Hull City 2 (Wagstaffe 2) Blades 3 (Addison 2, Colquhoun)
I was at S6 that day watching my first Wendy match. They were playing Ipswich. They were leading 2-0 with goals from Wilf Smith and Jackie Sinclair but goals by Mick Hill (who left the Blades three months earlier) and Mick Mills levelled the scores. I remember being impressed with the electronic scoreboard and it was updating the score and scorers for the match at Boothferry Park

ADDY-ADDY-ADDY-ADDY-ADDISON Guess what we sold him .
There wasnt really an uproar by the Blades fans when he moved to Hereford as player-manager. He got dropped from the team after the opener at Orient (lost 3-1). Papers said he was dropped because of an argument with coach John Short at training. Harris then decided that Dearden and Tudor were ahead of Addo for the striker spot but he returned to the team as a midfielder replacing new signing John Barnwell (who was a disappointment in the first few games) for that brilliant League Cup match against L**ds. He got injured in the 2-1 defeat at Luton and didnt play in the 1st team for the rest of the season. His move to Hereford was hardly noticeable until we saw him on MOTD playing for Hereford in that famous FA Cup replay win against Newcastle in January 1972

To be fair to United, I think Colin asked to go to non league Newport so he could get a route into management as player manager

He used to live near us and my mate delivered The Star to him, occasionally producing match tickets. He was a lovely bloke, certainly had time for people and it’s a shame he left us early.

A classy player who scored some great goals for us.

He scored a 25 yarder at Newcastle to earn Hereford that replay.

The corner taking technique from Woodward for the third is superb. If I tried that it would end up in the BLUT.
If you look closely at our first goal, it seems Hull players were given instructions on marking Colquhoun (he was probably noted by other teams that he had been scoring quite a few at the near post just like Jack Charlton did for L**ds and for England in the 1-0 win against Portugal a few months earlier). They rushed to him as soon Woody's corner was struck but the ball stayed high and went straight to Addison's head at the back post. We must have had a corner earlier and Woody would have noted Hull players putting Colquhoun on a "special watch" so he would have deliberately hit the next corner to the back post

Was Ken Wagstaff related to the Wagstaff brothers that played for us anyone? (we sold them as a pair to Reading for less than 20 grand) - its not a common surname and he played for Mansfield to start with I think which made me wonder.

Ignore that ! The names are spelt the same but they weren't related as far as I know.

Thank you Silent, it's 46 years since Bert last saw those goals.

Hull had some good players in those days, eg Wagstaff, Chris Chilton, Ian Butler, Terry Neil. Or have I made all those up ?

Chris Simpkin, what a dirty git

Terry Neill was still an Arsenal player then. He joined Hull as player manager in summer 1970. Chris Simpkin went to jail some years ago for running an illegal brothel

TC wearing 8. When did he get the 10 shirt - and I wonder if it meant as much at the time as it came to; was it a deliberate choice by/for him.

He wore number 8 shirt for the most of the 1968-69 and 1969-70 seasons. Always number 10 from 1970-71 to 1975-76

I'd be interested to know how this developed.

When I was growing up I presumed it was some sort of co-incidence that the Number 10s were often the creative players. Did it have the prestige then it has now? Did TC want the shirt? Did someone give it him? Not suggesting you can answer these - just thinking out loud.

He was number 10 in nearly every game he played between his debut and his return to the team in January 1969 (he was out injured in Nov and Dec) as Carlin wore the number 8 shirt and when he left there were various players wearing number 8. In TC's return to the team in January, Tudor wore the number 10 shirt and then it went to Salmons for a few games and then to various players. TC usually wore number 10 for most of the games between August and October 1969 and then after that Salmons was the usual wearer of the number 10 shirt until the end of the season

Remember chanting 'Up Swiss' in my best Swiss accent and I really thought the Swiss would win before the kick off.

Old man was given a map by a Kraut with his route to Sheffield marked on it.

Was all very glamorous to a 8 year old.

Sometime in the 1970s I remember my dad telling me that many in Dronfield cheered the Swiss fan riding his bike through Chesterfield Road as he had made all the way from Switzerland (of course he had a breather when his ship crossed the channel) to watch Switzerland v Spain at S6. My dad then decided to take me to the World Cup match. As I was only 4 in 1966 I have no memory of going to the match. Years later looking through the 1966 Morning Telegraph/Star at the library archives I saw a photo of the Swiss fan on his bike!

I thought it was going to say "Blades tell fans they tried to get a few in but it never materialised and now they'll be working hard in the loan market"
