Brownie Jnr was mascot on the first day of the season. I’d put his name down a while back and totally forgot about it, and got a phone call on the day the fixtures came out and I had more or less first pick of which game it would be, so I went for the first game of the season.

Unfortunately for me it was a couple of days after his birthday as I’d have liked to given it him as a birthday present, but I decided it was a fuck it, you are a good kid (sometimes) and deserve something like this, because I never got the chance to do it and would loved it, so you can do present.

Got to say United got it absolutely spot on. It cost £250. He got a photo with all the players, signed match ball, free kit, walked out with Jamal Blackman and it will be a day he will, and I will remember forever. Shelby and Courtney who looks after the mascots couldn’t have done any more.

Only thing is there is a photo that was taken that day that seems to be the stock photo of Blackman, which is a photo of him walking out with Brownie Jnr. He has been in the programme a couple of times since, in the Star, Sun, daily mail and a few other places.

All that, and add the fact it's something the lad will never forget, suddenly £250 looks like quite a bargain I'd say.

It's a lovely gesture. I like Northampton for the way they handled losing their management team to us, which they did with good grace, and good wishes. I watch for their results and want them to do well, as their loss was very much our gain. A top club with fans who deserve greater success (who does that remind me of?). Oh, and their shirts are a great colour (much like Hearts!).

Ask for charity donations instead of gifts, it’s a nice gesture by the Northampton fan, but there are much more deserving causes than kids not being able to be mascots.

If anything it’s something the club should look at doing for free anyway. I know at Coventry it was free (might still be), the parents just had to buy the kit I believe.

At least he knows where his money is going to by doing this and who will benefit. If he was to give to a charity instead how much of that will reach those it’s intended for, as opposed to oiling the wheels of a huge slick international corporation whose senior management live a life of luxury off the back of people’s donations and spend the majority of contributions on marketing and such like. (And hassle people into giving more and more - especially preying on the elderly and vulnerable).

Not a fan of charities I take it?

Give it to a small local charity then!

Yes I do mate. St Luke’s is the main one I give to. And the Sheffield Children’s. I give voluntarily though. I refuse to be badgered for direct debit payments. I think it’s immoral actually what some of these big charities do.

My mother in law is in her 80’s with a heart of gold. She’s had doorstep callers and has been coerced into signing up to three or four big charities.

She’s then getting phone calls every month from them trying to get her to increase her payments. She’s paying out about 25% of her bloody pension to them each month and she’s struggling to have things herself. Their “business model” is built upon making people feel guilty for not giving. I think it’s deplorable.

And as for the stuff going on with child abuse at Oxfam and the latest stuff with Save the children”, well...

I think a law should be passed to make it public how much of the donations reach those who it is supposed to be for. Then we could make an informed choice.

I would like to see the charges for being a mascot reduced considerably, to a notional amount after all what is the actual cost, a junior kit and a football?

We can afford that - chicken feed for twenty odd matches a season.

As another initiative why not roll out something like this?

Holt has pledged to continue it for the next five years, which will cost around £150,000.

It's a wonderful gesture from Adam and one he should be justifiably proud he's made . But sweet Jesus, he drew the short straw when it came to surnames !
" Cobblers " . They may aswell call him " Pair of Bollox " and have done with .
Unfortunately that's all that was left, as all the bollocks had already been dropped at Swillsborough .

-Is that the operator on the line?
-(Bored voice) Yes?
-Well you better get off 'cos there's a train coming.

It's amazing how you'd always find hilarious stuff to do in the school holidays.
'can i speak to Master Bates please'? :D

Have had first hand experience of this when sorting out my father in law’s finances following his Alzheimer’s diagnosis a few years ago. Sometimes that main charities are nothing short of crooked.
