Im struggling to understand why we don’t have significant money to invest not just for cover this season but to invest in the team now and for next season.

So, unless the wheels come off spectacularly we gain 120m this season plus 125m next plus c. 100m worst case should we be relegated next season, which we should if we invest

So that’s guaranteed revenues of £350m over the why wouldn’t we now invest?

if we invest now in improving the starting 11 players rather than squad/cover, then surely the positives are that they settle in to the squad and have a full pre-season with us and we hit August like a bull in a China shop, rather than buying late July and needing several months to get up to speed

This window is different, prices greatly inflated.

I dont think you can look into potential revenues and then say we have hundreds of millions to spend. Our wage structure for one looks like it's about to burst.

I'm pretty sure weve spent this seasons 120m in some form or another, 50mill in the summer, plus wages, running costs. I dont think there would be a significant amount left from that 120m.

It would be suicide to spend next seasons money in january, inflated prices and bad value. Reassess in the summer.

Simple January transfer window is usually panic buy stuff and the ownership dispute is not settled

This season is different, prize money is dependent upon league position. You only get roughly £30-£40 Mill up front then a million per league game on tv after, then the rest comes at the end of the season dependant on where we finish

Read the first line of the OP. Got bored.

If we assume that we will remain in the Prem then a rough estimate may be that we make £100m this season. From that, we've already spent £40m on transfers fees this summer. Then, Princey will have to cough up about £50m to buy the assets from Uncle Kev. That's £90m gone before we consider the wage bill and other running costs. There's not a lot of room for manoeuvre really. Of course we can borrow against that, but I think, realistically, we are looking at minimal spend on new players in Jan and then possibly another £50m-£60m investment in summer.

I'm o.k. with that tbh. I think the current squad is capable of finishing this season in the top half of the table and providing we keep our main players and add a bit of quality to the squad, 3 or 4 signings in summer, we should be able to continue surprising folks with how good we are!

I don’t mind us being sensible, Wilder obviously happy as he’s signed a new contract and plus surely this post is 10/11 days premature.

Just want to be the first pedantic prick to point out that you missed out the 't' in 'thoughts' :shark:

Would you pay £60 for a packet of crisps just because you were a bit peckish?

Very slow market this January too. Add to the the money going out of the club as the Prince needs to buy the ground etc...

A bit disappointing though that your owner doesnt have a lot of money!

Quick Maths on this one,
Transfers - £40 Million
Wages - £8 to 21 Million per year*
Pure footballing costs will be around 60 Million.

* (Wages with an average wage of £8000 per week between a squad of 20 players (£8.3 Mill) or if we wanted to go really wild and say average of £16000 for 25 man squad (£21 Million)

If we've paid out much more than that i'd be surprised and if the running costs are £60 million i'd ask where the moneys gone...

I haven't had chance to look at the accounts to see what previous wage bills and running costs are, but can't see it being 80 Million on top of the recruitment cost.

In addition, we're also not going to pay the full transfer fees up front, the fees will be paid over a period of 2-4 years.

As for the original question from gaffablade You don't spend your annual salary on 1st January and neither do football clubs. Yes they can spend against "future earnings" (See SWFC 10 year season ticket sales), but the first payment from the premier league i think came on 1st June for something like £80 Million (equal share)

Future revenues from Prize money (end of season) and Tv Income (end of season) sponsor ships (perhaps annually) next seasons equal share (1st June) are all paid out at different times.

Remember also that ITV Digital collapsed leaving lots of clubs struggling for cash as they have spent the money before it arrived.

So financially it isn't that smart to spend money you haven't yet received... even if you know its coming

Don't forget the £100m income for selling JOC, Baldock, Fleck and Stevens this summer :p

The transfer window is just another cosmetic load of shite to pander to selling papers and letting "sports" channels fill hours of programming with nothing but made up bollocks.
Only clubs doing business are those who might need a player to push them to a title or promotion and those desperately trying to avoid relegation. We don't fall into either category and so are, happily, in a position to, largely, not get drawn in to wasting wads of money in an inflated market.
Relax, enjoy the ride, don't waste time worrying when there isn't much to worry about.

Why did Chris say pre window then we need to constantly keep moving forward and he would be asking for money this window
Now if Chris thinks that the signings of rodwell and maybe the lad ftom forest is moving this football club forward then I'm sorry but I don't agree I'm happy to come back at the end of the season and see if these two are pushing the currently 11
I doubt they will

Then it will all start again the summer
Nededing to move players on then bringing in players that will need time to adjust to our system

He wouldnt have signed a new contract if he didnt think we were progressing as a club

No he wouldn't but like he said about players doesn't mean they will stay if a better offer comes along

Or the owner doesn't match is ambition
And I'm sure if you spoke to Chris off canera he would say he wasn't able to bring in the players he wanted due to the funds not being available
Because I'm sure he would like to bring players of the likes Liverpool have over the last few windows given money is no object

Until now surly the impending ownership appeal would have had some bearing on what was spent etc?

Because it's part of the game.

How many of our usual match day squad, that he has signed, arrived as part of any January transfer window? None.
We do our real business in the summer and tinker around in January.
