Hope this may be of interest to some, I expect a few on here can remember this game or were lucky enough to be there.

Recently had some work done on my house and had to pull a few carpets up, it seems the done thing back in the day was to hide the odd newspaper and this one caught my eye - Daily Telegraph, 17th August 1969, just the front and back page sheet including the football reports. Hope the photo is clear enough to read

Note we were referred as 'Sheffield' even back in 1969 which will make it a little less annoying next time I hear it. I guess this must have been our promotion season back to Div 1.

Then a quick glance to the side and it gets better

A classic home performance from them, Eustace sent off (sure he got nicknamed Useless when he was their manager), not one reference to Sheffield in the report. I presume their original moniker was fresh in the memory or maybe its because its such a daft name, but I like the fact that the national press saw us as the Sheffield club.

I was happy with that, but then I saw the league tables. Early in the season which we know doesn't really count but a beautiful sight anyway

Speaks for itself really . Check out their attendance and Coventry's, massive my arse. In fact, they have one of the lowest in the division.

All before my time but I can imagine that would have been a great journey back from Portsmouth. Here's hoping for a few more Sheffield doubles this season!

Our win at Pompey was shown regionally on MOTD that night (MOTD had one match for each regional area in the first few months of 1969-70 season) .

I think puppet was at S6 that day as I remember him recalling that after the match, Wendy fans in the North Stand were throwing seat cushions onto the pitch.

Bert was at Hillsborough that day, Dougan sent off.
In those days it wasn't unusual to go to both grounds just to see football even if you didn't support them. You could also get the United score in the days before local radio etc.

That was a regular occurance.

I do remember this result from 1969 . Actually Huddersfield and Blackpool were eventually promoted. We had a superb home record although the away results were dreadful which is why the pompey result sticks in my mind.
We were promoted the following season.

The four successive defeats in March cost us promotion

Wow, I’m more impressed that you’ve had your carpets down 50 years, in another five days, good effort.

Axminster ? 😉

They made them well back then, its doing a job for now. Believe it or not its a well trodden shag pile! Still got a few others to take up , hopefully I'll find some hidden cash next time. Its older than me by the way , I'm not responsible for that faux pas.

Thank you, that took me back. I was there with my wifey of just a few weeks. She used to attend all the games with me back then home and away, we even came back off our honeymoon early to attend the first game of the 69-70 season. She doesn’t go with me much nowadays, but she’s still a fanatical Blade which I can tell you really helped to calm the stormy waters over our 50 years of wedded bliss. 😗

A few interesting things. We had a spell against Pompey where we kept putting 5 past them. I think we beat them 5-1 away and 5-0 at home that season finishing 6th. The following season we beat them 5-1 away too, in September my first away game - though it was a home game for me as I lived on the Isle of Wight then.

A much more interesting fact is buried away in the league tables.

Look at Div 1, the first result. WBA, referred to as Albion. Brighton were a pissy arsed 3rd division side then.

Remember it well because we had no idea how we were going on, like most people me and my older brother were sat watching David Coleman and the teleprinter clacking away and then on it came printing out Portsmouth 1 Sheffield United 5, we couldn't believe it so what did we do? Got our scarves out on and went to the end of the block to a couple of Wendy mates house to take the piss, they knew as soon as they heard the knock it was us, simple pleasures and all very innocent and good humoured, happy memory, good post.
