I have only attended a couple of games this season so I've watched United limited times however when I have we have look lost in the centre of midfield, often succumbing to pressure from the opposition and either giving away the ball or hoofing it up top.

This leads me to ask the following questions:
  • Is the football that's being served up at the moment any better than under Clough?
  • Do we have a realistic shot at promotion this season?
  • Why has there not been any real activity (again) so far this window?
  • Why can't we replicate the 4 game win streak from the start of the season?

No.
No.
Wouldn't have needed to if Adkins had got it right in the summer. Squad too large now.
We're shit.

  • In the league no. In the cups definitely not
  • Doubt it. We looked no better than 2nd bottom Colchester.
  • No money. The Murphy cash was invested in Saudi oil futures and is now worth nothing.
  • We could, but won't.

  • No, because the merry band of cunts from previous managers are lingering around like a stubborn shitstain on a bog bowl.
  • No.
  • There's a squad of 43 players, 30 odd of which are stealing a big wage bill. We can't add until we get rid. And they haven't exactly put themselves in the shop window so far. I believe 19 of them are out of contract in summer. That's when most of the business should be done.
  • Because this squad are an insult to the clubs name, with one or two exceptions.

I'm talking about getting the 5 signings he got wrong, right. Positionally for starters.

so who would you replace Billy with and what position?

Edgar?

Also you say the squad is too big, that's why I thought you were saying he didn't do enough to get rid of players.

That awkward moment when we matched and then surpassed August's form during December

I don't attend regularly either but will attempt a more optimistic reply:

1) Yes, in parts, we're not as dull and can be exciting when we're allowed to attack. Sharp is arguable a better striker than any we had under Clough.
2) Yes, Play Offs for sure. 2nd place isn't quite gone yet.
3) Because we've got to get players out before we can bring new players in, and no one seems to want the players we want to offload
4) We're not going to win every game but we've managed to amass 13 points over the last 6 league games, with only one defeat

I'd have signed 2 central defenders first. Bit unfair to ask who they would have been as that depends on a lot of things. There were plenty at the time being banded about.

The squad has been too big ever since Clough arrived, Clough arrived and made it enormous. Adkins didn't really try and get rid of anyone to free up additional space, it's possible as has been shown with a couple of loanings out, we just didn't do it in the summer. Bad management.

That wasn't what I was getting at though, the point is should we have got those 5 signings right, we might just have had a chance, even with the squad as large as it would have been such is the undoubtedly poor standard of the league. As it's turned out we've got absolutely no chance.

You've absolutely no idea if he tried to move players in the summer.

I bet you're just great at Footballl Manager. But this isn't Football Manager.

Which signings would you have seen as 'right', Barney?

Aside from our spat, you may have a point, but I'd be interested in who you would have seen as available to the club, within budget (say £250k up to £650k give or take) and who would have actually come to work at a serially failing club, with a shit board and a new manager, one of eight or nine in the past seven years.

  • Is the football that's being served up at the moment any better than under Clough? Yes in flashes it has been when we get some decent centre backs in we will be able to attack more, played some great football against P'boro yet lost the game due to shit defending
  • Do we have a realistic shot at promotion this season? Of course we do, it is not over just yet.
  • Why has there not been any real activity (again) so far this window? We have too many average players who need moving on first

Why can't we replicate the 4 game win streak from the start of the season? Simple we are bang average for this division

Maybe Adkins was hampered by the huge injury list at the start of the season and only now are we starting to see players recovering from injury some long term and general levels of fitness improving. Regarding the signings i'm not at all sure signing Sammon was down to Adkins looks to me like it was a done deal before Clough was sacked, you can't argue that Billy was a bad signing only how much does he cost each week. Edgar is an improvement on what we had but I'd agree Woolford and Hammond don't do it for me

S11,

1: Under Clough we were similiar to LVG's Man Utd. We kept good possession, passed well and counter attacked well against sides that came at us, the problem being that in league 1 at BL teams sat back and we struggled to break them down.
It was always 0-0 at half time and usually ended with s 1-0 win or draw.

The problem last season is we looked good in possession but rarely created a chance. We rarely shot and there was little goal action in any match.

Adkins was instantly more positive putting more numbers forward the problem now though is our defence looks vulnerable. The football is generally worse under NA but it definitely more exciting. More shots and chances from us and the opposition.

2: Yes of course we have a realistic chance of the playoffs but unless we go on a fantastic run then automatic looks unlikely. The ray of hope is our manager has massive amounts of experience regards promotion battles and we have loads of players with big match experience that won't be overawed in the playoffs.

3: No action yet players & agents have power. All the best players tend to leave it late to weigh up their options.

4: At least our form has improved greatly since December. If we continue this then we'll finish in the playoffs. Also a crumb of comfort was for 20mins in the 2nd half against Bradford we looked really impressive. If we take that form into the playoffs no team can match us and we'll win the thing.

Having looked through the list of the 43 some of these are permanent fixtures in the U19's and U21's/reserves and I personally don't think they should be classed as first team. I still think the 30 or so first team hopefuls is between 7 & 10 too many but I'd be interested to see our squad size against others in the division less the kids if anyone can be bothered to do the digging.

Being the diplomat that he is, I feel the only mistake NA has made thus far is taking a little too long to figure out which players are taking the piss.

Bad management by Adkins?

One of your early posts on here was criticising the board for not getting rid of players after Clough went but before Adkins was appointed. Something you no longer harp on about as you have a new target.

You have no idea who tried to do anything same as you had no idea about the effect on SCMP paying up contracts would have. Now you know we needed five signings but even with hindsight can't suggest anyone.

  • Why has there not been any real activity (again) so far this window?

This is one of the most annoying myths going this - we have always been active in transfer windows, last January we even gave those swept up by the Sky Sports hype a last minute deadline day signing (Matt Done).

If people said that we dont always sign the right players, then ok, there's a rational debate to be had. But to say we are never active is totally inaccurate.

If we had a squad capable and without so many journeymen this myth would be around. However with the state of the squad we need to see several departures and a few arrivals to realistically be contenders.

We have the 12th youngest squad in the division, right bang on the division average for age (give or take a couple of months) so how about we put the Journeymen myth to bed while we are at it?

For anyone that cares....

Okay - how about we rephrase it and say "shite players at whatever age who cannot cut it"?

Not in the league
'Why can't we replicate the 4 game win streak from the start of the season?'

What do you mean 'not in the league'? Your question was '4 game win streak'.

If you are on about league form then we have surpassed that. These last 6 league games have gained us 13 points more than any other 6 game sequence this season?

Are these genuine questions or is it a veiled attempt to knock Adkins? Just askin' S11

The veil has slipped, you are knocking the club, the players and the manager, which makes your original questions somewhat disingenuous.o_O

Interesting, says we only have 33 players of which 15 are foreign?!?
Apparently they have a market value of £7.93m too, thats given me a good laugh today!!

What does "real activity (again)" mean?
Do you think there has not been any "real activity" in the last two transfer windows?
Why do you and other people keep repeating this bollocks?
You may not approve of all the players signed, but it's demonstrably untrue that there has been no activity, "real" or otherwise.
In fact we have been very active bringing players in, especially last January.
