If you're wondering what on earth I'm referring to, which you probably are, because of the ridiculously vague and clickbaity title (sorry, first thread I think, forgive me), I present a stat which seems to me similarly ridiculous (but quite brilliant):

It's been 407 days since Sheffield United last lost a competitive match by more than 1 goal. In that time-frame, in all competitions, we have lost 13 games (not a lot), and all of them by a single goal deficit (excepting one defeat to Hull, which went to penalties).

Obviously most of those games were in the Championship rather than Premier League, and we didn't lose too many games last season full-stop. But given our commitment to playing full-blooded, overload-happy, front-foot football (while being more defensively focused when we have to be, especially since January, more especially this season), and given Wilder's willingness to throw on 3 strikers and give everything to get back into a game when we are losing (including today, against the Champions League holders), I think that's pretty incredible.

Before the start of the season, I think most of us were reasonably confident (or at least hopeful) that we'd either stay up or be very close to staying up, but we probably also expected, given the quality of the Premier League as a whole and the excellence of some of the teams at the top, that there would be a few thumpings along the way. And there still might be, sure, there's a long way to go, and some great teams still to play.

But I think we've already demonstrated that we're unlikely to get thumped anywhere near as often as most football fans (and pundits...) would have predicted of us (or any newly-promoted side, for that matter) at the start of the season. We will lose our fair share, I think that's inevitable for a first season back at this level, but we'll give the vast majority of teams a test, and give a lot of them a scare at the very least, should we continue to adapt like we have done so far and continue to approach games like we did today. I've seen a lot of Liverpool fans saying it was their toughest PL game for a long time, and I think that's a great sign that we won't be losing (m)any matches this season without a fight.

.......until Brexit.

FFS have they moved the date again?

I was wondering exactly this! Amazing record, we are competitive in every game. Keep the margins that low and we can always get something.

What was the last game?

I put something similar in the shout box on Saturday.

I take a lot of heart from the fact that it’s generally a one goal margin loss. No-one is spanking us, even at this level.

Unfortunately though that won’t keep us up, and we need to switch these narrow losses into draws or wins to get some points in the bank.

That's true , but goal difference could easily come into it next May , so it's important not to get thumped like Watford & Newcastle

I make it 419 days since we last lost a league game by more than one goal. (3-0 at Middlesbrough on 07/08/2018)

If we just look at league games, the last time we went such a long time between 2+ goal defeats was 01/10/2011 - 24/11/2012 which is 420 days, so we should beat this on Wednesday! Although we did lose in the FA cup to Birmingham 4-0 in this period and all of these games were in League 1.

These are the only 2 occasions we have gone longer than a calendar year in the last 20 years (I don't have the data handy pre 2000).

For comparison, the average gap between 2+ goal defeats in the last 20 years is 67 days.

It is now 51 league games since we lost by more than one goal.

Yeah, you're right. I was wracking my brains trying to think how I'd got my calculation wrong, and realised I'd for some reason added 52 to 355 (days in a year, as opposed to 365) to get 407 instead of 417, and now feel very ashamed about my mathematical failings.

On a more positive note, we're now at 421 days, so have now beaten that previous record, as you said! Hopefully we can keep it going a while longer...

I might dig the 'complete record' out of the garage tonight and try to see what the previous record run was. My 4 year old has had a recent tendency to be up half the night so I'm hoping that might send her back to sleep if I read it out loud :)

I've looked back through the records and I think that the only time we've gone longer without losing a game in the league by more than 1 goal was 1899-1900 when we went 434 days (21/1/1899 - 31/3/1900). So if we avoid defeat by more than 1 goal at Watford it will be an all-time record.
Amazing how competitive we've been in every game over the last year!
