Does anyone else think this a quite a significant amount? Even in today's wild transfer market?

Not sure whether to be concerned that we may have spent a lot of budget on someone still proving himself late in his career, or be encouraged that the promise to open the purse strings when we reach the Championship is starting to show early.

I've been told by a source very reliable that the price is 150k plus add ons. He said deal been in pipeline since January.

Makes sense considering that's the amount we paid for likes of Leon Clarke / Lavery etc.

He is now a league two player/ doesn't want to stay/ 1 year left of contract.

Players in that circumstance don't go for 500k.

depends what context you discuss it with - Jordan Rhodes, slightly younger, £12m transfer and 51k per week perhaps?

Significant ... I think it's crazy money for someone who's hardly played in the last 6 years and was a one season wonder.

But at least it's not £10 million for Jordan Rhodes

That's quote of the night!

It's a lot when we could have had the sleazy twat for nothing.

Agree with most of that apart from you skimmed over the one season wonder bit.
Based on that 1 season he's worth at least 3 million, probably more.
Also in that 1 season wonder he was easily the best player in league 1 and he's been easily one of our best players in the last 10 years. If he can regain anything near that form then we've made a shrewd signing.

Also my view of Ched is that he's talented but was a big time Charlie with a poor attitude.
He's probably grown up a lot and leant to be humble and appreciative because of his time in prison.
Wikder has a knack if getting the best out of players, if he can do it with Ched then it's a great buy.

I think you might have over analysed my post a little bit there mate

It'd pay my mortgage off and allow me to live like Olly Reed for the rest of my days. :)

500,000 or 150,000, either way is peanuts really, certainly by Championship standards. I still feel in shock to be honest. It was the transfer that seemed it was never going happen!

I'd spoken to him a few times. My experience was that he was far from a big time Charlie just not a Mensa member.

150k with add ons would be far more like it. If those add ons are based on success, then fair enough if it does take it to 500k.

Anything like 500k up front is way off for a 28 year old who's just had a quiet season and been relegated to L2 with one year left on his contract.

Maybe 500k isn't a lot in today's Championship market, but at this stage it's still quite a lot for us, especially on a player who's far from guaranteed to start.

Newcastle paid 10 million for Dwight Gayle - he's scored 22 goals this season.
Pigs paid 10 million for Jordan Rhodes - a 20 goal a season striker in theory
Burnley paid 8-10 million for the lad from Bristol City the other year.

If Ched gets a full proper preseason, and has a point to prove, he's still only 28 and we all know could score close to 20 goals in a season. It appears the going rate for a 20 goal a season striker in the Championship is 10 million. So we have got a deal for 500K.

My only issue is all the negative press and crap that surrounds the deal. But if we get promoted off of the back of it next year then who cares!

It's not about a point to prove though, it's whether he can do it.

Yawwwnnnn boring a ched thread and all the media attention, took the gloss off good season , great timing as well.

Do "we all know" that? He had one good season at that level nearly 10 years ago when he came onto the scene, and had two seasons with us where he was at best very poor his first year and disappointing in his second. That's his career's Championship experience. We have no idea whether he'll follow in the footsteps of Rhodes from that one League 1 season in terms of stepping up, or Bradley Wright-Phillips who couldn't hack it and was shipped overseas. Two of his last three seasons have seen relegations of teams that were largely relying on him to help prevent.

Who is this Welsh wonder goal scorer you all speak off? Not heard of him
