It was very, very different back then. At most night matches, the few lamps hanging down from the roof of the kop had blown so the kop was in total darkness. The 'lads' (bush jackets, banners made from sheets nailed to lengths of 4" x 2") would manufacture a ruck and one or two brave (daft?) coppers would steam in. The first thing you saw - silhouetted against the floodlit pitch - was their helmets flying into the air. They'd be surrounded by an angry mob of snarling spitting fans and, when they finally appeared at the back of the kop with some innocent they'd nabbed, they'd be covered from head to toe with spit.

Oh for the days when you could go to a football match and didn't have to bother watching the game...

In those days other fans were allowed on the kop and the stuff that was thrown backwards and forwards was unreal, a youth near me had a dart in his head when we played man u once. In those days I had never seen as many infirm people on the kop as lots seemed to have walking sticks.

I struggle with the idea that the action was out of character. It's understandable that things are sometimes done in the heat of the moment that are in politician's speak 'regrettable', but how could he happen to have acid on him at a match? That is premeditated, unless the match was played in a storm and he was unblocking the drains on the Kop. The guy may well now be a reformed character, and good luck to him, but I would not like to have been near him that day.
