Was listening to P or G last night and I'm not sure if it was Adkins live or a recording but I'm sure I heard him say one of the reasons for the crap performance at Bury was because "Conor" was injured. Did I hear this correctly?

I think what you heard was 'Collo' it's Adkins attempt at being one of the lads. Personally, I wish he was above that sort of bollocks, realise he is the team manager and refer to him as Neil Collins, maybe then he could start to exert some sort of authority over the idle set of wankers. :(

Perhaps he had to censor it because RS wouldn't allow him to say Cunt?

Presuming this is the same interview as we've already heard.

I've nothing against our manager referring to players by shortened versions of their names. Warnock does it. Roy Hodgson does it. Many successful managers do.

Likewise, as I've mentioned, people blame McCabe's residency in Brussels as being one of the roots of our problems, when he attends more games and spends more time in Sheffield than other, more successful owners spend at games and in their club's city.

No I don't have a problem with that at all. It was the fact the "Conor" Sammon being missing would have made the slightest difference. A poster above heard it as "Collo".

I heard the interview. This wasn't just manager speak, I thought Adkins sounded like an absolute mental case. Can't remember any specifics but he was trying to be positive about things that didn't happen in the game and seemed to believe what he was saying. Feel sorry for him.

There is plenty to legitimately criticise Adkins for without extending this to the trivial. Too much is placed on manager interviews – before Adkins we had "boring, bullying Clough", before that "boring Weir", before that "boring Danny", interspersed with "passionate Morgs". People used to hate "whinging, embarrassing Warnock" for his post-match interviews – it really isn't important.

For what it's worth, I also refer to a lot of our players by nicknames. These would need to be bleeped out in a radio interview.

It might seem trivial, but if he's all matey with people like Collins and Hammond, how is he going to exert any sort of authority over the players?

I agree Swiss ,he cant do it financially as they probably earn more than him ,at this time he has the same amount of respect from the fans as they do ,he needs to man up about the whole situation and let a few of these wankers know whos boss. I don't think some who them are bright enough to realise they may be without a job in 3 months time.

But then wouldn't you be trying to impress any scouts or even change the mind of your manager ?

Clough used to call Campbell-Ryce "Jam" in interviews – were they particularly matey? Warnock used to refer to "Tongey", "Browny", "Monty" and "Morgs" – so many matey nicknames that it's remarkable Warnock lasted as long as he did.

It seems trivial because it is trivial.

Or is it that they know they're going to be out of a job in 3 months time which is why they don't give a fuck?

Is it also the case that they realise they will definitely be out of a job if we get promoted. They are inadequate in this league but will be even more so in the one above, hence the attitude of let's just miss out to keep the possibility of a job.

But then wouldn't you be trying to impress any scouts or even change the mind of your manager ?
No, I'd just want to make sure I didn't get injured because I'd expect my agent to find me a new club.
My best chance of getting a new contract would be to see Adkins out of the door and hope the next bloke thinks I can do a job for him.

If he's lamenting Collins being out then does this again raise the likelihood of an extended deal for good old "Collo" in the summer?

Generally speaking Warnock and Clough got respect by the ways they handled the players, so it was almost irrelevant

But as sitwell says, it's hard to see how Adkins has any respect from the players and there is certainly a strong group of players, perhaps undermining Adkins attempts.

So for Adkins, every little issue will be an issue.

They wouldn't cross him tho. I was having a few shirts signed by the squad in China a few years back. They all had to leave a space at the top for the Gaffer's signature. None of the players would go near that space or they would be fined. May sound trivial, but shows respect. Adkins comes across as soft to me.

Adkins not having the respect of the players would be a legitimate issue of concern. Adkins referring to players by nickname is not.

For the record, I don't think he commands the respect of all the players, and I would imagine this is a key reason for reducing the squad (aka shipping out the malcontents). And I think that will happen in greater numbers in the summer. We frankly need a clearing of the decks – that would still be true if Adkins were to leave tomorrow.

I think sometimes the fun has to stop and he has to get more serious, but whilst it's about context (ie engaging the media and fans on radio), you'd hope that there is a more serious discussion happening behind closed doors... But Adkins and Jim I think we have the chuckle brothers...

Jim: how are the lads feeling after that defeat addo?
Adkins: hey Jimbo, they're a little sad today, Collo got a little bump on his tootsie.
Jim: oh tell him and the lads not to worry, that bad man Clough can still be blamed
Adkins: oh thanks Jimbo, he was a bad man. I've got to rush though, my missus is in the hot tub with Hammo and I'm going to read the art of war to them. Any messages for the honest, hard working lads?
Jim: well you can tell them that I've had the first ever GCB in Saudi Arabia.
Adkins: oh great Baxo and Che-o will love that. Catch you later!
Jim: hashtag bettertogether Nigey

Bit late, though? The players (sorry, 'the lads') have had 6 months of the 'old' NA. If he suddenly changed, it'd be like the wife suddenly finding a bit of mild S & M interesting.

I'd be quite appalled if it didn't given recent form. Adkins doesn't strike me as the type to publicly hang people out to dry, and I've no problem with that provided words are being had behind closed doors. Warnock's "can't fault the lads" comments were a classic example of that, when he'll have been reading them the riot act privately. NW used to get constantly criticised for that by some incidentally. It's generally a sign that a manager is ineffective in dealing with players privately when they have to resort to public criticism, though on occasions it may be a more effective way of motivating a particular player based on their personality. But generally I'd take it as a sign of the manager losing control.

Sammon normally makes the tea before the match. Someone else did it at Bury, but didn't put the milk in first. At least that's what I heard from someone ITK :)

Sammon puts the milk in first? The heretic, theres another reason to slag him off, cant win a header and cant make a proper brew, what a tosser

Too logical for some of our wasters ....... you might equally say ..... shouldn't we try to put in a tackle in midfield, or shouldn't we stop the other side having free headers in our box !!

Agreed ...... we need to ship most of the remaining players out and completely rebuild.

The squad we have has ably evidenced over the last 4 years that they cannot effectively compete at this level of football .....

I normally agree with a lot of what you post Swizzler but this is utter horseshit. Clough was (and probably still is) a dictatorial fear merchant, prone to falling out with players over petty differences.

A bit of fear can be a strong ally in management ,as long as respect is an equal quality. All the best managers had a bit of fear and unpredictabilty about them. Nigel seems very nice and that can easily turn into soft touch if your a thick footballer with a massive ego and pockets full of cash. Clough was a disciplinarian ,and probably did get carried away but he didn't take no shit and was a good motivator and organiser. I have seen nothing from adkins to see things changing soon and at the moment lets be honest ,he is living on past reputation alone. He is in danger of losing the fans ,and it is a very long way back once that happens. I think a bit of honesty from him ,instead of these bullshit ,stereotype interviews might help ,but he is reaching a precipice and he has to address it sharpish.
