Cloudwater have gone Keg only. Like Camden & Brewdog before them. I love cask ales & I love keg ales. I think there is a place for them both. I'm a CAMRA Member & a Brewdog Equity shareholder. I have the opportunity to travel a lot. And, I'm never happier than when I'm supping & ticking local, independent Craft Keg Beers. It is very rare to get cask conditioned beers outside the UK. Point being - I've supped a lot of keg beers in my time & they hold no fear for me. My favourite beer style (currently) would be a 7+% double or imperial IPA - intense tobacco/ginger bitterness, rather than citrus - red rather than yellow. Those are in my opinion far more suited to keg than cask. Chilled, fresh, effervescent. I'm drooling now.
I don't really know about price. Because it's not like with like is it. You're gonna get "twice as pissed" on a pint of 7.6% goo than a pint of 3.8% session wallop. My system is Little & Often. I used to be an ALECART. I still have mates who are ALECARTS. All hail ALECARTS. I'm not one. Because I don't have mammoth Gallon sessions any more, I'll be honest, I don't notice price as much. If I'm only having three. And, the IPAs, etc are lighting up. Three Dart Finish abvs. Then I pay what it is - and I don't think "oohh that's steep for a pint". Might as well be honest....
I can understand why a few disgruntled drinkers complain that keg is pricier. But, Cloudwater, etc don't go Keg to make more money. Tomorrow is Monday. At your Wetherspoons of choice, a pint of cask will be (say) £2.35 on the clip. Reduced to (say) £1.99 as it's Monday Club. I'll use my CAMRA 50p voucher & get it for £1.49. Room for us all....
