And it's man of the match

Firstly, we don’t know that no player identifies as a woman. Across 92 teams (and more if we count non-league), each with a squad of ~25, it’s quite possible that at least one person might not identify as a man. They might feel unable to say anything about ‘MOTM’, especially if they see the type of response seen on this thread.

Second, if someone born as a man identifies as a woman later in life, they can’t just choose to play for a women’s team. They wouldn’t qualify. I’m aware that some people will say “That’s the point”, but it isn’t: the point is that they don’t want to be called a ‘man’ but should still be able to play football.

Thirdly, it’s not just identifying as a woman. Some people don’t want to identify as a man or a woman. This is their choice and doesn’t really affect other people. You don’t necessarily need to understand why they feel like that, but it’s maybe a good idea to accept that some people have different thoughts and emotions to you.

Nobody is making you say ‘person of the match’ or ‘person on’. Some other people have chosen to use that phrase to be more inclusive, and that’s fine. Personally, I’ll keep saying ‘man on’ when I’m playing, and I’ll ask my dad who his man of the match was after a United game. But I’m not going to worry if someone else chooses to say ‘person of the match’, especially if it does help someone somewhere feel more included.

Get your point, and as I said I genuinely don’t care what someone wants to identify as

However until it happens what’s the point in changing something

Like me going to a Ferrari dealer and asking for a weekend test drive, on the basis I play lottery - I think he would politely wish me luck and ask me to return when I have the “problem” of several mill burning a hole

playing “men’s”* football but don’t necessarily identify as a man (they might be gender fluid, for example).
Then either “they” shouldn’t be playing men’s football or it should be changed to a mixed team sport.

If Bolt had identified as a woman should he have been allowed to compete in the women’s 100m?

Everyone needs to feckin grow up on this subject and stop pampering to celebrity driven whims

The idea is that, by not doing anything, it makes it less likely that a player not identifying as a man will feel comfortable making that position public. By proactively being a bit more inclusive (by changing one word), it might make people more able to be themselves.

A better analogy than your car dealer example is wheelchair access in buildings. If an employer says “I’ll wait until we have a member of staff in a wheelchair before we bother installing ramps”, then this can lead to unintended discrimination against people in wheelchairs. If two people got interviewed and the one in a wheelchair was slightly better, the employer might decide that it’s not worth it because the cost of adapting doorways etc would offset the slight gain in skills. However, by encouraging all buildings to have wheelchair access, most employers proactively do that, meaning that it isn’t a consideration when comparing two candidates for a job.

Being proactive about these things generally leads to a more positive change in society, despite the resistance from some people amid accusations of ‘woke’, ‘madness’ etc.

Waited years before posting and
it's all been for waffle ☹️
Hi, my first post was calling out a very good post by a fellow blade about something I feel passionate about, then someone tried to ask me a completely irrelevant question about WSL so I gave an irrelevant answer.

Sorry if it came across as confusing I will go back to never posting this was clearly a mistake.

Thanks sorry, I spent many years not posting even lurked since the days of bladesmad and paddy’s fantastic pics and early memes.

I’m not a big post in public guy, riddled with anxiety and sometimes take things to heart I work on it daily but they are my demons not for others to worry about.

I probably picked the wrong post to pipe up on 😂

Use this platform to support your anxiety mate, just remember that most of the stuff on here is banter between fellow Blades, gallows humour, if we were in the trenches we’d be on the same side

Don’t take it to heart, if someone disagrees with you Happy clapper or pig can usual be used😂

Throw shit out there, some will be welcomed, some not, but your entitled to your opinion, don’t let anyone put you off been able to voice that

Good luck with your demons Peco, all Blades together mate

This is such a good, clear answer. If a blades player did not identify as a man (gender fluid etc) and them getting player of the match instead of man of the match made a difference to them surely this is only a positive.

Especially when considering that something as low effort as changing an awards name is all that is required.

I do not understand how anyone could be angry about trying to make something we love more inclusive for all.
I don't understand how calling it player of the match is making it more inclusive when there's not been any change in inclusivity. Its still 11 men vs 11 men. You could argue its 11 players. But then it's human being of the game as well. But hey, let's be inclusive.

Hi Ainsley, my guess would be it’s on the basis that there might be people playing the game who don’t identify as a man. I haven’t heard of anyone saying that but who are we to just assume the person who has played the best likes to be known as man?

I don’t need to understand it as it doesn’t directly impact me but what harm are we doing by making the change?

But not one player does - so in effect what’s been discovered here is a solution to a problem that doesn’t exist

Also, if a male player identifies as a woman, surely part of this would be to represent a women’s team, or visa versa

I genuinely don’t care what people want to identify as, but we do seem to be finding stuff that isn’t a problem to deal with.
They wouldn't be allowed to play in a women's team.
And we have no idea if any of the players in men's competitions identifies as a woman. they would probably keep that quiet as they'd end up with a lot of abuse.
Question might be analysed as who is kicking up a fuss. I'm not. Couldn't care. I'm only putting forward a position
If I knew how to make a poll I'd ask if Blackburn's first as a penalty

a) who gives a merry Xmas
b) who gives a merry Xmas

Which way is Wembley?

1. You have no idea what woke means
2. You're the angriest person on here
3. Stop randomly throwing around words you read in your angry right-wing paper.

I’m not angry at all just find it all very silly.

No 3 sums why I think wolk folk are weird.

I can help then. World football is split into the men's game and the women's game. In England the women's top level game is WSL , women's super League.
Football isn't gender neutral at that level. There is no need for a gender neutral named award in a gender specific game.
The game isn't split by gender, it's split by sex.

If you are gender neutral, you could play mens football. Of all the gender neutral people that will win this award in the next 100 years, only a fraction will care.

Very minimal gains, but no loss to anyone.

I can't believe so many men are so fragile that they get so upset about saying 'player of the match' as opposed to 'man of the match'.

Given it's 'player of the year' and 'young player or the year' it makes sense that it's 'player of the match'.

It's bizarre, sad and slightly funny the way they melt so readily over something as trivial as a word. You could even say they're a bit like... snow flakes?

Some people thrive on being angry.

Probably because these sorts of issues don't effect you.

I find women moaning about periods and the menopause silly, because I've got no clue what it's like and I never will. I've never cared enough to read up on it.

However, because of all that, I shut my gob about it because I know fuck all. Hearing people whinge about topics they've never thought about critically is dull.

If you don't understand, don't care enough to listen to people that do, AND it doesn't effect you, why pipe up?

What is ridiculous is taking any sort of offence that a term has been changed to be more inclusive.

What harm does it do to your life that it is now ‘player of the match’ other than it didn’t used to be like that?
Really?

It’s fucking pathetic, and accepting such shit contributes to the never ending tide of patheticness.

It’s men’s football. And it’s man of the match.

What if one of those men winning the award identifies as a man? Shouldn’t he have the right as well that his gender is not airbrushed?

This does seem to be a fuss created for the sake of it by renaming man with player.

Has anyone ever complained about it being referred to as man of the match in any men’s competition where a winner has identified as anything other than a man?

I don’t believe that there is a precedent within English football for women or other genders to play in the men’s professional game. So I don’t understand how this could even remotely become an issue

The bigger issue could be that nobody apart from men identifying as men can plan in men’s competitions
He would probably care as little as I do. I'd have thought men identifying as women could still play in the men's game, but as I commented before, they probably keep it quiet because of the likely abuse.

As we, as a society, become more open to other people's choices, somebody will be brave enough to speak out at some point. When they do, I'd imagine most will shrug and say fair play. Live your life. Some won't.
