I'll take the comments of a former pro who actually knows what he is looking at. Here's hoping he is right. Still think we need more quality in but I take what he says.

I broadly agree, even in a shitty 1-2 defeat on Tuesday night the change in attitude and level of application was notable.

Now the dust has settled, I can forgive a slip up from a team still trying to find its feet and I see no reason why things won't come together in the coming weeks.

Wilder has been very accurate in identifying what needs to improve (i.e the fact that we're still too tentative in attacking positions and need to sharpen up). Although a couple of signings wouldn't go amiss.

I know what he is getting at and I hope he's right.

I just don't have the confidence these days that the corner will be turned.

Praying he gets the extra players he wants and we do carry on with the intent and good performances lead to better results.

Gage's comments should be remembered as the season begins to unfold. It's very early days, and despite those amongst us who think it's a simple question of achieving fluent, attacking football simply by bringing in better quality players, the signs are already there that we're showing far more purpose in our desire to get at the opposition than in previous seasons. Wilder will know what and where we lack, so give the guy the chance to bring in those players who will show a marked improvement in our performance.

I've followed Kevin Gage on Twitter and Facebook for over a season and if his comments from last season are anything to go by, his column in the star will be worth following too. He's very direct, quite outspoken and understands Sheffield United.

We need people like Gage holding the team and club to account. He talks sense and he's perhaps someone that the board should listen to at times as well.

Spot on

He's been pretty outspoken in criticism in the past. Will be good to hear his thoughts each week.

I take the words of people like him and Edwards. In fact anyone who has played for the club and understands what they see far better than any of us.
I value their opinions as I do everyones but I don't subscribe to the idea that seems to be being portrayed here that their opinions on this season are more valid than anyone else's because they have played for the club.

What is it about the fact they played for the club years ago that makes it as such?

I think because they are ex pros and have played for the club their opinions are more valid than say a one trick pony. Gage does good and bad

What specifically is it though about the fact that they have played for the club that makes their opinions more valid?

I'm seeing a lot of comparisons between the noise that Wilder makes and the noise that Adkins made.

Yes, there are similarities. But the difference is what is said to what we see on the pitch. 90% of what Adkins garbled out during interviews we never saw evidence of on the pitch.

At least, with Wilder, we are seeing some evidence of what he is trying to implement (attacking, pressing high up the pitch) during the precious few games we have had with him as Gaffer so far.

I will write to the star and ask them why you haven't got a column if you wish. Personally I think it speaks for itself that his opinion is of more value than yours and I don't understand this is upsetting you. If it helps i had a conversation with Kevin early last season and he had the same opinion as you quite early.

Fair enough question. I think if you are a player (even former) you know what to look for. You know bullshit and you can use your own experiences to calibrate that against.

As fans we don't really know what goes on behind the scenes although we think we do. We read papers and we see what we see on the pitch. But we don't know really what is going on behind the scenes.

Gage will know staff and players at the club now. He will know how happy they are, what differences there are for good and for bad. We don't no matter how expert we would like to think we are.

I respect your opinion but that all seems fairly flimsy to me. OK I take your point about knowing people at the club and having a better understanding of what goes on behind the scenes than regular fans, but we're talking about an opinion on how things have gone so far and how they are going to go in the future.

If Gage says we've signed 7 excellent players and we'll finish 1st, and someone else says we've signed 7 reasonably good players and we'll finish 5th, I'm not going to side with Gage more than I am the other person because he knows staff at the club.

Well then, what does that tell you?

You...are...Kevin.....McCABE!!!!!!!

It is all flimsy, the whole opinion and speculation lark of football is flimsy. That is why every one of us guesses, speculates on who/what we need and the whole shooting match. You went early on Adkins last season and were proved to be correct in what you said. You could just as easily to the same with Wilder and be utterly wrong.

Right now, I want to know the future price of Oil because it is important to my job. Now, do I speak to you, or do I speak to current and former people within the industry? Their opinion is informed so I would go with them. But they are potentially going to be wrong because predicting something like the price of oil into the future depends on so many revolving variables.
