We had four keepers on our books at the same time:

Kelly: Ireland international
Goram: Scotland international
Rees: Just called up into Wales squad
Tracey: England B squad (and should have been full international)

Not a bad roster!
Unless I'm mistaken Tracey was on the verge of a full Ireland callup under Jack Charlton.

Did I dream that at one stage Man United were rumoured to be about to put in a 750k bid for Tracey. Saying that in one newspaper or another every player is rumoured with everything !

There was a point when Manure were going through keepers like Tango goes through a Travelodge buffet, they even had Chris Turner at one point (he let in 7 against Hartlepool in a preseason friendly!).

It was definitely talked about at the time. I think there were links with one of his grandparents.

Either way, it was a travesty that Chris Woods was deemed to be a better keeper than Tracey. Not in a million years!

Top keeper in his day. Was backup for the Alan Kelly/Simon Tracey show. Uniquely the only player to have played both cricket and football for Scotland.
Fantastic keeper for Rangers. The difference often when they beat Celtic, leading to the wonderful Tommy Burns lamenting how Andy Goram might feature on his gravestone.

Jack Charlton wanted him but I think Tracey found out that his grandparents werent born in Ireland so he wasnt qualified enough to play for Ireland

Diagnosed with cancer:

Have very little recollection of his time at the Lane but by all accounts a top player and a top bloke too :(

Not sure about the ‘top bloke’ but (allegedly) into the (sigh) sectarian shite (whilst?) in Glasgow.
Irrespective it’s still grim & lent a tad more poignancy by the ‘demise’ of Oldham Athletic where he was (rightly) revered for his goalkeeping abilities

Aye but made our goals agin Woods all the sweeter - including I seem to recall 1 through the legs ?

That you can joke about cancer
I am a 30 plus year survivor of cancer, my parents & both paternal & maternal grandparents died from various forms of it, my sister is a survivor of it & have many family members who are either victims or survivors of it, but I laugh at cancer jokes because as a survivor I am literally laughing at it. It is a fucker & brings proper heartache, but every time I hear a joke about it I laugh (unless it's a crap joke), because every day I live is a day nearer a cure, & when that happens we will all laugh our heads off at it.

Agree, joking about it kept my spirits up throughout my treatment and has kept it off my mind ever since.

Memory likely to be playing tricks but didn't he get put on standby for the England squad at one point but got injured ?

It was a joke about his schizophrenia, not his cancer.
Off topic but worth clarifying and not to be joked about. Most people misunderstand and get Schizophrenia mixed up with Dissociative personality disorder (Dissociative identity disorder used to be called 'multiple personality disorder). If you have dissociative identity disorder you will experience severe changes in your identity. Different aspects (states) of your identity may be in control of your behaviour and thoughts at different times.is what most people think of when it’s mentioned. Schizophrenia is a serious mental disorder in which people interpret reality abnormally. Schizophrenia may result in some combination of hallucinations, delusions, and extremely disordered thinking and behavior that impairs daily functioning, and can be disabling. People with schizophrenia require lifelong treatment.

Aside, the main point is to wish Andy and his family well and let them know we are thinking of them.

Why can't we joke about dogs?

This is correct. Graham Taylor put him on a stand by in March 1992 but Tracey had to pull out after suffering a shoulder injury at Chelsea. Then we signed Mel Rees just before the transfer deadline

Get well soon fella, all the best, praying for a swift recovery.

Always remember a few Scottish lads sat near us for one game at The Lane when Goram was playing for us. They were Rangers fans and had come all the way from Glasgow just to support Andy.

I wish him all the best with his battle
