Adkins' high point

Not even close. I'd take 10 seasons of Adkins over 1 with Robson. The team Robson had should have walked the Championship! I'd have honestly rather have picked a random fan in the stadium to take charge of a game over Robson!

Runner up goes to Adrian Heath.

p.s. I'm not so much defending Adkins, more pointing out we've appointed some absolute garbage as managers!

Agreed, Robson had more money to spend than any manager ever had before or since and still completely fucked up.

Adkins may have faired better this season perhaps but we will never know.

We were so crushingly inadequate that there were times I didn't even bother to stand up if we scored. We had nothing to play for and the players inspired no enthusiasm whatsoever. I think the Bradford game was the only time I felt they really deserved our support.

PS - Coutts had a blinder. :)
me too.

there were other times when the crowd were applauding the team like parents clapping in the stragglers at a school sports day. Great that things matter so much more this seson

He's probably getting paid more by us for not coming in to work than Wilder and Knill are for working wonders.

It's an educated guess rather than being ITK.

Terrible wasted opportunity by Adkins as I was quite excited about his appointment but I echo all the comments about how all enthusiasm was drained from me. He spunked a lot of cash too, with zero legacy.

Then after that we played Peterborough at home and it was back to square one and another team that glided past our 'midfield ' and defence.

A win was never followed up with a run.

As others have said it was horrible turning up at the Lane.

God only knows where we'd be now had he remained and I dread to think what our personnel would be!!!!

He was without doubt the worse manager in our history given the resources he had.

Last season had all the traits of a relegation season.

Best player sold, reduced the wage bill, only made 2 permanent signings, one of which was a free. Resources eh? As much as Adkins' reign was a disappointment, Adams, Weir and Robson were all worse.

Remind me of the geese moment again please?

Neill Collins scored at Swindon and the celebration was as a line of geese. Turns out that Adkins had them all watching a motivational video before the game about how flocks of geese take it in turn to lead when flying long distances.

What a load of bollocks that turned out to be.

Think we pretty much covered it between us there Balham :)

On her birthday (I know, I know), I took Lady HB to watch Blades beat Fleetwood last season. The two (and more recently three) of us have watched some bobbins in our time following the Blades, but that's the only time after a match that she questioned why she should bother to pay to watch... and that was after a win.

It was a shock then, and a truth in hindsight.
True, until that game I never realised that a team could win 3-0 and yet play so poorly.

Interesting interview with Mark Duffy in the Oldham programme. He said that when he was at Scunthorpe you'd come to Bramall Lane and try and nick a point, but with Burton last season they controlled the game from start to finish, United didn't have one attack and Duffy couldn't believe how off it we were. One thing I remember about that game is that the 4th official held the sign up for 6 added minutes, and bearing in mind we were losing 1-0, everyone booed.

Edgar's gone back to Canada

He plays for the Vancouver Whitecaps and still plays international football for Canada. I used to think he was a pretty good player, probably because he was the only one we had who was not technically classed as vertically challenged.

And Blades fans proved that you shouldnt be afraid to say boo to a goose!

Adkins had been watching too many films, his favourite actor is.....

I still can't work out how Adkins ended up with four promotions on his CV, one could be luck, two very lucky, but four? I am genuinely baffled that one manager could stumble across promotions four times in his career and turn out to be so bad.

David Weir - Out of his depth in his first proper managers job, but looking back, wasn't he trying to play a similar style to how we play now? I seem to remember him saying that 4-4-2 was outdated and that he wanted us to play with a bigger midfield, or something like that. Could be wrong, just seem to remember an interview. Also, back in those days, players arrived without warning for the managers. Dave Kitson was one and Marlon King was another.

Agreed ..... in fact Blackwell was also a producer of turgid garbage after the first few months of his tenure ..... :eek:o_O

If Wilson or Tufty had the money that Robson was given ( and squandered ) we would have been a real unit !!

Fast forward to Sharps first goal against Oldham where I whipped off my mates hat and kissed his bald head.

Ah so that's where the 'Weirdo' nickname came from! :D

Sadkins' high point was the narrow defeat at Old Trafford on Jan 9 this year. We supposedly netted around £1m, which went in Adkins' pay-off...

With Southampton he had an international quality squad in league one. And again an international quality squad in the Championship
With Scunthorpe Billy Sharp scored about 90 goals.

You are correct any of us could achieved the same with those squads. It takes no management skill at all to get back to back promotions just ask Dave Bassett.

This management lark is a complete piece of piss really especially if you have the right squad.

I read an article with Heath where he explained how he'd want a team to line up and play and was very excited when he came to us. Sadly he never turned his theory in to practice with us. I'd say the same for Weir.

You can kind of understand why Adkins might be the breath of fresh air needed to ignite a promotion push with the right squad and circumstances (where good-enough players are already in place, and where the club has been underachieving and there's a bad vibe around).

As has been proven, we needed the exact opposite; someone who could come in and get rid of the deadwood, pull a few players up by giving them a choice of "my way or the highway" (as opposed to niceties and encouragement), someone who can find efficient transfer dealings and recognise squad deficiencies, someone with the tactical nous to grind out a result (that might otherwise have meant a point).

I'm not sure Adkins is any of those things. Given the right club (one with a decent squad, built by another manager) he might even do the promotion trick again, but sooner or later, he'd get found out.

Nah it is no longer up for debate.

Back to back promotions is a piece of piss and getting the likes of Scunny promoted again after relegation is an easy enough "trick" to pull off.

I guess that is why we bounced straight back after relegation to League 1....
