Player Suggestion Adam Webster

I know he didn't make piles of individual errors, but the drop off in accountability and positional awareness was insane and he made everyone around him look worse because of it.

I cba to pull up the stats, but pretty sure we went from having the best defence to a fairly average one
Oh we very much did. Souttar not getting injured could have massively changed the season. He enabled us to be very solid at the back.
But until the week of 3 defeats we seemed to be doing enough to get ourselves in the top 2.

But Holding wasn't necessarily fit enough for a bit.

It's pretty unanimous that we all think now that the money spent on Cannon should have gone on a CB. However we did need striker re-inforcements as well.
That season Campbell was playing well but Moore was out injured till nearly the end of the season from December.

Has anyone thought that maybe Wilder signs these injury prone players because if they're fit then they're decent but the gamble is of course getting them fit and we can't currently afford to sign younger, fitter versions like Anel for example.

I'm sure Wilder would prefer to sign Anel! Sometimes our fans come out with stuff like Wilder loves signing injury prone players! We could just sign cheap, crap but fit players but how would that help?! We need players who are decent quality and those that are available in that bracket are often past 30 or approaching 30 but injury prone. I.e Bamford. That's worked well in fairness. Same with Campbell.
Most fans think their club is uniquely incompetent and signs crap players. They just don't pay enough attention to other clubs, who they assume only sign fit, young, proven players that have never been injured in their lives.

Look, the last thing I want to do is interrupt a meltdown, but who is saying that he's signing for us?

I ask because we've seen similar reactions to us signing Seamus Coleman, Harry Clarke and Jack Robinson so far this summer. None of whom we've actually signed.

Yet. 👀

More to the point he is not giving our u21s a chance. Imagine what it's doing to Baptiste confidence knowing he prefers to sign crocks rather than trust him..

Agreed, im sure baptiste will have some paet atleast, but probably not as much as we or him was hoping for, would like to see Zatterström have a run out, if he wasnt in our plans i thought we would have loaned him out by now.

I see your point but obviously Wilder feels you can only have so many young players in the side. He said that regularly last season. We've already got Donovan, Seriki, Peck, Arblaster and last season Brookes. Whilst these in their own right are decent players you need some experience alongside them.

I think allowing Baptiste to go out on loan till Christmas to continue his development might be a good option. But he might stay and be part of the squad but I do understand what you're saying. CB is a pivotal position and if you make mistakes there it's often a goal. Younger players make more errors obviously

And what do we do if we DO trust Baptiste for a couple of games but he turns out to be not very good?
(I would trust him BTW, but I think we'd still need back-up)

I’d sooner we take a punt on a league two player than sign this type of player profile.

One in the squad is fine but we are becoming a team of past it crocks. At best we get a short term gain, but for a relatively high salary outlay.

Taking a punt on a league 2 player would require paying a transfer fee

Just to add to what I said above. Leaving bonuses and signing on fees aside (which will be much higher for the PL has been).

Take a 31-year-old former Premier League player on a free at £30k a week (approx average salary for top end Champ/lower PL). He costs £1.56m in wages for one year.

Alternatively, spend £1m on a promising 23-year-old from League Two and pay him £10k a week (a huge uplift from average L2 salaries at £2k a week, but let’s be conservative). His first-year cost is almost identical at £1.52m.

In year two, the younger player costs £1m less and might eventually be sold for £5m–£10m. The veteran will almost certainly leave for nothing.

Experience has its place, but repeatedly signing declining players on large wages (who’ve barely played and have injury concerns) isn’t low-risk recruitment. It’s expensive short-termism.

Desperate teams attract desperate players.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see Wilder stick his rehabilitation hat on and make a move for some wronguns.

But significantly lower wages, bonuses and signing on fees than someone who has been playing in the Premier League for years.

A far greater chance of creating some value too.
Agree, unfortunately we've got a scouting department that seem to be full-time work from home and have no internet access to view highlights/matches, so how would we identify these type of targets?

Thing is, its cash flow.

Paying that £1m transfer fee to a lower league club may result in them needing those funds sooner, so a good proportion of that would be paid up front. Whereas a salary is easily kept in the monthly budgets.

I'm sure when our accounts came out earlier in the year, that the club wasn't cash rich at all.

As we know too well, transfers are paid in instalments.

You’re also freeing up cash flow by paying lower salaries.

“Free” experienced players will command a signing on fee that could be fairly comparable, if not exceed a full transfer fee total for a lower league player.

They are, however when you're buying players from lower down the pyramid, those deals aren't split into instalments, the lower league clubs typically need the funds there and then due to the situation they're in.

I'm assuming that you didn't know signing on fees are paid over the duration of the contract too...

I did know that, as are agent fees. But it’s a like for like comparison. Given that the total values would be very similar.

Splitting a large signing on fee over years is depreciative. Doing so on a transfer fee with a higher probability of gaining a return on sale, less so.

No. You need the best players for the given match around them. Does not matter one jot if they are 17 or 37. It is truly amazing that some people do not think young professional footballers have not been playing the game literally since they could walk and once they get into "the men's game" they simply forget how to play unless they have someone "experienced" to tell them what to do.

This is bang on, but we do urgently need a very good centre back, now - a fit Webster is too good for this league.

Ok... But how many 17 year olds do you see playing in this league?

That's more a function of the elite teams hoovering up all the best talent, rather than that age not being good enough. That, and managers are too risky averse as a whole

I know what you mean, but.can't recall many 17yr olds playing regularly for anyone in my decades of following football. Even 18 is still young and rare.

Not meaning to be pedantic.

Webster on a free is a signing I'd have liked us to take a 1-year punt on coming into the Summer. It might not work out but he can be excellent.
it is what it is captain its the market were now in and could be a clever signing lot of doom and gloom about on this site but weve still got a good quality squad add 3/4 good loans and we will be fine

Thought this was meant to be happening today according to some on the forum? Clearly another one missed. CB target number 5 gone
