A little perspective following Boro

Ok, they might have been relegated from the Premier League, but that was following much criticism of their ultra negative manager that made Warnock's tactics away from home look adventurous.

This Boro side are like the Man U of the championship, big, powerful, strong, fast and energetic. They are head and shoulders above most of the teams in this division.

The pigs talked of the difference in class....and we saw it 'slightly' against Boro, yet should have had a point out of it. Don't be fooled though, 70% of this division are nowhere near as good as Boro, nor possess the same attributes and threats.

I think only Fulham and Wolves will be of a similar standard. I don't rate Villa or Bruce, Derby are always hit and miss, Pigs are, well the Pigs, Hull and Sunderland won't be as good....

We have nothing to worry about, Wilder will make the signings he feels he needs to make us competitive in this division.

They're supposed to cover the PL wages relegated clubs have to pay for a couple of seasons or so, but what they do is enable those clubs to maintain and increase their wage bill and spend whatever they like, which has an unhealthy knock on effect in the Championship. Boro have spent even more than they did when they were in the PL. So have Villa.

It's shite how just one season in the PL can completely secure and transform a club financially for years to come. How rich are Burnley now FFS? Parachute payments have shot up, and clubs like them, Bournemouth, Watford, Stoke, Palace and Swansea now have a rock solid foothold as powerhouses in the second tier at the very least.

The problem with parachute payments is that they were originally designed to help pay for the inflated wages of the players following relegation for a season or two.

But they're not needed anymore. Most clubs that get relegated now get rid of all their overpaid flops for decent money (see Newcastle with Sissoko and many other of their foreign flop jobs). So not only do they gain big money from flops, they are paid on top of that. So now they have potential to throw 100m at a return effort.

Like you alluded too, the Championship will literally be a yo-yo job between a select group of 6/7 clubs. Rest haven't a prayer save for the odd Leicester-esque miracle.

Not Sky, they just won the bidding war, it's the FA that has deliberately created this situation and the Football League were sacrificed at the altar because they'd failed to take the league to where (they felt) it should have been. We are paying the price for having two governing bodies running the same pyramid structure. If the FA (or Football League) controlled all the divisions, there is much more chance that the money would be more evenly distributed.

I do hope you are right. In both games so far we have been run ragged for 20 minutes but been competitive for the other 70.

I'm hoping that we can raise ourselves 10/20% and we've played 2 of the top ten.

But they didn't fluke it, over the season they were better than the rest below them. It can be done, you just need the right formula and money isn't always the determining factor. Just look at the pigs for evidence of that and us if you like when we were relegated from the prem. There will always be someone with a surplus of dosh but also an abundance of talent for fucking things up.

The game has changed forever and there's nothing we can say or do that will change it. Teams like Liverpool can't compete with Barcelona, and Barcelona can't compete with PSG. Tough.
But who are the really good managers? Those who have to live off scraps or the likes of Guardiola, Conte etc. who have unlimited money but still produce average teams?

I'm relaxed about it (at the moment). The Championship is United's natural level (as it is the pigs and Leeds but they've got delusions of grandeur not backed up by their achievements over the last 20-odd years.) There's no doubt, the pigs have now missed the boat and are not in the top eight in this division re. finances, crowds, stadia, resources etc. I really hope they don't sack Carlos The Jackass.
