A few observations from the stats: Hamer, O’Hare & Brooks

Having seen various comments on the effectiveness of Hamer this season, here is a season comparison for Hamer vs O’Hare vs Brooks, our creative three behind Bamford (albeit O’Hare playing more centrally needs to be taken into account)

Overall goal contributions

O'Hare has started 31 games, Brooks 21 games, and Hamer 19 games, so:

  • Hamer: 2 goals 10 assists (12 goal contributions @ 0.63 per start)
  • O'Hare: 8 goals 5 assists (13 goal contributions @ 0.42 per start )
  • Brooks: 5 goals 2 assists (7 goal contributions @ 0.33 per start )

Creativity/Passing (per game, successful acts)

  • Hamer 1.7 key passes (pass completion 76.2%), 1.3 crosses and 0.6 dribbles.
  • O'Hare 1.2 key passes (pass completion 78.3%), 0.1 crosses and 0.4 dribbles.
  • Brooks 0.8 key passes (pass completion 74.5%), 0.2 crosses and 1.3 dribbles.

Possession (per game)

  • Hamer dispossessed 0.4 times 0.8 unsuccessful touches.
  • O'Hare dispossessed 0.8 times 2.2 unsuccessful touches.
  • Brooks dispossessed 0.8 times 2.0 unsuccessful touches

I have also seen suggestions that Hamer has suffered a bit of a dip since last season, but his stats still outshine the others, not only in creative terms, but also as regards maintaining possession. And checking his 24/25 stats, he had only 0.46 goal contributions per game last year (with similar 1.8 key passes), so arguably he’s stepped up 40% this season.

And as I really like Brooks, please please practice your crossing! And Seriki’s attacking stats are often better than Brooks, so keeping these two together for next season should be our priority.

A couple of final points (as again I’ve seen them both get stick)

- of all players starting more than 15 games in 25/26 Tanganga has our highest statistical contribution per game.

- although he only started 11 games last season, Arblaster was our top contributor per game in 24/25. He’s clearly not close to being back to that level yet, but let’s be patient.

IF we were to hold on to Gus for next season I'd start him as No.10 either alongside Bamford or just behind.
IF we were to buy say Cleary from Barnsley or someone of the same ilk it would add a better balance in front of Burrows on the left.
When Gus plays on the left it often leaves Burrows trying to cover 2 positions and atvtimes leaves him a bit exposed because Gus is in other places and this is where MF starts to come unstuck to the counter.
I realise atm it's all ifs and buts and whos still here at the start of next season but I dont see the rebuild being that big.

We would have looked a far more balanced team with Hamer in the 10, Brooks on the right and a natural winger on the left.

I’m disappointed we never got to see that last season with with either Rak Sakyi or BBD.

Yep. Only adds to the frustration of last season. Coventry have been so poor since Christmas - I'm not quite sure how they've got the job done but they have!

I can’t believe they’ve brought a new rule in meaning you only have to get more points than the teams 3rd placed and onwards to get automatic promotion. Robbereh I tell thi

"So poor since Christmas" = P21 W11 D5 L5. 35 points from 20 matches which works out at 83.2 points over a full season. They've not been as good (actually, they've not been as ridiculously clinical) but they're still performing as a top 4 team.

For what it's worth, our record since Boxing Day is P21 W9 D4 L8 which would put us on track for 67.9 points over a full season and 8th place.

Update to stats:

Despite repeated criticism, Hamer remains the most creative player in the Championship, with his 11 league assists the most of any player in the Championship, despite starting just 26 games

Hamer:

- 0.62 goal contributions per start (5 goals 11 assists), O’Hare 0.4 (9 goals 7 assists), Brooks 0.29 (6 goals 2 assists)

- dispossessed 0.4 times per game (O’Hare 0.9, Brooks 0.9)

- 0.9 unsuccessful touches per game (O’Hare 2.1, Brooks 1.9)

- 1.8 key passes per game (O’Hare 1.3, Brooks 0.8)

- 1.4 crosses per game (O’Hare 0.1, Brooks 0.2)

So he loses possession at less than half the rate of either O’Hare or Brooks, with roughly a third of the unsuccessful touches, producing the highest creative output in the squad while simultaneously being the most secure in possession of our three most creative players. And he produces more than twice as many key passes per game as Brooks, and seven times as many crosses as O’Hare and Brooks combined.

This is compared to last year when he made 12 goal contributions @ 0.29 per start, less than half he’s made this season; when he was crowned Championship Player of the Season

Noticed this earlier in the week (Thomas at Stoke has equalled his 11 assists today, although from more games). Of all the top assist makers in the Championship only Ipswich's Núñez has created more chances per 90. Difficult season but he's still a star.

Cal O’Hare brings energy but little else. He runs into people and loses the ball, is knocked off the ball easily and produces nothing. A spell of 4 weeks where he was our best player doesn’t alter that
Agree that he’s not been at his best over the last month or so but that’s just not true

I don’t think you can carry him and Hamer defensively. It’s one of the reasons why we concede so many goals. We need to sell one of them and invest in a tall, aggressive and strong CM. Remember also that Wilder bought Rothwell to play in the same CAM position. Personally I would send Cal on his way with Rothwell and keep Gus but I think our Chrisseh wants all 3
