To give him his full title, Sir James is up there with Deano for me. There are certain players that just stand out and he was one of them. He would be the perfect striker for the current team and I wonder how much he’d be worth today ? £40 million maybe more?

£20m absolute max.

Was stood next to him at Manchester airport on Monday morning, he was flying to Geneva going skiing with his Mrs and another couple. Didn’t speak to him, did’t want him getting all big time in the queue.
Then, fuck me, Mark Hughes is on my flight to Malaga. Jet 2, he’s just trouksered a 4 million pay off from Stoke and he’s flying on budget airlines with plebs like me

Great player, poor signing. We couldn't afford him and he didn't do us any good in the long run.

And the less said about his disastrous second spell the better.

Today is his 40th birthday. A great player for us (first time round).

More than down to earth and friendly when talking to us near Bristol a few years ago.

Heard rumours of attitude as a player but no idea in truth.

Undoubtedly a top striker and considering he only made an impact in a shortish first spell, he ranks up there for me.

If I was Hughes I'd demand a refund.

He was the last top quality striker we had, simple as that. He did things that made young lads stick his picture on the bedroom wall, my son's are still there now.

Never rated him or his attitude or contribution, he tried when it suited him. The goal against Wendy saved his bacon , reminded me in everyway Lee hendrie did , thought they were flash but arrogant and were here for the money. Ruined our club like Robson did.

Beattie is the most overrated striker I've seen at the Lane. He had half-a-dozen decent games at the start of the 07-08 season and another half-a-dozen at the end of that season, where he held his hand up, took full responsibility and looked a real handful. I remember watching him in those early 07-08 games and thinking f*** me we've got another Deano here. Unfortunately, apart from those dozen games, he didn't give a flying one, shirked his responsibilities and never put a shift in, didn't look interested at all and was quite happy to toss it off imo.

I remember being gutted in summer 08 when he was injured throughout the transfer window and we lost the chance to get shut and paid the price for it when we missed out on promotion. We copped for him for half a season in 08-09 where we were border line play-offs, once we got shut in January (we were 7th at the time), our form and results were the best in the division for the second half of the campaign.
Maybe that was because Henderson was better suited to HOOF

Quite correct, Henderson was a much more effective leader of the line. The results and performances prove that out in the 08/09 season. With Beattie in the team play-off maybes, post Beattie title form.

On his first training session he allegedly turned up in his Bentley wearing a bath robe.

Fucking hero.

Never understood United fans obsession with disliking our main scorers cos of attitude etc Edwards, Blake, Beattie and more lately Sharp all cop for it off some brain boxes.

Goals win football games.
it's the hardest job in football. that's why they get paid the most.. can never understand the billy stuff.. 'oh he does nothing but score!' .. ffs. :)

Yep, to begrudgingly quote Pinchy - most of the #upanatem' brigade would rather have a player running his bollocks off like a headless chicken - and more often than not being too fucked to get back into the box or stuck out on the wing somehwere. Give me one striker who knows where the net is and he can do fuck all else for me. Beattie did, and he knew how to do it well. Never seen a sharper player in the box than him.

James Beattie was a hero for me. A great striker who had all the attributes you need to be a top striker, always put a shift in, and knew where then back of the net was. He would have been a superb signing for any manager with half a brain and would have taken most sides up, unfortunately our manager at the time was a useless, washed up old piss cart.

I can’t blame him for leaving at the time, he was ambitious as well, and McCabe had already began to constrict the funds available. I’d have just liked him for another 6 months as he would have taken us back up in the play offs.

What astounds me is the criticism and accusation he got of being a flash harry because he drove a Lambo with personal plates. Fair play to him what he deserved a flash motor with the career he had.
