A few observations from the stats:

- highest ranking contributor was Peck, including most shots (4), second most aerial duels won, joint most tackles won, and a key pass. Choud had our highest pass completion rate (90%), but his aerial prowess isn’t what it should be (one duel won) and Vini won more tackles than him despite being on the pitch much less time (and when we had greater possession). Vini needs to be a regular for the run in, alongside Peck.

- our full backs were a mixed bag defensively, but Burrows had most crosses (16 with 4 accurate) with Seriki a distant second with 4 crosses (1 accurate). No other player made an accurate cross! Burrows also made 2 key passes , and overall was one of best attacking threats - as well as made joint most tackles. Peck and Burrows perhaps our top two on a bad afternoon.

- although not his best afternoon, Hamer made most key passes, third most crosses (none accurate!) and one successful dribble. Shockingly we only made three successful dribbles across the whole team. When we are trying to break a team’s low defensive block, pace is less effective and the ability to beat a man becomes much more valuable. It was sadly missing today. Quick accurate passing is the other way, and surely O’Hare, with his great understanding with Hamer, must come in.

- in attack, the stats are pretty poor all round. Campbell with 3 shots, and a key pass was ok-ish. And I suppose Brewster managed two shots. BBD had his poorest stats. As for the subs, Moore won 4 aerial duels and made himself a slight nuisance. In his 21 minutes on the pitch, during which time we dominated possession in the final third, Cannon touched the ball 3 times.

- I thought our centre halves didn’t do too bad under the aerial bombardment, although Robbo lost his man twice, and Anel could have seen red (perhaps harshly). Given Oxfords only tactic was a high physical battle, Holding and Vini could perhaps have been utilized more/earlier, especially as the latter over the season has great aerial stats. It is perhaps noteworthy that Robbo also didn’t make one successful tackle. It also greatly annoyed me when in injury time he gave away a silly unnecessary free kick, and twice jogged back in slow motion with his head down making no effort to rally the team for the last 6 minutes. Not what I expect from our captain.

- a broader team stat, both teams had a similar xG of around 1.1 so a draw would have been a fair result. And shows our overall lack of performance.

So not a great afternoon, and a missed opportunity. But we’re still in the top two and our destiny is in our hands. Blips are inevitable. Let’s get behind the team on Tuesday and bounce back, setting us up for a strong run in.

Are you sure Cannon touched the ball that many times? If so.....money well spent....hmmmmm

Thanks Cool, I was in such despair that I found your post at least a little reassuring that things aren’t all bad!

Can't say I have seen anything from Cannon so far but he can't be blamed for our defeat today .
After winning 6 on the bounce (2/3 of those not really deserved) we got what we deserved today, were we over confident?we never really got going until near the end when Oxford had got the bit between there teeth and survived by hook or by crook and we didn't have enough nous or control to take advantage of the mayhem towards the end.
Some really poor performances by one or two players! Hamer just wasn't at the racers I think he was visiting family in Brazil!
When he's off he really is off ! A player that frustrates me a lot! At least he's stopped getting these silly bookings! Just a frustrating day at the office.
The opportunity to put a wedge between us and Leeds! We threw away!.
The roller coaster is well under way who will win through? That is the question.

That tackle was moronic/idiotic/ridiculous. He was having a shit game and just wanted to kick someone. Even though we desperately needed the ball and to get it up the pitch as quick as possible, he just had to kick someone for his own satisfaction despite knowing full well it's yet another opportunity for Oxford to slow the game down and keep the ball.

This happened a few minutes after he put one of their players in a headlock for absolutely no reason as the ball was 10 yards above their heads.

He simply isn't good enough, and is definitely not captain material.

One quick further observation, I noted that Opta had Anel as our third best contributor yesterday (behind Peck and Burrows) which caused me to look over his stats more broadly. Over the season the one that stood out most wasn’t that he tops our pass completion % (at 90%) as often centre halves play simple balls to keep possession - but that he did so having made “most progressive carries” across our team and that each progressive carry had the longest average, with five chances directly created from them. To put in wider context, the next best two are Hamer and O’Hare,

Anel was probably my biggest disappointment last season, but in the event we do scrape up, I still hope that alongside stronger defenders he could raise his game to a prem level? If we reverted to a back 5 surely the Bash role from 19/20 would be ideal?

I have to ask the question, when you're 1-0 down and have been outplayed and your opponents are starting to stick 11 men in and around their box to defend deep in number, then why take off a defensive midfielder and replace him with a defensive midfielder, particularly when you have a formation which uses two defensive midfielders? Why swap Choudhury for Souza instead of Choudhury for O'Hare? That was poor and negative. It doesn't matter if we concede another goal, we're already losing. Be positive and try to get something out of the game.

This is why I worry about us next season. Wilder has one formation and one set of tactics and that's it. When they get found out, which they will, it will likely be a repeat of last season, no matter who he or the club brings in over the summer. He's done well with results, but the performances and tactical nuance have been average to below average overall this season, apart from Bristol, Oxford (h), Boro and Coventry. Four good performances in 40 matches. That's it.

Also, why did CW not start Kiefer Moore ,surely he knew that the Ariel bombardment would be coming from Oxford ?
Every throw in taken from inside our half was like taking a corner from a different angle !
Moore is invaluable in our box when we come under that sort of pressure.

I agree that Wilder has become more conservative since his early days as our manager - when his first instinct used to go more on the attack when we were struggling - or even when we went down to 10 men, rather than try to hang on. Indeed in one of my all time favourite games, we were 2-1 up away from home, against a buoyant home team, when Wilder took off our most experienced central defender (Jake Wright) to bring on an attacking midfielder (Mark Duffy) - and that finished very well! However recently you can't argue his more negative approach has been effective.

Blackburn

Blackburn
Luton home. Norwich home. Preston away. And thats without thinking about it much.

Four good performances in 40 games. So we’ve won 22 games and not played well?

Wow.

Yes! we needed aerial prowess at both ends of the pitch. The game was mostly played in the air, as the high wind and bumpy mess of a pitch meant controlling it on the ground was impossible. Four or five touches just to get the ball under control. Rak-Sakyi was totally wasted. It was a hoofball up and under slog and nothing else would work.

I went.
Too predictable. Teams get at us via long throws and other aerial bombardments. Whenever they got a throw it was all hands to the decks. I don't know the stats but from where I was Brewster was the spare man at their corners and and won lots of headers. Oh for a Soutar or similar.
We're going to get this for the rest of the season - put three or four bruisers near to Cooper whenever they have a chance. and hope for the second ball. Holding for me is the only answer we've got.
Wilder can say we weren't at it but it's the lack of a big bastard CH that will be our undoing. So we spend 10 million on an apparent CF?

After Souttar, Vini is statistically our next best header, so his return should help too.

This is very much a view post a defeat.

Had he done that, and we lost, we would have been asking why we were worried about Oxford.

Exactly, if CW had started Moore for his defensive attributes against a team threatened with relegation, they'd have been a meltdown on here pre match.
Some of oufans love a bit of hindsight

Sod that kind of detail. We've exceeded expectations. It's results overall that matter to us punters.......
Allegedly🙄
