works for all party’s if we reinvest the money. Good championship defender but way too lightweight for premier league. Signed as a right sided CB in a 3 but not good enough if we’re going as a 4 at the back.

I think it was the other way round pal, strikers converted to centre halves. Saying that, maybe Ollie McB could do a job in a back 3?

I’m not sure this strategy of selling all off our best players is working all that well this season.
Hi Stegosaurus here,

Luckily it's only Anel we're hopefully flogging. Very overrated player. Part of our comedy duo this season with Egan.

It speaks volumes when he's been outshone by Robinson who is Championship level plodder.

Paul Warhurst - Started out as a defender, converted to emergency striker in an injury crisis, then went back to defence, and later on midfield
Dion Dublin - Striker - Centre Back - Striker -> Centre Back - Striker
Sutton - Centre Back -> Striker -> Midfielder

Good shout tbh

Plenty being a bit harsh on him here. His first few months before he got ill he was outstanding, not just marauding forward but putting in those proper crunching challenges, decent in the air and sweeping up danger.

When he returned he looked physically weaker (although he's always looked skinny as owt) but looked like he'd lost a yard of pace and suddenly started all the daft shirtpulling fouls where he'd outpaced everyone before.

He looked superb against Spurs and City last season but hasn't really got back near to where he was. If those first few months are the real him, he'll be worth a shitload one day. If this version's him, he won't.

Against Stuttgart he was one (amongst plenty) with his head down looking like he couldn't believe what was going on, but a bit bloody hard to guess whether he's sulking, still physically suffering or just off form- definitely nowhere near where he was though.

Good post

The berge situation was clearly stated by PA... He wasn't signing and wanted to be a free agent, so we pushed a transfer to recover value for the club..

Ndyie was signing a new deal, but Marsaille gave an ultimatum and he did a u turn at the last minute.

The real problem is we dont pay the going rate, we try to negotiate at the back end of the season before they enter thier last year but the negotiations drag on, there's only one reason why they drag on, mcburnie has had a new offer on the table since the end of last season, he possibly may be sold at the end of the window if PA sticks to his process..

Anel (who this thread is about) hasn't been happy since illiman left, he must have seen that as a clear lack of ambition from the club, and they were bezzy mates, in case u didn't know.
Tezza agreed, however one thing not mentioned which I think may have had a big negative affect on his form is tje spat he had with the Bosnian FA after 'failing to turn up for International games". They suspended him until further notice and I don't think he's played for them again.

My experience of Balkans is that they are all seriously proud of their heritage and love their countries. I'm sure the negative publicity around this will have affected both Anel and his family.

Anel looked fantastic to begin with but looks well out of his depth, like much of the team this season. A loss, but not huge, and if it enables us to keep our better plays for an assault on the Championship next season then sell him to the highest bidder.

Wow. Napoli are the club linked.

Italian clubs always seem a bit skinny but let’s see.

Spent €107m. Recouped €100m

Not afraid to splash a bit of cash.

But let’s see. I remember all the lowball Berge offers.

Safe to say that agent, player and family will be keen on the move!
