Bit of an odd game really. We played well in parts and could conceivably have been 4-1 up yet found ourselves hanging on in the tiny Cherry Red Records stadium.

We lined up 3-5-2 with the only change from last Sunday being Ebanks-Landell coming in for Wilson.

The game was fairly even for the first 15 minutes before United began to exert some pressure which culminated in DUFFY showing some excellent composure, twisting and turning in the Wimbledon box before putting an effort into the corner.

SHARP put us 2-0 up from Done's cross (I'd love to describe it in more detail but I was queueing for food!) and we looked comfortable. However, with the half petering out a fortuitous rebound off Freeman left the Wimbledon winger with the time and space to find an unmarked Poleon 8 yards out and he planted a header past Moore for 1-2.

The second half saw an enforced change with Fleck coming on for Basham and in the first 20 minutes of the second half United carved out enough chances to put the game to bed. Duffy bent a shot over the bar with keeper Clarke in no man's land, before the same player put another shot wide of the post after Done's clever stepover had put him clear 20 yards out. Done then went clean though from Fleck's through ball, rounded Clarke buy could only find the side netting and it looked like we wouldn't make our dominance pay but the same two players combined again with the difference being that DONE was able to roll the ball in this time around.

That should have been that but a soft free kick given on the edge of our area saw a clever routine fund a free man at the back post and he steered a volley back across Moore for 2-3.

We then sat off but had a couple more chances with substitutes Clarke and then Scougall showing a lack of composure. We saw the game out with little fuss but it was far closer than it should have been.

United ratings:
Moore 6: didn't have a lot to do: claimed a couple of crosses, best away one ambitious effort and picked the ball out of his net twice

Ebanks-Landell 7.5: nothing for past him. Excellent in the air and strong on the ground. It looked harsh to drop Wilson but EEL did well

Wright 7.5: one excellent block and marshalled the defence well. Made sure he was never exposed to the Dons quick forwards.

O'Connell 7: did the simple things well.

Freeman 6: quiet game, didn't get forward much at all

Lafferty 6: same as Freeman

Basham 5: off injured at half time but he gets caught under the high ball far too much. Didn't do much in possession either.

Coutts 6.5: tidy with the ball and at the forefront when we were on top. Faded when Wimbledon came back into it.

Duffy 6: scored one, missed two and was generally peripheral

Sharp 5.5: scored, booked and taken off after an hour. Needs to do more with his back to goal.

Done 7: non-stop. Two superb runs off the ball resulted in one bad miss and one goal.

Subs:
Fleck (for Basham, h/t) 7.5: night and day on the ball compared to Basham. Gets his head up and picks a pass

Clarke (for Sharp, 65) 5: didn't look interested

Scougall (for Done, 80) n/a: not on long enough to make an impression

I should point out that my view wasn't the best - I couldn't see anything down the right touchline in the second half!

It looks - dare I say it - like we are starting to have a particular 'shape'. Sharp needs to up his game and I think Basham's days are numbered. We still need grit in midfield to complement Fleck's obvious creativity.

Well done United. Went ahead, and stayed ahead, and that shows promise.

If I were Clarke I'd be pissed off and uninterested, but he's just got to suck it up until he gets his chance. Billy will have a crap period and Done's hamstring will ping at some time.

Well done Blades...another three points set's is up nicely for Posh next week..
UTB!

And dont forget lavery will be in contention soon

If I were Clarke I'd fuck off because he really isn't what we need. He's Darius Henderson Lite with a poor touch, lack of composure, poor goals per chances created ratio, and a pig (just thought I'd throw that one in there :) ).

Great result today, the momentum's building and its a huge improvement on the first few weeks. Long may it continue.

Score line flattered than today in all honesty. If Done and Duffy had stuck away a couple of sitters, we'd have avoided a real nervy last 10. Overall a very encouraging show - Done, Duffy, EEL best performers.

With those marks out of 10, god forbid what they will get if they lose.....
Harsh in the extreme.

Possibly but we should have put a poor Wimbledon side to bed. I suppose you could add half a mark or a mark to them all but was it that good a performance?

Duffy 6 sharp 5.5

Sorry I know I didn't go and I appreciate the report but sharp and Duffy have 2 jobs, score and set up, they both did their job.

Simplistic in the extreme. Sharp didn't do anything but score. I know that's partly what he's in the team to do but I expect more from a talisman.

We should have scored 5 today and Duffy missed two glorious chances - he didn't even work the keeper. Yes, he put one away but if we settle for average performances we'll be in this league for a while longer.

Thought Duffy was class today, some of his balls wide were sublime and others should've read them better and gambled more.

Looks a very good player to me and scored a cracking goal

I think you're being very harsh on Sharp – his link up play was much better than of late, and he had a solid enough game. The quality is still evident – used his strength and acceleration to turn his man from deep on the far touchline in the first half before hitting a cross in. It was a good powerful header for his goal. His booking was idiotic though – and a petulant challenge following him losing possession. There were other time he worked hard to win back possession though.

Duffy I was critical of last week at Gillingham but I thought he was much better today – less wasteful, and looked a constant threat. There is no doubt he should have done better with the chance just after halftime, but his overall game was reasonable, and he helped keep us on the front foot.

Thing I'd criticise the most was yet again a series of wasted corners. Their keeper Clarke has Long-esque confidence issues (there was an oh too familiar argument between two Dons fans behind me on actively undermining his confidence at today's game), yet every floated corner was a gift to him.

Glad that no-one's allowing themselves to get carried away with what was actually a good performance.
With better finishing the game would have been over 20 mins into the second half after 15 mins when we passed them off the park.
This was the spell with Duffy and Does misses.
Cut out the silly fouls and our GA will look much better.

Thought Duffy ran the show first half, then missed 2 relatively easy chances and then disappeared.
Done was MOM.
Not convinced by Lafferty but give him time.
Defence played well against their aerial threat.
Think we play too many long balls but look good when the ball is on the ground.
Pokemon had a good game for them but they were poor especially in defence.

Sharp's job is to score goals. Last season, in a poor side he delivered with 21 goals. (Joint 3rd in league with Barnsley's Sam Winnall) I dread to think where we would have finished last year without his goals.

While ever he's scoring he's getting an 8 from me.

At least this time we now are managing to play well and impose ourselves some of the so called weaker sides in the division. We never looked comfortable against anyone last year and we got dicked on a fairly regular basis by sides who went down in the end.

I know we only won by the one goal but the commentary at least made it sound like we were in control and on the front foot > we honestly never looked like that last season.

He scored and we won it really is that simple

He scored, again.

It really is that simple

Fully agree.

Until the likes of Clarke and / or Lavery (when fit) take their chances and make it hard to leave them out there's no real argument for removing a player who's scoring regularly.
If he'd have played brilliantly and not scored he would have got an 8 and we would have drawn

I grew up reading The Sunday People. They did marks out of 10 but the minimum was 4 and to get that you had to be sent off in the first 10 minutes.

Maybe that has permanently altered my perception of ratings but those marks seem very low for a team that (apparently) deservedly won away.

I appreciate the report though, particularly the honesty regarding the second goal. Deadbat never seems to even blink never mind nip out for a pie.
