5 Subs a match ?

Imagine how much time Norwich could waste :D :D :D

Not sure about changing laws during the season...five substitutes could favour the bigger spenders. Same with neutral grounds, are they saying that all matches will be on neutral grounds or just some? Do we play Villa at home or at a different venue? There’s a lot of potentially anomalous situations here.

This would be a nonsense. It’s going to be weird enough with games behind closed doors, there’s absolutely no need to make it even weirder by throwing completely new stuff in with it. We were told that we couldn’t scrap VAR mid-season or substantially alter it because it wouldn’t be fair to have some games played differently at different parts of the same season – this is the same principle.

If managers don’t feel they can play certain players in all the games then they should consider the not-particularly-groundbreaking idea of using the full squad available to them.

It is actually in our favour as we have played 2 more home games .
If all games Are played in a few chosen stadiums no team will have home advantage
that will suit us as our away form is excellent. All 4 of our home games are against teams who would attack us ,we seem to have adapted a style of playing which is suited to away games as our results show.
Really looking forward to the run in with all matches on tele a good 2nd best to being there .

Read they are looking at suspending VAR in CL at least because they don’t want all the officials in a tiny room

yeah a bunch of senile old duffers together would be a recipe for disaster, a medical one not a footballing one we've already had that from them.

While you make some good points there, I think the extra sub is key and will definitely favour richer clubs with greater squad depth than we have.

It's all ridiculous, the Ref is the one in charge and should be the one to make any final decision.
By all means have a TV pitch side so he can check any doubtful or controversial incidents, but the final decision must be his and his alone, otherwise you may as well have the game run by TV cameras and a hooter ….. :tumbleweed:

Take your point on the extra subs. looking at the bigger picture the extra subs will give CWAK the chance to have a look at the 2 new loanees.Dont think they would have much of a lookin the way it was going .
It is fair enough to have extra subs as a lack of proper pre- season will make players more prone to injury .Planning for next season is important and these 2 loanees will cost money so having a good look at them in real action will help to make the right decision to buy or not to buy.

I've given you a like for this - because I strongly support the principle you are talking about - which is NOT to change the rules of the competition, once the competition is under way. I also agree with you that the whole point of having a squad of 25 players is for them to be used.

However, I would like to see 5 substitutes being allowed in play from the start of the new season (whenever that is?).

When I first started watching in the 1970's, teams were only allowed 1 sub. The game has been so much improved by having up to 3 substitutes allowed in play. It gives managers an opportunity to flex the tactics during a game and I think it's also good for the players as well, because it increases the chance that they will get some game time.

There have been a few games, even with the current 3 subs rule, where we've made our 3 subs and then something's happened to change the game and I've thought..."pity we've used up our 3 subs now" because another change might have advantaged us.

So, 5 subs gets my vote - but not now, not until this season is over.

I think we have the right balance with 3 at the minute, and the reform for the cup competitions is enough change on that for me. Exactly the same scenario you throw up could equally happen after using 5 subs if someone suddenly got injured – probably fewer examples granted. I think it would have quite a big impact, and not one I’d welcome. More willingness to lift players in the first half for example, when often players can have bad first halfs and match-winning second halfs. The potential misuse too for the likes of Farke et al breaking the game up towards the end with 5 unused subs makes me feel ill at the very idea of it.

Like others on here, when I started going to games there wasn't any subs at all, and if a player was injured he ether left the field or played on the wing, giving the other team an unfair advantage, so having a sub was a fair move.
But the clubs then said what if the player was a goalkeeper , fair comment, so a goal keeper was added.
Then what if two players were injured and neither was a goalkeeper ? Ok so we had three sub and using all your subs suddenly became a big part of the game.
Now we're talking about five !!!
Tell me what are the odds of four players and a goal keeper being injured in a match ?
This is no longer a matter of fairness any more, this is all about giving the wealthy clubs an even bigger advantage than they have all ready...……...

surely if only 3 can come on ,just have 3 to reduce the numbers ,,,, or is that too obvious

3 on a big bench can sit apart might as well as its not going away soon

Take your point Cerberus !
I can see why two extra subs to finish this season is needed,I agree rules should stay the same for an entire season but this is a one off situation.
Strains and muscle pulls will be common place if players are pushed too quickly into full match's twice a week .Gradual build up is usually the way .
Teams will be at full tilt right from the off and it seems sensible to me under the circumstances to allow five subs to be used.
A lot of players are already worried about playing matches with the virus still in the early stages, risking injury's which would make there availability doubtful going into the new season will just compound there fears..
Players union would probably have an input regarding that.

Of all the issues surrounding re-starting games, this must be the most trivial.

Dont think it will be trivial to the players and clubs . A torn calf or bad hamstring injury could put a player out for a long time.
These kind of injuries are common when players come back from injury or built up there playing minutes too quickly.
You maybe right it is trivial.!!

I meant in terms of ‘integrity of the game’ etc. I’d rather see 5 subs than the season cancelled or places decided on points per game.
