Did anybody see this advertised on the big screen at The Lane last Saturday ?

Now i'm all in favour of generating money for the club but fuckin hell, Paul Merson?? Is it gonna be held in the tap room of the Royal Standard?

Decent footballer I accept, but no connection whatoever with SUFC and if his autobiography is anything to go by, it's just another story of good young player, signed by a big club, starts to earn big money and develops an ego to match his salary and perks.

Plays for England, wins a shitload of honours while pissed, drops team mate during Wembley celebrations, starts shagging around, loses wife, job and everything else.

Hits rock bottom playing for Portsmouth and managing Walsall, redemption arrives in the shape of Sky Sports Soccer Saturday.

Personally, i'd rather go to an event like this featuring Charlie Nicholas. At least he was a good looking lad, a great player and hats off to the bloke, he went through all of the Page 3 girls, the lucky bastard.

I'm not all that comfortable with the club doing events with people like this, I assume it's from the commercial arm :)

The Legends nights are great, but figures famous for their careers with other teams i'm not so sure.

I have however been on a couple of evenings with Merse and they are enjoyable, some good stories, but he has his story and sticks to it fairly steadily... If you've seen him before, I wouldn't bother.

It's a good marketing ploy. Get everyone out on a sesh with Merse, send somebody around flogging season tickets like them people who come around selling plastic roses when you're on a night out and boom. Nobody says no to buying stuff when they've had a few.

And then sign Merse up on loan for the rest of the season as part of Danny's strengthening policy? ;)

The might With" events is they're always on a Thursday night. How about putting the odd one on a Friday night? Thursday is a no-no for me as I usually have a very early start on Fridays.

we ve got one coming up with Ray parlour.
Ray Parlour is excellent, and well worth seeing. He doesn't spout on about himself, just tells some great anecdotes about the players he has played with down the years, including Dean Windass which is pretty good! Better than most I have seen.

I emailed John Garrett to ask why these events couldn't be held on a Friday night rather than a Thursday night and his reply was quick in coming back, even though he was on his way back from Stevenage. Basically it's down to the speaker concerned when they want to come, and the staff at the Lane don't fancy doing a Friday night as they've got to start at eight in the morning on match Saturdays so don't want a late night. Well, I start at five on a Friday morning, so Thursdays are no use for me.

Still, this Merson thing is at a nice, convenient time according to the email from the club I got.

Friday lunchtime. Genius. What next, A Breakfast With Norman Whiteside?

Presumably it's on a Friday lunchtime so that Merson will still be relatively coherent.

Once upon a time an evening with Paul Merson probably would have been a hoot but who just wants to sit watching some ugly twat drink lemonade?
