Im just listening to the Brentford v Fulham play-off final and the commentator has just said

“The omens aren’t good for Brentford because no team that traditionally plays in red and white striped shirts with black shirts has ever won the play-offs”.

Sheffeld United 8 attempts
Brentford 8 attempts
Lincoln think 5 attempts
Sunderland 2 playoffs
Exeter 2 attempts
Southampton 1 attempt

So thats a total of 26 attempts to win the play-offs and amazingly it‘s been failure everytime.
Is there a curse on red and white stripes with black shorts?

all over 2-0 Fulham
Ollie,i know you're disappointed after last might, but do you fancy playing for the Blades?

That's an incredible stat if true. Have Stoke never won them?

Edit. Oh year, just realised this stat is for black shorts too. Still, an incredible stat

Stoke did win one...against Brentford in 2002

Haven't Sunderland missed out in the play offs 3 times, lost to Swindon in 90 (though ultimately went up by default), Charlton in 98 and the season before last in League 1 play offs?

Brentford joining us and Reading on a record four final defeats, but now taking the lead as the most unsuccessful play-off team ever - nine attempts out of nine ending in no promotion, compared with our eight from eight.

Poor sods.

At least they've scored in a final.

No. It's pure coincidence. But it's the kind of thing football fans love to lap up and turn into fact.

The Blades have indeed celebrated play-off success - we were the first team in the world (along with Darwen) to get promoted after winning a play-off. 1892/93 we finished runners-up in the first season of the old second division & beat Accrington 1-0 in a 'test match' which was effectively a neutral ground play-off. Granted our play-off record since has been pretty abysmal!

They were called Test matches.

Would you count it as a play off then? I've always prided myself on our abysmal record, but what the club elders say goes.
Sort of but it wasnt 4 teams fighting for one promotion place. It was bottom 2 of first division v top 2 of second division for 2 places.

Poor sods.

Is that on your honours board?

We got relegated through the play offs too, is that counted in there?
