A Premier League Madine/Hanson?

A great point today especially having not played well, but I couldn't help thinking, up until when we scored it would be nice to have an out and out target man to bring on when we need to get up the pitch in games. McBurnie is a very good "complete" forward and does win his fair share of aerial duels but you only have to look at the impact Madine/Hanson had just in terms of creating chaos and providing restbite for our main strikers in the second half of seasons.

As it stands I don't think Robinson and Sharp offer enough of an impact off the bench which means if Moose starts we are lacking in ways to change the game. I know Sharp sort of assisted today's equaliser but I think we maybe watching the end of Sharp's United career he looks so sluggish and off the pace. As much I love him we can't be sentimental and give him a spot on the bench if better options are available to change games. Robinson may come good but he seems to struggle both with the physicality of the premier league and finding a position in our system. We can't play our fast dynamic style for 90 mins in very game so would be great to have a hold up guy as the season goes on. Any suggestions for who... UTB

There are 2 types of target men.

The Madine/ Hanson types are great to use as battering rams when teams park the bus (both were successful for us and did their jobs when required).
That type of player would have been useful to bring on against Newcastle....but it’s very rare that any team we play in the PL would be so negative.
In most games a Madine/ Hanson type would be too slow and become isolated.....it would be like we’re playing with 10 men.

The other target man to as you say “get us up the pitch” needs to have a great first touch with intelligence and awareness.
The best player we have to play that role is David McGoldrick......yet again we don’t seem the same when McGoldrick is missing.

Our system seems to rely so much on a floating midfielder/ deep lying number 10 player to link play....
We used to heavily rely on Duffy....we all wondered how we would replace him....then we discovered that McGoldrick can play a similar role.

The next task is to find a bit of intelligence/ composure (a Norwood type) who can play more advanced.
McGoldrick is getting older....so Wilder’s challenge is to find a replacement or find a tweak to the system.

We do seem to put in more crosses than any other team. Logic suggests anyone good at heading would thrive on that style.

It's actually not that easy to think of that sort of player we could sign who would make a difference, apart from Giroud.
