A few observations from the stats:

- Gus had most key passes (with four, next best one!), joint most shots, most crosses (with eight), joint most successful dribbles, and of course a great goal. Whilst his pass completion was a modest 76%, in the context of the creative role he plays, that score is just fine. His return is hugely welcomed. Personally I still think we look best when he links up with O’Hare, and would like their partnership to be seen on the pitch again soon.

- defensively, like most people on here, I thought Clarke had a poor game. However his second half performance did pick up (possibly aided by an improved player in front of him) and overall he won more aerial duels than anyone else (with seven, although perhaps that says more about our centre backs!), second most clearances (with 8) and did get forward with 3 crosses, 2 shots and a key pass. Anel made most clearances with a massive 16(!) which shows the pressure we under.

- Vini has the highest pass completion rate (93%) as well as eight successful defensive contributions and won three aerial duels. These comfortably are better that Choud with two tackles and no aerial duels. As we saw (and as I thought likely when reviewing the last game) we looked so better balanced when Peck came on, with 90% pass completion, and joint most successful crosses.

- I don’t wish to put the boot in but our new attacker’ stats are poor; Cannon having no shots on target, no dribbles, no crosses, no key passes. Campbell fared little better, although he managed one key pass and one successful dribble. I appreciate strikers need service although we did put 22 crosses into the box (Pompey put in 25 crosses), We need improved understanding and contribution - and quickly.

It’s a Sheffield double weekend, and the Mackems dropped points. Let’s just hope performances can rise to match results, as we rebuild understanding.

Thanks Cool

Coops played a bigger role than hoped yesterday. How are his season numbers looking?

Out of interest, what defines a key pass?
I ask, because it was Cannon who played Brewster in for the cross from which our second goal was scored.

..and I recall him crossing into the box early in the first half.

Surely cannon played one key pass for brewster to set up the goal

Always look forward to reading these stats thanks!

He literally had a delicious cross put on a plate that he didn't attack.

Watched it fly straight past him at head height.
Couldn't understand why he didn't throw himself at it, looked an easy chance on 1st viewing and simple header.

Even if you get a shout (though no one behind him from memory) as a striker or anyone in that position, you wouldn't leave it and take it yourself. Really baffling.

Yes, I saw that and thought it puzzling. It was a cross from the right and not a bad one. Cannon was in the right place, but just didn't go for it. It was almost as if he didn't see it.

Hamer put the ball across, Cannon just had to run in, jump up a foot and head it into the open net. He ran in, just forgot to jump.
He also fell over the ball in the first ten minutes when through on goal and neither chipped the keeper nor played in Rak-Saki late on when he blazed it over the bar instead.
I’d like him to score and get that monkey off his back and settle his nerves, before I judge him. But the signs aren’t great so far 🤔

It was literally hit at 100 miles an hour by Hamer..... Wouldn't call it a cross that Cannon had a chance to react to

Mate cmon that was a stock standard cross as you'll see.. unless you want a slow floaty cross that the player has to create own power on or gives keeper a chance to pluck out of the air.

Not sure why you don't think he had time to react...it wasn't crossed from point blank next to Cannon but from wide outside the box.

I couldn't get why Canon didn't attack the cross either. Maybe it was slightly behind where he wanted it, but I'd expect him to adjust. Don't want to knock him too much until he settled in, but It was a delicious cross.

I ask, because it was Cannon who played Brewster in for the cross from which our second goal was scored.
A “key pass” is defined as “The final pass leading to a shot at goal from a teammate”. This explains why the pass to Brewster wouldn’t fall within that definition.

I always agree that stats have their limitations, and for me the biggest travesty this season relating to this specific stat was Hamer’s contribution to Campbell’s goal against South Barnsley which didn’t amount to a “key pass” despite his movement and pass being the major reason they were opened up.

To balance that, the fact these stats rely on strict objective criteria largely removes subjectivity, and confirmation bias, making them a useful tool to cross check a player’s performance - especially over an extended period.

Thanks Cool

Looking at the Opta stats for goalkeepers who have played 10 games or more this season then:

- looking at save %, Trafford is top at 86.76%, with Coops second at 77.65%. They are followed by Pears (Blackburn) and Johannsen (Stoke) both over 75%. So Trafford’s stats stand out. Beadle is 22nd at 60.68%

- looking at goals scored as against expected goals (the main measure used to determine the performance of a goal keeping, taking into account the number and type of chances he faced) then Johannsen is top saving Stoke 15.8 goals so far this season, with Trafford second on +9, and Cooper fifth on +5.9. Beadle is 17th on -0.7

- for completeness “goals prevented per 90 mins” then takes into account how often played, and similarly Johannsen is top (+0.5) with Coops fourth (+0.2).

So whichever way you slice and dice it, Coops is having a great season.

Thanks Cool. Especially for the Beadle comparison which is stark, reassuring and useful when Wendies are getting above themselves as they usually do.

Here is an interesting stat regards Gus

Gus is regularly our best player, our top scorer and leads our assist stats, however, looking at the Player rating stats on this forum

He's only won 1 MoM all season
He's only 7th in average player ratings - Below Seriki and Tom Davies and just higher than the inconsistent Anel

Seems odd that he's not rated higher by the fans.
