Was just about to post something similar. Cousin's husband is a big Chelsea fan, so I messaged him last night.

His comments mirror the above. Basically said he's very comfortable in either position and that they have very high hopes for him.

"Future captain" was also mentioned.
Just to add a bit of balance, my mate who is a Chelsea STH has said he’s looked fine when used. Tidy, nothing crazy. Didn’t want to commit much more about his potential. Not to say this is a downer on the signing, but just to add a bit of balance to any enthusiasm. It wouldn’t be the first time we’ve signed a highly rated youngster from a good PL team and got a bit over-excited. I’m hopeful though. I’d see him as a long-term centre back who can cover right back for experience. Ben White, Phil Jagielka even.

he will look even better playing in the championship will be a great signing if we get him

Let’s be right though, we still need another right back. We needed cover at the back centrally because what we had last season was fucking bobbar and needed dismantling, plus Anel has made it clear he wants out, and will likely go down to the wire before he departs.
So makes sense if we can get this lad for now and nurse him through to the end of the window at RB and hope he doesn’t pick up an injury.
Then I’d expect…in fact you could say demand we get at least a specialist right back and then have another CB ready to press the button on should Anel depart.

By the end of the window we need 2 for every spot with the youth lads in the wings ready to plug holes in the match day squad through injury….because we know we will pick loads of them up.

Agreed. If we are going down the high press route this season which it looks like we are, then more than the average number of injuries are inevitable unfortunately. 2 for every position is a sensible approach.

Agree we need cover in every position, but not sure we are too short if we get Gilchrist in. We will have RCBs of Souttar and Anel with Gilchrist able to cover and RBs of Gilchrist and Seriki with Shackleton able to cover. If Anel is sold we may need a replacement, so worrall could still be on the cards in that scenario.

Alan Roberts? 😘

What a player.
Think he joined the same time as Bryson.
Bryson was good, a steady Eddy and hard worker where Roberts was the wizard of the dribble.

Still remember that night match when we beat Newcastle 3-0 in the cup. Kept thinking, where has this Alan Roberts player come from? He totally destroyed Newcastle that night.

I thinl i read that he went on to become a man of the cloth. Vicar or something up in the north east.

Talented lad as a footballer, and always looked like he had just slept rough and then been pulled through a hedge backwards with his dishevelled appearance. Came in as an unknown, made a startling first impression, then asked to move after 1 season and disappeared into footballing obscurity. I think he was quoted in an interview of saying he wasn't a big fan of Bassett's type of football (which is strange as Bassett got the best out of him as a footballer) whilst he wasn't overly bothered about football, and was more into spiritual learnings. That's fair enough, not everyone wants to or aspires to be a footballer even if they have natural ability as one.

It’ll be just our luck that the transfer is delayed due to the Lane being closed cause of the riots!

He was a superb player. One of my favourites. A definite Harry Bassett find.

Agree......it's rare we bring in a non Premier League player and it shocks you how good they are.
I remember he left under a cloud....he only played a single season and was still under contract.....
so much to look forward too....then out of blue remember Bassett announcing it's been agreed he can leave the club....with no real reason given
and he kind of packed in football at the age of aged 25.

Mark Duffy had the same effect......same with him.....kept thinking he's hardly known on the national stage so why is this lad so good.

My early memories of football was the mid 70's and my first favourite player was Liverpools Steve Highway.
Always liked players who can dribble past defenders as though they're not there....hence why I particularly enjoyed Sabella, Roberts and Duffy.

Anyway back on track......hoping we can agree this Gilchrist deal.....surely we should expect 1 or 2 more players....able to play against Preston.
