A few observations from the stats (PNE):

- Although some match stats were fairly even, we won the xG battle (1.57 v 2.37) with shot count lost at 12 v 15, shots on target level at 3 v 3, with PNE outperformed their stats by scoring three.

- Defensively unlike recent games we lost the aerial battle (overall 42.9% v 57.1%). Tanganga (own goal aside) was strong in the air winning 7 aerials, but McGuinness and Mee contributed 6 between them (2 + 4). Tanganga also contributing 3 key passes (most in the team) alongside 2 interceptions & 3 clearances

-. Riedewald was solid with most successful tackles (6). Peck didn’t win a single tackle but did make second most crosses, and a shot. Did he perform the role we needed?. In contrast, O'Hare showed his recent better contribution with 2 key passes, 3 successful dribbles and surprisingly second most tackles won (4)

- Brooks put in a shift with his goal and assist and joint second most crosses (3), with Burrows making most crosses (5). However as before our cross accuracy rate is poor (3 from 15) adding to the debate as to whether that’s poor wing play, or forwards not making the runs, and challenging successfully. Ogbene with no crosses attempted, no successful dribbles, and a pass completion rate of 53% is becoming a real problem. Barry with no dribbles and no accurate crosses added little.

- Going forward Campbell managed just 19 touches but did contribute with 2 assists, 92% pass completion and 2 aerials won. Obviously the substitutes made minimal impact . Cannon managed just 1 touch (a shot wide with no passes) in his brief cameo. Ings recorded 7 touches and 1 aerial won but no shots or key passes.

Overall a hugely disappointing outcome. In the past two games our aerial dominance provided a platform that was missing at times today. But we should have killed the game off.

A big game coming up. We need to bounce back at home to regain confidence and momentum

I think there was a lot of added fight in the Preston camp due to past events.
Hecky and McCall clearly wanting to show up well themselves after being the fall guys at Utd.
Ben Whiteman rejected by us as NGE and the awful saga we had with Jebbison. I've never seen him put so much effort in. Clearly fired up to do us. Fans singing what's the score to him also making him give that bit extra.
Ex pig Smith also fired up.
We were unlucky with the Tanganga OG and two easy missed chances from COH and Soumaré.
We were much better than we have been earlier in the season.
We'll get over it.

Basically McGuinness, Peck and Ogbene did nothing/lost their personal battles.
Do you have any stats on the goalie?
Looked like another weak/injured display from Cooper…
Which is 4/11 players massively underperforming and probably why we lost…

Had a look at the xGs, as I was a bit surprised ours was so high:

Preston's notable xGs:
1st goal: Dobbin's shot: 0,07 (A wonderful shot, but he is allowed to get his balance right, look up and place his shot with his best foot) There are players in the way, but none are able to get in the way of Dobbin's picked spot. Cooper's view is probably obstructed. I think the xG doesn't quite match the situation.
2nd goal: Own goal, so gets 0? They manage to block Mee, leaving Burrows to deal with a tall centre half. Obviously Tanganga is unlucky, but it was a move that worked out a bit like they hoped.
3rd goal: Jebbison header: 0,25 A free header from six yards, driven cross? Seems low.

Others:
Smith's late sitter was 0,7. I think Tanganga's other deflection which Cooper saved got 0,07. A few others scored low.

United's notable xGs:

1st goal: Brooks: 0,60. One on one with the goalkeeper.
2nd goal: O'Hare: 0,18. Also seems low. Only got a goalkeeper on his heels to beat.

Others:
Campbell's first half shot 0,23. Bit high? The ball came towards him was a bit awkwardly and don't think he aimed, just smashed it goalwards.
O'Hare stretched attempt. 0,58. From close range, but he could barely make contact with the ball at all.
Soumare after the corner 0,36. Also from close range, but probably more difficult than it looked. The ball bounced higher than he wanted and there was a challenge coming in, so he couldn't wait for the ball to drop more.
Burrows blocked shot 0,15. Looked promising, but two defenders caught up with him and blocked his right foot shot.

The key Cooper stat is 3 shots on target, 3 goals (although the og didn’t count as a shot). His distribution was poor, with only one accurate long ball and a pass accuracy rate below 50% and lower than usual. His positive contribution according to the stats was the lowest of all starters.

But judging keepers is even more tricky from a stats perspective, as so much depends on other factors.

How, in the name of God's Holy Trousers, can that Smith miss be calculated at a lesser chance of scoring than from a penalty?

And by the way, there are constantly crosses flying across our box that don't get a touch at all (same at Blackburn) rendering xG very misleading at the best of times.
