Anel

4th goal summed him up. Half hearted when it came to doing the basics asked of a defender.

Sadly for us his selling value is dropping by the game. We’ll be lucky to get 10million max for him at the moment.

Sadly, means he’s playing for us next season?
A level where we know he’s capable of being one of the leagues top defenders. Raising his profile and value.
I’ll take that.

he wont be playing for us next season could well be yet another one of our players who ends up at leeds

Surely there’ll be money to spend if 2 or 3 leave that’s only way anyway because the takeover thing looks a load of tosh

Bladeys, it's happening again. 😕

This is Hecky, in the cusp of promotion to the Premier League but with keys players not yet committing to the club, all over again...

Personally, I think it's quite a sensible attitude to adopt. Last thing we need are players pre-occupied with contract distractions.

I don't think it's very helpful conducting these interviews before the season's finished.
We've heard from Hamer courting Feyernood and now our own media are chasing a clickbait headline with Anel (who they know wanted to leave in the past).

As for Anel, I'm comfortable either way.
The club needs to look after it's own interests and not lose him on a free. Per above, he isn't irreplaceable and we need a defensive rebuild regardless of his future.

They’re just generic, media coached answers same as whenever any players and managers get asked these questions.

Focusing on the next game, this season, let’s see what happens, out of my hands blah blah blah

I rate Anel for the Championship, he’s a very good player for the level, if we manage to go up he’s one of many that need improving upon if we want to stand a chance of staying in the Prem at all. This is just painting a picture of how many players we need and how hard it’s going to be because Anel is one of our best players currently.

I don't have a problem with what he is saying here to be honest. We don't yet know where we will be next season, but there will be people at the club planning for both scenarios and this will include looking at players close to the end of contracts.

It's best for the players themselves to worry about the next 8 games. It's in everyone's interests to go up and that's all that matters at the moment.

Last season was a bit of a reality check for him. I think currently the best he can hope for is a club like Fulham showing interest in him.
In the end it'll all depend on the level of ambition the club is willing to show. If players like Anel and Hamer feel this team could be good enough to actually compete in the Premier League, I think they'll be willing to commit to another contract.

I hate to say this (and I a putting my tin hat on) but if we get promoted Anel amongst a shed load more of our players are going to have to leave with our thanks if we intend to make a go of staying up. Of the current crop who we own only cooper, hammer, arblaster, peck and cambell have any chance of making it in the big time, the rest are not even bench warmers, the quality who comes of the bench in the premier make the rest, well!!!

That stat in the Star article about him only being the 7th player from outside the UK and Ireland ever to play 100 games for us is mind boggling. You can see where the Brexit Blades stuff comes from

Anel is a right footed centre half.

We picked him and Souttar together but both are right footed.

Even now, and without much thinking, there’s a simple equation that sees us sell Anel and sign Rob Holding and Souttar for not much more than we get for Anel.

You have the dominance of Souttar and the PL experience of Holding then as options. Robinson will likely be here and as a left sided centre back and ideally no more than back up and you go out and sign a better left sided centre back.

Now we aren’t playing overlapping centre halves, some of his positives are less transparent. As an out and out defender, discounting his ability to bring the ball out of defence, there are options.

Whilst I’d rather we not be forced to move him on, it’s clear there are possibilities. Being right footed also makes the options more readily available.

Souttar is the only one I would consider bringing in and that would be only if no effects from major injury (unlikely) and even then as rotation at best.

How clinical you are up top may decide who wins the Prem... but staying up is all about having a very good resolute defence which is tough to break down.

Only Cooper and perhaps Burrows (even that's a question mark) would be selectable for the task of staying in the Prem.

Every other position in our backline needs MAJOR upgrades.

I'd be happy keeping with our current strike force (Campbell, Moore, Cannon) if it meant we exclusively focused on our back line.

Is this the same Souttar that Leicester decided was not good enough for the Premiership, a side that is also getting relegated from the Premiership. 🤔
That's also without even taking his injury into account.

I like Souttar but feel we would need better if we did make it to the Premiership, also Leicester might not want to sell after his contribution in the Championship with us this season.

Dominance is not as important in the Premiership as pace and athleticism and being comfortable with the ball.
Personally I would keep Anel if he wants to stay and sign a new center half to play alongside him with the above attributes.
I actually think Anel would be ok in the Premiership with more able defenders and keeper around him, we already have a better keeper than last time.
This is all dependent on us going up of course, and I guess also how much money our new owners have.

How did Souttar do against pacey forwards that played well on the floor? I can't really remember that happening against us with him. Totally different game in the prem with no possession where we will be chasing IMO.
