After the anger and temporary depression of Saturday's QPR game fades, we only have to look to the Stadium of Shite for a ray of sunshine to appear

Sunderland 3 Sheffield Wednesday 0 HT and then more sunbeams

Sunderland 4 Sheffield Wednesday 0 . . . . more sun please

The mentality of ‘it’s ok if we don’t win as long as the pigs don’t’ is absolutely tinpot.

We shouldn’t even be in the same division as those wankers.
Was saying this in the pub yesterday. After 3 of the last 5 years in the PL, we should be the biggest club in the city by some considerable distance. The fact that we're not is a missed opportunity.

I don’t think it’s that simplistic. We’ve been able to go out and get quality players this summer as players still see us as a top end championship club, other clubs see us as a good place to develop their players the right way and the academy is still producing players of the level we’re at.

The step up last season from championship to premier league was huge and takes a lot of smart planning and spending to sustain ourselves there. We didn’t do the smart thing but I don’t think it would’ve made much difference.

The key is for relegated sides to go straight back so that in that promotion preseason they can spend and recruit to try and stay up.

It needs a whole club approach, it needs more money and a long term plan.

As you say, we’ve done 3 of 5 years in the premier league and I think that shows the progress from where we were

I was actually talking about off the pitch.... The Dore/HSBC training ground investment is the first 'bold' off the pitch statement we've made and should have been one of a number of investments....

The opportunity was there to use the money/profile/city centre location to really make us synonymous with Sheffield and hammer home being in the most high profile league in the world! We even had an FA Cup semi final too...

Wasted opportunity.

That’s simple then. We’ve not been financially capable to do it all.

And that's the biggest travesty! We've re-invested the majority of our money into the playing squad, yet at the start of this season we're essentially starting from scratch....

Yeah we’ve gone through cycles, but I do think we’re in a better place now with the playing staff we have compared to last season and even the promotion season.

But, those decisions will be judged whether we go up or don’t

Big mistakes we’ve made have been:
  • not getting players tied down so that they can’t leave for less than their worth
  • not moving aging players on before they were done
  • not having enough quality in the club to reduce playing time and exposure to injuries

It rhymes with Kian Chewster, the bad decisions just show a lack of idea in my opinion. We’ve ‘played’ at being a PL club and failed. We’re now at the start of a rebuild as a result.
Injured for most of his time at the club rather than being out and out crap. Signed for the right reasons - young and up and coming, like Berge, like McBurnie…. All three ended up having long injury issues

You’re right about playing at being a premier league club in amongst mega rich clubs

He’s been a failure though, there’s no way to spin it differently.

With you on the larger PL clubs, but we couldn’t even compete with the worst teams in the league for 2 of the 3 seasons. I know the reasons why but it doesn’t make it any more acceptable.

Its not spin with Brewster, players with a series of long term injuries are really unfortunate, sure it's a failure but the signing was right in many ways when we made it.
Was it the right signing for "right now" when we signed him? No, we needed a player that was ready to hit the ground running and whilst it seemed he was that right player in a similar mould to Mousset, who was still relatively successful at that time, it turned out that the mould they both came from was made of weetabix (can't remember who said this the other week but its bang on.

Taking it forwards, we should've learnt a lot... so we have to manage things better from now onwards.

All relevant points but on the pitch factors...

I'm thinking more:

  • match day experience that isn't like something out of the 1940's
  • fan zone's that actually brings people to help ground earlier and keep them afterwards (eg: Tottenham's new ground)
  • corporate facilities that can be used all year round (restaurant, facilities)
  • hotel (every major cricket ground has added a hotel which again can be used all year round for a reason)
  • community engagement - we should be brainwashing every football living child in the city!

There'll be others, but pretty sure we'd have gotten more out of these than Brewster, Luke Freeman and countless other 'gambles'....
