Manchester United 0 v 1 Sheffield United

HT 0-1 Scorer: 'Doc' Pace Att: 30,073

My first ever Blades match!
I was 23 days old!

We finished in 5th place in the 1st division that season. Our highest League placing since 1907 (we also finished in 5th place in 1924 and 1926)

Just a bairn. I was 6 years old and my parents took me across the Pennines for my first taste of the Blades. Knowing how big their crowds usually were, my mum and dad were scared that I'd get separated from them so dressed me in something distinctive that would make me stand out from the crowd. She made me wear a bright red jumper. Away at Man. U. I think she was trying to tell me something...

We might be an old bunch but, my god, we had the pleasure of watching Woodward and Currie.

Only being born in 1977 I missed Woodword, Currie etc but would loved to have experienced a Blades match in the 60/70's, something tells me it'd have been a much different experience to the one we have these days at a match.

I raise your 23 days to my 23 years Silent and note how low the attendance was compared to now. Newton Heath have done very well for themselves

Higher attendances are, a reflection in part of (a) an increase in population (b) greater coverage of football in media, thereby promoting the sport (c) greater affluence. Back in 1964, two years before the World Cup, the first MOTD was on BBC2 watched by an insignificant audience.

Maybe, but I attended an exhibition in the early 90s at Old Trafford. I blagged my way into a private box on the Stretford End and the vast North Stand was being built. An official joined me and saw my awe at the size of the stand. I asked him 'Is the plan to eventually make the other 3 sides as high as that?' He said 'Don't be stupid. The ground would hold around 80-thou. We'd never fill it.' With football stadia in England, it's a case of 'Build it and they will come.' Arsenal went from 38k at Highbury to 60k at the Emirates. Southampton at around 15k at the Dell to 30-odd thou now. Spurs will do the same.

Average attendance for the top tier last season was 36,461 and 26,107 for 1961-62
