Gilchrist's worst game for us so far, but highlights how good he’s also been on and off the ball to have a shocker like that.

He’ll be fine though. Bringing Kenny in will help take the pressure off him with Seriki not being fit

His levels have definitely dropped whether that’s temporary or not he needs a spell out of the starting line up and we need another option in that spot as well as a few others.

He was carried by a strong defence. He’s been a weak link the entire season. It was just covered up by those around him. And now he’s crumbling as the pressure is on. The benefit to Kenny coming in is not to take the pressure off Gilchrist it’s to stick him on the bench.

I’ll disagree there. But Kenny coming in is a positive for the strong squad we have

I was posting on here about my doubts on Gilchrist from the very start. For me there was a lot of fairly lazy thinking that because our defence was doing so well, some fairly basic defending from Gilchrist was so good. He was still not good on the ball. Still poor positionally. Still poor at blocking crosses. Still poor at over-lapping. I hope he comes good but the hill I will die on is that he’s not been particularly good all season and just got lucky the rest of the defence was so good.

I suppose an easier way of saying it is that I guess we’ll just agree to disagree 😂.

It’s a good point, apologies for appearing dismissive, we’ll probably get back to this when things have settled, but I’m 2 hours ahead of the uk and knackered as well as being fed up with some other characters on this forum today/ tonight… on top of the game.

You’re a good poster normally so wasn’t intending to dismiss but actually wanted to reply and bookmark my reply for later this weekend 😂

Don’t worry, I didn’t take it that way at all. I think I’d also posted at a point of heightened tension from me because I’d been watching at home on delay and couldn’t quite believe my eyes as to what happened tonight. And I’d just felt strongly on Gilchrist all year. Pick up again another time!

How many times has he been hooked at half time or at least should’ve been hooked at half time.

Don’t forget how turgid that first half against the pigs was, how they targeted gilchrist and set up to let a very limited player have more of the ball.

Seriki doesn’t come on for gilchrist at half time we don’t win that derby, simple as that

Gilchrist is a shit right back, simple as that and it’s been holding us back all season

Just thought I’d ask, to understand if it was contractually possible. I wouldn’t want to see it happen, btw

Pros and cons here. Obvious pro is it frees up a loan space if Wilder wants a loan centre half.

I think Gilchrist might be more of a back up in the second half of the season, it seemed odd he wasn't training this week on the video but I could be reading more into this. I suspect if he has gone back Wilder won't have said anything before Derby and maybe Darren is hinting that he has gone back etc.

On the other hand I could be reading more into it than there is 😂.

A scenario I've cooked up in my head... Webster becomes available for a loan from Brighton once they sign Eiran Cashin from Derby.
We send Gilchrist back to Chelsea and bring Webster in.

The CB position is so important that I'd rather we loaned a really good one than signed an average one on a permanent, just to accommodate two RB loanees.

Appreciate Webster may not be willing to drop down, but the same principle applies if its somebody else of a higher level than Darling / Dunne (neither of whom feel like substantial upgrades).

yes noticed he wasnt training was wondering same seing as dunne can also play right back if gilchrist is going back to chelsea and were bringing both dunne and darling in 🤔

Gilchrist has been properly done over by our lack of depth. Having to play far more games/minutes than expected. As far as I'm aware, he's never complained. His form has tailed off but hardly surprising. We were very much top of the league when he was playing a normal amount of games

Think it's unlikely he returns but I think he will have to up. His game to stay in. The side
Hopefully he's just fatigued and will come back stronger

Simply not true, Gilchrist has had a very good season for a young loanee finding his way. Have you not noticed where we are in the league or our defensive record up to Souttars injury ? Gilchrist was a huge part of that, lately he is running on fumes, mentally which is understandable as a young lad playing every game in the Championship.

I strongly disagree. I’ll admit that I’m judging him based purely on his performances and not factoring in at all whether he’s young and/or learning his way, but I’m well aware of our positioning in the league and how we played with Souttar. My opinion is that far from being a “huge part of that” Gilchrist was a passenger being carried. I said from the start he looked poor. Everyone is welcome to their own opinion but I trust my eyes.

Last few games aside, he's had a good season for us so far, but he's only 21 in his first proper run in a team at senior level, same as Peck though Peck has played less games.

Like Peck, he's learning how to make the step up from U21's to the first team, same way Arblaster did with Port Vale last season, same way McAtee did with us in 22/23.

As fans, have we expected more out of him because we've got him on loan from Chelsea rather than somewhere like Bournemouth or Forest, where we might have been a little more patient with him?

Despite his recent form and it being obvious that he could do with being benched for a few games (which should happen now we have Harry Clarke), I hope we keep him until the end of the season at least, give him the chance to either earn his place back or contribute from the bench.

Gilchrist has been hammered by us due to the continual absences of Seriki and Shakleton. Plus, his left hand man and defensive rock (Souttar) has gone. You can also add to this the fact that he barely gets help from whoever has played in front of him this season. I think we should give the kid a break it’s not all down to him “being shit” at all.

I wouldn't be surprised if he moved to CB and did well. An interesting possibility could be playing him there with Dunne at RB providing more physicality

It’s would be INSANE to send back one of the three senior players in the squad who can actually play one of the 2 Centreback spots .

We need a minimum 4 centrebacks to deal with our injury record as well as suspensions.

Ideally dunne or darling or other / Robinson / anel and Gilchrist for the 2 CB spots

Then Clarke / Gilchrist / Seriki for RB

I hope Gilchrist gets a much needed rest now we have options at RB. He has been fine without being exceptional this season but dropped off last few games. Clearly misses Souttar guiding him through games - understandable given his age - so whoever we bring in at CB needs to be a proper leader to get him back firing. Can see him being more than useful cover across RB/CB for the rest of the season.

I agree with the sentiment. Just wanted to note 'senior' is doing some heavy lifting here though. I believe he's actually a couple of weeks younger than Baptist, so very much still learning his game and inconsistency comes with that.

I’ve said my bit on him so I’ll leave it after this but I’m judging him based purely on the performances I’d hope to get from a right back in the Championship. I’m comparing him to others I’ve seen at the level. I’m comparing him to George Baldock and Jayden Bogle. I’m comparing him to Seriki. I’m not judging him based on his age nor based on where he’s come from because neither matter when he’s playing 90 minutes week in, week out for us. Especially as a loanee for which any “development” we see will likely benefit another team. He’s obviously the best we’ve got but I just think he’s been poor throughout the season and people are only realising that now because he’s suddenly under more pressure and therefore crumbling a bit and playing even worse. Even when we were winning and keeping clean sheets he’s never looked comfortable in possession. Never been good back tracking. Never good stopping crosses going in. Never good over-lapping. Broken record over here i know but people can feel free to come to me with counter points of things he’s actually done well beyond “been a part of a strong defence” or “done OK for someone learning on the job”. Both of these may be true but neither are things he’s actually good at.
