A few observations from the stats:
- highest ranking contributor was Peck, including most shots (4), second most aerial duels won, joint most tackles won, and a key pass. Choud had our highest pass completion rate (90%), but his aerial prowess isn’t what it should be (one duel won) and Vini won more tackles than him despite being on the pitch much less time (and when we had greater possession). Vini needs to be a regular for the run in, alongside Peck.
- our full backs were a mixed bag defensively, but Burrows had most crosses (16 with 4 accurate) with Seriki a distant second with 4 crosses (1 accurate). No other player made an accurate cross! Burrows also made 2 key passes , and overall was one of best attacking threats - as well as made joint most tackles. Peck and Burrows perhaps our top two on a bad afternoon.
- although not his best afternoon, Hamer made most key passes, third most crosses (none accurate!) and one successful dribble. Shockingly we only made three successful dribbles across the whole team. When we are trying to break a team’s low defensive block, pace is less effective and the ability to beat a man becomes much more valuable. It was sadly missing today. Quick accurate passing is the other way, and surely O’Hare, with his great understanding with Hamer, must come in.
- in attack, the stats are pretty poor all round. Campbell with 3 shots, and a key pass was ok-ish. And I suppose Brewster managed two shots. BBD had his poorest stats. As for the subs, Moore won 4 aerial duels and made himself a slight nuisance. In his 21 minutes on the pitch, during which time we dominated possession in the final third, Cannon touched the ball 3 times.
- I thought our centre halves didn’t do too bad under the aerial bombardment, although Robbo lost his man twice, and Anel could have seen red (perhaps harshly). Given Oxfords only tactic was a high physical battle, Holding and Vini could perhaps have been utilized more/earlier, especially as the latter over the season has great aerial stats. It is perhaps noteworthy that Robbo also didn’t make one successful tackle. It also greatly annoyed me when in injury time he gave away a silly unnecessary free kick, and twice jogged back in slow motion with his head down making no effort to rally the team for the last 6 minutes. Not what I expect from our captain.
- a broader team stat, both teams had a similar xG of around 1.1 so a draw would have been a fair result. And shows our overall lack of performance.
So not a great afternoon, and a missed opportunity. But we’re still in the top two and our destiny is in our hands. Blips are inevitable. Let’s get behind the team on Tuesday and bounce back, setting us up for a strong run in.
